Fringing, and particularly suede fringing in neutral colours, is a great addition to summer sandals. This pair by Hamburg-based brand Closed features beige and dark brown details and slightly raised soles, and the resulting effect is ideal for both day and night. Closed was founded in 1978 as a family business, at first creating the perfect trousers and then expanding to include more products.

THEATRICAL SHOW
Located in the vibrant Ottensen district, The Box concept store is housed in a listed building that was formerly a theatre. The property was built as part of a factory in 1868 and is now a creative space containing seven shops. Visitors can browse Heritage, a vintage furniture store; move on to The Box Gallery, which exhibits modern art, photography and sculptures; take in The Lazy Dog Gallery, Hamburg’s first contemporary design-art space; stop at Books in the Box, which stocks titles on art, photography and architecture; and then enjoy One Kitchen, a cooking utensil shop and The Box’s in-house café. rdThe Box, Borselstrasse 16F, 22765 Hamburg, +49 (0)40 3990 6214, thebox-hamburg.com

MONTBLANC DELIGHTS
Luxury pen and accessories brand Montblanc has opened a new boutique on Hamburg’s renowned Neuer Wall. Launched in December, the store covers 200 square metres and showcases the company’s range of writing instruments, timepieces, jewellery and leather goods. The brand was founded in Hamburg in 1906 and in tribute to this a special fountain pen and cufflinks have been created and are exclusively available in the new store. The Hamburg special edition of the Meisterstück 149 fountain pen features a gold nib with rhodium-coated inlay which is embossed with the city’s coat of arms. The stainless-steel cufflinks are limited to 250 pairs and are decorated with one of the most striking emblems of Hamburg: the castle insignia on the city’s manhole covers. thMontblanc, Neuer Wall 52, 20354 Hamburg, +49 (0)40 351175, montblanc.com

INDUSTRIAL CHIC
Italian sportswear brand Stone Island has arrived in Hamburg. Its shiny new flagship is a striking space with neutral-coloured walls offsetting fixtures and fittings that have been given an industrial edge. For spring/summer 2016 expect to find the brand’s staple one-pocket T-shirts and cotton vintage-effect jackets which reflect Stone Island’s creativity and research in fibres, textiles and dyes. The brand was established in 1982 in Ravarino in the province of Modena, and this three-storey building is its third flagship to open in Germany. It stocks the main Stone Island line as well as Stone Island Junior for boys from two to 14 years old. rdStone Island, Hohe Bleichen 22, 20354 Hamburg, +49 (0)40 3496 0780, stoneisland.com

TREASURE TROVE
Luxury shopping street Neuer Wall is enjoying ever greater acclaim thanks to the opening of a sleek new flagship store from jewellery brand Thomas Sabo. Encompassing 80 square metres over two floors, the shop references Chinese art in its interior design, with a mix of antiques and specially commissioned modern pieces. Soft carpeting and designer seating add to the luxury feel, while clever lighting allows the jewellery to be seen at its best. In addition to displaying the sterling silver charms and watches for which the company is best known, the Hamburg boutique also offers the brand’s fine jewellery collection ‒ one of only seven Thomas Sabo stores worldwide to do so. Founded by Thomas Sabo in 1984, the brand now has 156 standalone shops around the globe. thThomas Sabo, Neuer Wall 8, 20354 Hamburg, +49 (0)40 3208 8387, thomassabo.com

Hamburg has become a hub of young creatives with a distinctive sense of style. While Berlin is unlikely to lose
its crown as the fashion capital of Germany any time soon, it is increasingly difficult to overlook the nation’s second city as a centre for chic design. A striking aesthetic is emerging in Hamburg thanks in part to its prestigious fashion college, Akademie Mode & Design, or AMD. Unlike young Berlin-based labels influenced by streetwear and club culture, the best emerging designers in Hamburg are going back to basics and embracing the clean cuts, simple silhouettes and exemplary fabrics that put German fashion on the map.
Birgit Brockbals, an alumnus of AMD, launched Spectrum in 2011. Focusing on strong shapes, luxurious fabrics and ethical production, the label reflects the aesthetic emerging in Hamburg. Brockbals’ designs are simple and beautiful, favouring enduring, elegant style rather than passing trends or gimmicky concepts. Her signatures are an expert use of draping and limited but well-considered colour schemes. Ranging from

