Our experiencein manufacturing them goes back more than twenty years.The high technical quality has been achieved by contin-uous development work supported by our clients.With this catalog we are proud to present our mostcomprehensive range of shipboard cables.

We have chosen to produce only halogen-free cables.They remarkably improve the fire safety of the ships bynot emitting toxic burning fumes or thick smoke.In addition no corrosive gases damaging the ship and itsequipment are emitted in case of a fire. Using the latesttechnology we also have been able to reduce cable weightand size to a minimum and still maintain quality, enablingeasy installation. The halogen free range of cables includesboth flame-retardant (IEC 60332-3) and fire-resistant(IEC 60331-21) cables. Helkama shipboard cables areapproved by all major classification societies.

As a specialized, independent and optimum-sizedcompany, focusing on service, we have been able togrow steadily by quickly responding to our customers’needs. Our short delivery times, backed up by anextensive stock of cables, enable us to deliver punc-tually and keep our clients satisfied. This remainsour goal for the future, too.

Test onbunchedcablesIEC 60332-3Burning isallowed upto max. 2.5meters fromthe burnerwithinspecified time.

IEC 60332-1 is the test for single insu-lated wire and cable. Test procedure andrequirements according to the picture,below.

Insulation materials:The following designations are used forinsulation materials in this catalog. Allmaterials are halogen-free.

XLPE stands for cross-linked poly-ethylene compound. It has excellentmechanical and electrical characteristics.HF90 stands for cross-linked poly-olefine and combines very similargood characteristics with excellentflame-retardancy. PE/foamPE standsfor a foamed polyethylene coated witha solid skin of polyethylene compound.This construction provides outstandingelectrical features for data transmission.

Sheathing materials:The designation SHF1 stands forthermoplastic compound. This materialis halogen-free, highly flame-retardantand has low smoke emission.

Definition of terms:

Flame-retardantTo be flame-retardant, the cablesmust withstand the test specified inIEC standard 60332-3 or IEC 60332-1.Flame-retardant cables do not propagatefire, and are self-extinguishing.

IEC 60332-3 is the test for bunchedwires and cables and has three cate-gories A, B and C, defined by differentlimits for flammable material andburning times. Burning time describeshow long the burner is directed towardsthe bunch of cables. The requirementfor passing the test is that after theburner has been removed the cablesmust extinguish themselves. Burningmay not occur more than 2.5 m fromthe burner as shown in the figure.

Halogen-freeHalogen-free refers to the absenceof halogens, such as chlorine andfluorine, and is determined onthe basis of halogen content andthe acidity of gases of a cable.

IEC 60754-1 determines thehalogen content of the material.To meet the requirements ashalogen-free the halogen contentof the material may not exceed0,5 % or 5 mg/g.

IEC 60754-2 determines thedegree of acidity of gases evolvedduring combustion. The limitvalues are 4,3 for pH and10 mikroS for conductivity.

Smoke emissionSmoke emission refers to visibilityin a fire. The greater the light trans-mittance, the better the visibility.When tested in accordance withIEC 61034-1 (test method) andIEC 61034-2 (test requirements)the smoke emission of a cable duringfire must not exceed the followingvalues.

Fire-resistantTo be classified as fire-resistant the cables must withstand the test specified instandard IEC 60331-21. The cables must operate for a minimum of 90 minuteswhile the burner is directed towards the cable as shown below. Helkama fire-resistant cables are also flame-retardant.
