Sherwood Mills Grade 5 Basketball Club

SHERWOOD MILLS PUBL IC SCHOOL

Bits and "Bites" from the Shark Tank and Ocean Floor

During the last week of October, students began their journey across Canada. That's right, the Walking Club has started up again for another year. During the Energy Break, children will have an opportunity to walk around our school. Each session, we will have walked for a kilometre; about 15 minutes of walking. Classrooms will keep a tally of who walked each week. Once a student has walked 5 kilometres, he/she will be eligible for a backpack chain. We will keep a

tally of the entire school's walking efforts and track our journey across Canada. We will post how we are doing on the Physical Education bulletin board.

Thank you to Mr. Hawkins for holding badminton and basketball workouts for grade 5 classes. They are both excellent activities to participate in. They really get your heart working!

Congratulations to our school soccer team who travelled to Dixie Public School to compete in the 7th annual Dixie Dragons Soccer Tournament. The players posted a 4 wins 1 loss record and finished in first place in their division. Way to go Soccer Sharks! We are so proud of you. A special thank-you to Ms. Lemmond for all of her hard work to prepare the players for the tournament.

The grade 4 Indoor Soccer Intramural is now in full swing. There are 10 Shark teams competing for the Championship banner. Each team is guaranteed to play 5 games. Games are played during En-ergy Breaks and all players are expected to wear running shoes. The games are officiated by our grade 5 gym helpers.

November will see several classes partici-pate in a Guinness Book of World Re-cords Cup Stacking Event.

Mr. Shepherd

Health and Physical Education Instructor

The Grade 5 Basketball Club will continue in November. This club is supervised by Mr. Haw-

kins. Each week, at least one Grade 5 class is invited to the Shark Tank gymnasium during an

energy break to play basketball. This is an inclusive club. No experience is required. Some students choose

to play a "pick-up" game of basketball, while others prefer to work on their dribbling, shooting, and passing

skills. This club provides an opportunity for students to build positive relationships with their classmates, and

it provides an opportunity for students to further develop their skills at cooperative play.

WINTER BUS SAFETY

The following winter school bus safety tips will help to keep your

child safe throughout the winter months.

Allow extra time to get to your bus stop. Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early

morning and late evening. Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is

snow and ice.

Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road surfaces.

Dress properly—winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm. Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children waiting for the bus. Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street.

Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt.

On very rare occasions, buses are late because of weather conditions or mechanical prob-lems. Talk to your child about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions:

When possible, wait with your child for the bus. Make sure your child knows a phone number where he can reach

you or another trusted adult. Teach your child how and where to get help. Talk to your child

about what a "safe" stranger is. Help your child set up a bus stop buddy system so your child has someone to wait with for the bus.

The Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week during the week of November 18 to 22. Across the Peel board, schools use many programs and initiatives to prevent bullying and to intervene when bullying happens. Though the programs vary, their messages are consistent. Students are taught to:

define bullying identify forms of bullying identify roles in bullying relationships, for example the person who bullies, the target, the

bystander or the trusted advocate determine how to safely “choose action” to prevent and intervene in bullying & harassment demonstrate character attributes and be a leader to help maintain positive and safe school

communities Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is one of the key items contained in Bill 13: The Accepting Schools Act, that came into effect on September 1, 2012.
