Our Season of Freedom
Dear Congregants,
Passover arrives at the end of this month! One of the most important principles of the Passover Seder is
the obligation that each of us regard ourselves as though we personally went forth from Egypt. The Seder
is meant to remind us that Passover is not just a story about the ancient Israelites or about our ancestors,
it is also about us in 2021.
Passover is known as Z’man Cheruteinu ( ּ(זמְָן חֵרוּתֵנו , “Our Season of Freedom.” We celebrate our
freedom symbolically throughout the Seder by mimicking the practices of ancient royalty and nobility.
This is why the rabbis of the Haggadah instructed that we recline on pillows on our left side. This is to
embody the practice of royalty and nobility lounging during a banquet, just as the Greeks would during
their symposiums. These “extra touches” in our Haggadah enable us to fulfill the commandment by
embodying the experience of true freedom as the rabbis understood it.
We are encouraged to do everything we can to experience our freedom, including adding meaningful
touches to our Seder. There is a great plethora of resources online, I recommend The Open Siddur Project
and Ritualwell, where you can browse creative readings, songs, and rituals to add to your Seder this year.
This can be a fun way to engage the whole family!
This year, to help myself embody the obligation of experiencing liberation, I will be adding the following
poem to our family Seder:
Mi Chamocha- Awe and Wonder In The Sea by Annie Matan
Almighty Gd,
I have known fear and I have known comfort
And here, in this moment
My eyes are wide open
My heart is wide open
With each step, my heart pounds
And I can feel my lips stretching into a smile
The sounds of the sea are all around
And the sounds of children
Laughing
Playing
Running
You are here
And everywhere
Between me and this miracle
In my heart
In the winged ones above us
And in the spray of the sea that cools my face
This journey has been so long
I have been so tired
And I have been so afraid
But here, in this moment
Between the certainty of death and loss
And the wonder of an open way ahead that seems to go on forever
Between the sea and the sea
Here I am
And here You are
You are a gift
I can see with my feet on this muddy earth
With the tips of my fingers
Tracing wet lines through the walls of water that hold me in
Hold me up
Hold me close to You
You are here
Inside me
Pulling me to safety
To Your side
One mud-soaked step at a time.
Hag Pesach Sameach. May this Passover, our Season of Freedom, be sweet, joyous, and full of
inspiration.
e wish a hearty “B’sha’ah Tovah” to Rabbi Jankovitz as she
approaches her due date and maternity leave!
With Baby Girl Jankovitz-Pastor planning on making her
appearance on or around March 15, Rabbi will be on maternity
leave for 8 weeks following the birth. She will spend her first
Mother’s Day at home as a new mother, and then will return to her
role as a working mom!
We all wish you and Steven an easy delivery, a happy healthy baby
(who sleeps through the night at an early age), and a lifetime of
love!
With much love and good wishes from
Your CBENT family

Co-President
Dear Fellow Congregants,
Jews all over the world mark the passing of time by the celebration of holidays. The
traditional Luah Hashanah calendar that is used, catalogues a vast amount of
information. It is revised every year to take into account the 19 year lunar cycle of leap
years, the 28 year solar cycle, the 7 year Sabbatical cycle, and of course the 3 year Torah
-reading cycle. It is obviously more than a record of time. From Shabbos candle
lighting times, to the daily prayers that should or should not be said; the specific passages of the Torah
readings; when to wear Tefillin, when to take them off, to fast or to feast. It is a guide for both the synagogue
and the home. In its different iterations it has been a handbook for maintaining observance for centuries.
The past twelve months have defied the precision and guidance of any calendar. We are now coming upon
the anniversary of an event that only scientists and fiction writers could have conceived of, a worldwide
pandemic. Its impact on lives, livelihoods, and our outlook on the way we interact with each other has tested
our mettle. It will be fodder for authors for decades.
CBENT has more than survived. We have surmounted the many obstacles placed in front of us and learned
to adapt. We are preparing to observe our second socially distanced Passover, and are looking forward to
being able to celebrate a communal second Seder, complete with all the traditional trimmings. Our Purim
seudah and Megillah reading was a big hit, with the first time participation of a great number of our
students. The service was creative, interactive and enjoyed by all. We are even growing. Rabbi Jankovitz is
personally contributing to our membership, and we looking forward to greeting her and her husband and
our “new member” in the synagogue in the not too distant future. In just a few weeks we will begin to start
celebrating carefully choreographed B’nai Mitzvah in our main sanctuary. As vaccinations become more
common and the horrible rate of infections decline we look to the future and returning to normal activities,
events and celebration of ‘simchas’ and traditional holidays. We are starting to discuss the High Holidays.
Traditionally Jews say on Passover, “next year in Jerusalem”. Let us all say at our Seder, “New Years IN CBENT.
I truly believe we have weathered the storm, and as a community we have stuck together and retained our
identity and our loyalty to each other even though somewhat distantly. Please continue to read your emails
and participate in our creative activities and opportunities online.
On behalf of my co-President, Amy Blake, and the other officers and Board members, and of course my wife
Bonnie, let me be one of the first to wish (well in advance) a Zissen Pesach!