separates to suits and eveningwear, her pieces complement any wardrobe. The label’s appeal to many Hamburg citizens is demonstrated by the fact that its pieces are stocked at the best concept stores across the city.
Another favourite with locals is Musswessels, the eponymous label of designer Kathrin Musswessels. Like Spectrum, it has a minimal approach to colours, with the occasional pattern appearing in each collection, such as muted stripes for autumn/winter 2015. Kathrin Musswessels excels in soft tailoring and wardrobe staples; she has a knack for injecting luxury into everyday pieces. Hers are garments for wearing from day to evening in any situation. This is clothing to feel great in, and it is classic enough to suit every taste.
The idea of lasting style and functional luxury was once synonymous with German fashion. Brands such as Jil Sander, Hugo Boss and Escada built empires on the back of a simple commitment to longstanding style and excellence in fit and fabric, eschewing the avant garde leanings of many catwalk labels. But in recent years a wave of experimental brands has
emerged from Germany, celebrating alternative cultures and presenting a very different idea of fashion. So what is it about Hamburg that fosters a leaning towards the classic?
For Lotta Meyer, co-founder of Hamburg label Nusum, the aesthetic resonates with the atmosphere of the city. ‘To me, typical Hamburg style is classical understatement. You see this sense of understatement in our architecture, our way of speaking and, of course, in the way people dress. In Berlin you have to be loud to be noticed. In Hamburg, we express ourselves more subtly. Here, you have to pay attention to the details.’ This is played out in the creations of Meyer and her co-designer Tessa Münchow, which, says

Meyer, ‘combine the Hamburg understanding of elegance and class with the city’s high regard for individuality’.
That is certainly an accurate representation of Nusum itself, which delivers classic pieces with a modern edge. The duo’s style is simple, focusing on great cuts and fabrics. But that does not belie a lack of thought. From contrast-lined jackets, designed to be worn with the sleeves rolled up, to expertly draped off-the-shoulder jersey tops, the simplest looking pieces are cleverly devised by Münchow and Meyer.
The label has a line of non-seasonal items that are available throughout the year and that don’t conform to passing fashions. The seasonal collections tend to involve more experimentation. For spring/summer, for example, Nusum has introduced knitted fabrics and lace. Between the two lines, the label offers everything that the modern woman needs, with all the looks adhering to the philosophy of truly wearable elegance.
Irina Rohpeter is another designer
offering a line of classics alongside her seasonal collections. She chooses key pieces that she feels are the most ‘fresh, timeless and sophisticated’ and recreates them each year. They may alter slightly in colour or material, but the original design stays the same and the range is a strong representation of her signature style. Her approach focuses on cuts and fabrics, with muted colour schemes enhancing the use of innovative lines and luxurious materials. ‘My designs challenge traditional perspectives by re-interpreting conventional cuts,’ she explains.
Although Rohpeter moved to Hamburg for ‘a very personal reason – love’, the city is also the perfect home for her label. ‘I really appreciate the seriousness and the honesty of Hamburg and its creative scene. People are open-minded and don’t need to show off.’ She and her fellow Hamburg designers are inspired by the creative scene of the city and by its unique character. ‘Classic, elegant and sophisticated’ is how Rohpeter describes Hamburg, and it’s how you could describe her designs too P

Jil Sander’s creative director Rodolfo Paglialunga is
bringing a fresh approach to the German label’s signature