GET READY!! After missing Sisterhood Shabbat last year due to Covid, we are all ready with
some Zoom surprises for you to enjoy. Our focus is dedicated to the Resilience of Women and
what we have done to exist and carry on during these trying times. We will be honoring Sharon
and Jerry Teres for over 40 years of devotion to CBENT. As you know, Jerry died during the
summer when we didn’t have Zoom Shiva, so many of us were not able to properly extend our
condolences and love to Sharon and her children. Sharon is moving to Florida and now is our
opportunity to recognize all the devotion to CBENT by both of them. Get in touch with Penny
Meyers for a part in this special evening. [email protected].
On February 3, our ladies met with the women from Temple Sholom in Broomall for an
interesting “speed meeting”. We have planned to enjoy many other shared programs with them
in the months to come.
March 21, 2021 at 5:00 PM, Anita Y. Friday will present a program on Racial Healing. Flyer attached. Mark you calendars for April 29, when I will be presenting a program on the Holocaust to both groups of women.
Many Thanks to our own Scott Noye for his knowledge and insights in helping us prepare recipes for Passover. We are looking forward to more “Cooking with Scott” events in the future. It will be even more fun when we can all work together in the CBENT kitchen.
Yours in Sisterhood, Marilyn

We made it through the dark winter period, welcome to Spring. Thank you to everyone that supported our Super Bowl grid. It was once again a success and we appreciate everyone's enthusiasm. Congratulations to the winners listed below!
Congratulations to the winners listed below!

Q2 Hank Belman $50
Q3 Ken Weiss $50
Final Ken Weiss $100
There are two things happening in April, first our men's club softball team will play this season after a one-year layoff due to COVID-19. We are welcoming two new players Jonathan Schwartz and Rich Kaplan. We will post the schedule and locations when it is available. Also, look for a big event coming in Late April. We are finalizing plans for a Sunday evening of entertainment. This will be done virtually, and an email will be coming soon. We encourage everyone to support this event.
As the weather begins to improve, we will have a Men’s club mitzvah project. We are planning on two projects one painting part of the outside of our building and the other to improve our landscaping. We are hoping to have the building looking nice so that we can hopefully all convene again for the High Holidays this fall. More to come on that as well.
Due to COVID-19 and maintaining everyone's health and safety is a priority we will not be having our Closing event this year. However, we are planning a large welcome back party for September 18th if it is safe for us to convene. Please hold the date, there will be more information coming over the next few months.

Purim, Purim, Purim lano, Purim, Purim, Purim is over,
Pesah, Pesah ala mano; Passover is at hand;
Las matsas si stan faziendo, Matzot are being made,
Los japrakis si stan koziendo. The stuffed grape leaves are being baked.
I am starting with the lines in Ladino by the great Sephardic singer/songwriter Flory Jagoda (1923-
2021) not just to honor her memory (she passed away on January 29), but because her song
beautifully reflects the hectic season we find ourselves in. We just had a whirlwind of Purim-related
events! Our students made masks, sang song, played games, performed the Shpiel and read the
Megillah. And now, with sounds of groggers and Megillah chant still ringing in our ears, we are
already fully immersed in Pesach preparations. Indeed, it is a very busy season at Or Tamid!
Our younger students are getting ready to assume their role as sh’lichei tzibbur (emissaries of the
congregation). Kitah Gimel-Dalet with Morah Penny will help Rabbi Jankovitz to lead a CBENT
Family Shabbat Service on Friday, March 5th, at 6 pm, and Kitah Aleph-Bet with Morah Gigi will
attend an Or Shalom Tot Shabbat on Friday, March 26th, at 5:30 am. Please, log into services and
support our little daveners!
Our traditional Or Tamid Model Seder will take place on Sunday, March 21st. I am yet to experience a
“normal” model seder at Or Tamid, as last year we had a quarantine virtual seder. Alas, this year as
well we won’t be able to gather around the big Pesach table, however, b’ezrat Hashem, if weather
permits, we hope to have a drive-in seder at the CBENT parking lot, and allow our students a chance
to see each other and have some safe socially-distanced fun in the fresh air. After all, Pesach is also
known as “Chag Haaviv” and “Chag Hacheirut” (the holiday of the spring and the holiday of
freedom), and we are eager to get the feeling of both.
According to Ex.12:2, the month of Pesach considered to be the new beginning, the first month of the
year. As days grow warmer and brighter, we hope our lives will be happier and more fulfilling too.
This year I will be singing “L'Shana Haba'ah B'Yerushalayim” (next year) in Jerusalem at the end of
the Seder with a special feeling. May the time come soon when we are able to travel anywhere, get
together whenever we want, shake hands and give hugs freely!
Chag Kasher V’Sameach! Have a Happy Pesach!