Few names are as synonymous with minimalist luxury as German designer Jil Sander. Known as the Queen of Less,
Sander founded her eponymous brand in 1968 and opened her first boutique in the upmarket Hamburg district of Pöseldorf. In 1973 she presented her first womenswear collection. Sander’s understated approach to fashion used luxurious fabrics to create austere-looking coats and suiting, and specialised in monochromatic silhouettes and clean, uncomplicated tailoring. The brand developed a cult following among the fashion press and buyers alike. Sander launched her first cosmetics and fragrance lines in the late 1970s and followed this with accessories and a menswear range.
The brand has never veered too far from its minimalist, modern origins yet, behind the scenes, the house has experienced numerous changes, most notably within the role of creative director. Since 2000, Jil Sander has left and returned to the company several times. During Sander’s absences the brand has seen both Raf Simons and Milan Vukmirovic at the helm. When Sander departed from the label in
48 | F E AT U R E S
2013, for what looks to be the last time, Rodolfo Paglialunga was named as her successor. The Italian designer was formerly womenswear design director at Prada and creative director at Vionnet.
Spring/summer 2016 marked Paglialunga’s third womenswear collection and his second showing for menswear at Jil Sander. Having been at the house for several seasons now, Paglialunga has found the perfect balance between his own approach and the minimalist aesthetic of the brand. ‘When I decided to take the position, I thought I had to evolve Jil Sander with my own style, but I realised that there are many points in common between the brand’s identity codes and my own,’ he explains. There are, however, still challenges to working for a house with such a distinctive style, and one that’s been a trailblazer in defining a minimalist way of dressing. ‘This brand is the epitome of a very specific aesthetic based on defined codes and the most durable values, such as purity, clarity, elegance and modernity,’ says
Paglialunga. ‘The real challenge was expressing all these distinctive features while adding my personal touch, combining minimal modern with functional reality.’
But what is minimal modern? Paglialunga views minimalism then and minimalism now very differently. In the 1990s, it was more of a movement, a backlash against the decadent 80s and, as a result, Jil Sander’s pared-down elegance soared in popularity. Now, says Paglialunga, minimalism can be reworked and refined. ‘Minimal in the 90s was considered more as a lifestyle, all defined in black and

white codes. Nowadays, it’s a sort of “new minimalism” ‒ a unique style, with very exclusive fabrics, specific colour combinations and materials that can redefine the Jil Sander tradition and code.’
For womenswear this season, Paglialunga brought a softness and romanticism to a house often associated with strict precision. Working with silk satin, washed jacquard silk, silk duchesse, and plongee leather, he creates jackets featuring slashes or cut-outs that reveal a hint of skin, and dresses that feel more fluid and feminine, realised in delicate, pale tones. ‘I wanted to bring femininity into the house. My designs are more fluid but still structured. The formal purism of the brand is seen now from another perspective – a little bit more romantic and dreamy with a suffused sensuality,’ says the designer.
In contrast, Paglialunga describes his spring/summer 2016 menswear collection as ‘urban functionalism’, and its utilitarian-inspired designs feature nametags, adjustable
straps and zips across tailored jackets, trousers, shirts and shorts. A strict, uniform-like feeling is also conveyed throughout with the use of canvas, cotton poplin and nylon fabrics, and sombre shades such as grey, black and military green.
Staying true to the heritage of the house, Paglialunga has reworked the pure, precise nature of Jil Sander. ‘I definitely wanted to give a new spin, while always respecting the heritage and the core values of the brand,’ he says. ‘In both collections, there was a change in shapes, as I focused more on the silhouette and defined new details. It is a cooler attitude, still formal but less classical.’
In what would be a daunting situation for some, the designer has shown a bold yet steady approach, allowing his own aesthetic to blend with the design heritage of the house. Retaining all that made Jil Sander so successful in the first place, Paglialunga has introduced fresh ideas that are taking the house forward and are as sure to win new audiences as they are to please loyal fans

Located in the heart of Hamburg, Eimsbüttel is one of the most densely populated areas of the city. With good reason, too. It offers plenty of green
spaces, great cafés and restaurants, and an array of independent shops that present striking alternatives to high-street fashion. It’s little wonder that this neighbourhood is a haven for creative types.
One of its most impressive independent stores is Mili, owned by Sara Bjarnadóttir and her mother Frida. Stocking Scandinavian designers such as Maria Black Jewellery, Wood Wood and Ganni, the boutique offers a carefully curated collection of wardrobe classics. Think silk blouses cut just so, mannish oversized jackets and tissue-thin T-shirts. That the proprietors hail from Iceland is no surprise. The minimalist influence of Nordic culture can be seen in every detail, from the white walls to the plain tables displaying merchandise.
If you’re visiting in the summer, take the U-Bahn to Hoheluftbrücke and walk along the Isebek canal to Mili on Klosterallee. It’s a short stroll and you can explore picturesque Mansteinpark on the way back.
On the subject of outdoor spaces, the Aussenalster, or Outer Alster lake, is a wonderful spot for a picnic or a boat trip. Every May, the Japanese community of Hamburg gathers here for a fantastic display of fireworks in celebration of the cherry blossom festival. It’s a spectacular sight that can be appreciated by everyone, as almost all banks of the Aussenalster are open to the public. With its panoramic views of the Alster river, the large Alsterpark on the north west shore is also a popular spot for joggers and cyclists.
Having worked up an appetite, why not head to one of the many superb restaurants and cafés in the neighbourhood? Hamburg’s proximity to the sea means that the local

cuisine is largely fish-based, with crab, herring and eel among the favourites. Visitors looking for some of the finest fresh fish should head to Jellyfish restaurant. Opened in September 2010, it is situated on the edge of the Schanzenviertel beside the Reeperbahn, one of Hamburg’s most popular nightlife zones. The menu here is a tightly edited selection of fish and seafood, with vegetarian and meat dishes available on request.
Jellyfish co-founder Hauke Neubecker, who has lived in the area for the last 25 years, longed for a top seafood restaurant in the neighbourhood for some time. Since no such establishment opened, he decided to launch a restaurant himself. He and his business partner Jens Paulsen have created a place with all the quality of a fine-dining establishment but none of the intimidating formality. ‘The last seven years have seen a lot of upmarket restaurants opening in the vicinity,’ says Paulsen. There are still, he adds, plenty of simple eateries and pubs, ‘but in between are some restaurants such as Jellyfish’.
Witwenball wine bar and restaurant, which opened two years ago, is another epicurean outlet. Serving a wide range of fine wines and seasonal food made with local produce, it has fast become a favourite with foodies. Co-owner Julia Bode explains that the team chose to open a restaurant in Eimsbüttel, and

especially the Weidenallee, ‘because it is in a very central area with a good mix of residential and office buildings’. However, it wasn’t just convenience that persuaded her that this was the place to be. The vibe of Eimsbüttel was a big draw. Eimsbüttel is lively, she explains, ‘and the people here are open-minded and creative, which fits our concept. We love the neighbourhood and we’re blessed with good restaurants such as Juwelier and Jellyfish, and with shops such as Purple Pink, Weide, My Supper, Postel, Morgenthau and Beyond Beer.’
Bode is far from being partisan when she talks of the amazing stores in the area. Purple Pink, for example, is an ode to all things stylish and covetable. Every season, owner Dachar Sontoung sources wares from Copenhagen and styles them into inspiring window displays. Over at Lys Vintage on Eppendorfer Weg, homeware aficionados can browse the latest collections from House Doctor, Skandinavisk and Foxy Potato. The vibe is Pinterest-worthy, with plenty of copper, marble and concrete accents. If Scandi-chic isn’t your style, however,
be sure to check out Oak on Osterstrasse for cool streetwear labels. Founded in 2009, it stocks an eclectic range of brands such as Onitsuka Tiger, New Balance and Carhartt.

Hamburg exudes cultural richness and epicurean appeal. This major port city is renowned for its harbour life and has a long-standing reputation as a trading centre for produce from around the world. For centuries wealthy Hamburg merchants imported exotic and expensive ingredients and today such produce is widely available at the city’s many restaurants.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Hamburg is famous for its seafood, yet there are many other types of cuisine to sample as well, from modern Asian tapas to traditional German dishes that include soups, stews and bakes. The diverse restaurant scene offers a wide choice of chic dining experiences: Hamburg’s stylish restaurant options range from cool and trendy bistros in the warehouse district to places with scenic views of the waterfront.

36: Pure And Simple

44: Forging Ahead

Vionnet.
Jil Sander».

Beyond Beer».

Prada
Jil Sander.