As our Talmud wisely teaches: “Just as my ancestors planted for me, I too shall plant for my
descendants.” Ta’anit 23a
The formation of CBENT’s L’dor V’dor Legacy Society was announced in the December 2020
issue of the Shofar. Now, we are actively asking our fellow congregants to join the Legacy Society.
This is a way for you to show your support for CBENT that doesn’t have any current cost to you! All
that is required to become a member of the Legacy Society is for you to tell us that you have made a
planned gift to CBENT.
Making a planned gift means taking formal action to provide for CBENT in the future, such as
providing for CBENT in your will, trust or beneficiary designation of a retirement account or life
insurance policy. A Legacy Society member must do more than merely intend to name CBENT later.
However, anyone who wishes to become a Legacy Society member will be accepted based upon her
or his indication that an actual planned gift has been made to CBENT. No documents or proof will
have to be provided.
A planned gift means that no current payment is required. Thus, there’s no current financial
pain whatsoever. A planned gift may be in any dollar amount – no gift is too small.
We already have a few founding members of the Legacy Society. You, too, can have your
name recorded permanently as a founding member if you join by June 30, 2021. We invite you to
contact any of us, or CBENT’s office, to express your interest in joining the Legacy Society, and we’ll
be reaching out to many of you personally in the coming weeks. We hope you will join the Legacy
Society to bolster the future financial stability of CBENT.
Sincerely,
The L’dor V’dor Legacy Society Committee
Richard Chaitt Marc Jaffe Arthur Pollin Matt Rosin

Herbed Matzah
3 T Olive Oil or Vegetable Oil ¼ t each Miscellaneous Herbs and Spices * see note below* 2 sheets Matzah, (store bought, boxed) Mix oil and herbs and spices together in a bowl. Let them marinate at room temperature for at least 1 hour. Place the matzah on a baking sheet. Very liberally, brush oil and herb mixture on matzah. Bake matzah in a 350-degree oven for 10-15 min or until lightly golden brown and warmed. Let matzah cool 5 min. Break each matzah sheet along the dotted lines into 4-5 strips. DO NOT worry if matzah breaks into smaller pieces! It will still be super tasty!!
* I usually add ¼ teaspoon each to start…Kosher Salt, Pepper, Onion Powder, Chopped Garlic, Oregano, Basil, Thyme, Sage, Rosemary, Celery Seed, Za’atar Seasoning, Dill…or whatever I have in my cabinet. There are numerous flavored herbed salts and premixed seasoning blends that you can use. There really are no limits. If I have fresh herbs, I use them. If not, I use dried. Feel free to adjust the measurements based on your taste preference. It is always better to add a small amount first and then, if needed, add more flavoring to increase the flavor.
Passover Mediterraneran Mandelbrot
3 Eggs 2/3 c Peanut/Cottonseed/Vegetable Oil 2t Italian Dressing or marinade, store bought or homemade ************************************* 1 c Sugar 1 1/3 c Cake Meal 1 t Kosher Salt 1 t Baking Powder 1 T Potato Starch 4 T Feta cheese crumbles 2 t Oregano 2 T Fresh Rosemary, chopped 1 can (6oz) Black Olives, medium or large, sliced in half (30-40 or so) ¼ c Italian Dressing or marinade Combine sugar, cake meal, salt, baking powder, potato starch, oregano, and rose-mary in a bowl. Mix wet ingredients together in another bowl. Add dry ingredients to wet, half at a time. Mix until almost incorporated. Add in olives and feta. Mix until incorporated. Let dough sit, covered, at room temperature for 30 min. Preheat oven 15 minutes before baking. Grease cookie sheet. With wet hands, divide dough into 3 pieces. Shape each into a log/loaf. Smooth tops. With a pastry brush, baste with remaining Italian dressing. Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for approx. 25-30 min. Cool for 15 min then slice log into slices. I slice the loaf into ½-3/4” slices. Lay slices on their side and bake for 10-15 min more or until golden brown. The longer you bake the mandelbrot, the crisper and drier it will become. Yield 3 ½ dozen.
Passover Almond Choc Chip Mandelbrot
3 Eggs 2/3 c Peanut/Cottonseed/Vegetable Oil 2 t Almond Extract ************************************* 1 c Sugar 1 1/3 c Cake Meal Pinch Kosher Salt 1t Baking Powder 1T Potato Starch 1 c Choc Chips 1 c Chopped Almonds
Cinnamon and Sugar
Combine sugar, cake meal, salt, baking powder, and potato starch in a bowl. Mix
wet ingredients together in another bowl. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, half at a time. Mix until almost incorporated. Add in choc chips and almonds. Mix until in-corporated. It is easier if you use your hands. The dough is a bit sticky.
Let batter sit 30 min. Preheat oven 15 minutes before baking. Grease cookie sheet. With wet hands, divide dough into 3 pieces. Shape each
piece of dough into a log/loaf. Smooth top and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Pat cinnamon and sugar mixture lightly into top of loaves.
Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for approx. 25-30 min. Cool for 15 min then
slice log into portions. I slice mine into ½-3/4” slices. Lay slices on their side and sprinkle lightly with cinnamon and sugar. Bake for 10-15 min more or until golden brown.
The longer you bake the mandelbrot, the crisper and drier it will become. Yield 3 ½ dozen.

Zoom Etiquette
Since it seems that using zoom for services and meetings will be a way of life for a while, please read over these simple rules of etiquette and make sure to follow them to make it a pleasant experience for all.
Mute your microphone • To help keep background noise to a minimum, make sure you mute your microphone
when you are not speaking or participating in the service.
• Be mindful of background noise – dogs barking, birds chirping, family members talking, phones ringing, they’re all distractions! Please keep yourself on mute unless you are asked to speak.
How to mute and unmute yourself
You can mute and unmute yourself by clicking on the microphone icon.
Or use the following shortcuts:
For Windows: Alt + A : Mute or Unmute
For Mac: Shift + Command + A: Mute or Unmute
For telephone: *6 : Mute or Unmute
If your computer doesn't have a microphone or we can't hear you, you can join the Zoom meeting and watch the video portion on Zoom, and use your telephone to get the audio and speak to others. Please note that there are different numbers to use when calling in to a zoom service/meeting.
IMPORTANT: If you are listening on your phone, you need to mute yourself on your phone in order to avoid feedback (an echo of everyone's voice.)
If you hear an echo in the meeting --If it's your own voice echoing:
Are you using the phone AND your computer? If so, mute yourself on one of the devices. Are you in the same room as another participant? If so, one of you should
mute yourself.
Position your camera properly No one wants to see your chin, up your nostrils, your right (or left!) thumb or
your ceiling! What you see is what we see!
• Be sure your camera is in a stable position and focused at eye level, if possible. Doing so helps create a more direct sense of engagement with other partici-pants. Avoid multi-tasking
Don’t forget -- your camera is on! It can be easy to forget you’re on camera if you’re not heavily participating, and
that can be dangerous. Don’t let us see you fall asleep, scratch, walk away, or eat. The same holds true for your family members – even if they are not partici-pating in the meeting/service, we can see and hear them if they are in the cam-era’s view and you are not muted! Stop your video if you need to do any of the above. Stop video by clicking on the video camera, or on the 3 dots next to your picture. It can be easy to forget that people can hear or see you if you’re in a large group, so don’t risk it!
Navigating the Zoom Menu Before you join us, it would be helpful to become familiar with the Zoom Menu. Here are the main icons displayed during a Zoom Meeting:
• Microphone: mute/unmute your microphone
• Video: start/stop your device webcam which allows other participants to see you or not
• Chat (chat bubble): join the chat discussion, pose questions, or send messages to participants. Make sure you click on the name of the person (or “everyone”) you want to chat with.
• Participants: view who else is in attendance and raise your hand
• Share Screen: present content from your screen then stop sharing when finished
• Leave Meeting: click on that at the end or when leaving the meeting/service.
