Welcome from the ACC Chair

Welcome to our 74th Provincial Conference and Policy Session.

This year we’ve gathered in Sherwood Park, recently named the best place in Canada to raise children and the best place fi nd a job. It doesn’t get much better than that, and you’ll get plenty of opportunity over the next few days to see why the community has garnered these ratings.

Sherwood Park is unique in Canada because this vibrant urban centre of 60,000 people is part of the larger municipality of Strathcona County, which has 90,000 residents. And the community’s energetic mix of residential, commercial, agricultural and major industrial activity is like none other in Alberta.

It is certainly apt that we’re gathering in Sherwood Park this year because it’s an important part of Alberta’s energy processing centre. The topic of energy is a big one throughout Canada, and we’ve invited some of the sector’s biggest players to speak to you about their plans.

Another signifi cant segment of our conference is, of course, our policy session. Once again, the policies you will consider during the session have been developed by chambers around Alberta, and the grassroots nature of these policies is critical to the success of our advocacy. Decision-makers know we speak with the force of our federation when we present our positions, and that has tremendous impact both provincially and federally.

Thank you for the tremendous work you perform in your communities throughout the year. When you enhance your own region, you help improve all of Alberta. Separately and together, Alberta’s chambers perform a valuable service. Let’s celebrate our work and successes with lots of energy over the next few days.

On behalf of the Members, the Board of Directors, the Organizing Committee volunteers and the Staff of the Sherwood Park and District Chamber of Commerce, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2012 Alberta Chambers of Commerce Provincial Conference and Policy Session in Sherwood Park.

We want to invite you to come SEE Sherwood Park and Strathcona County. “Come SEE” is our theme and we want you to come see what a great place Sherwood Park is Socially, Economically and Environmentally.

We would like you and your family to see such things as Millennium Place, our state of the art multipurpose recreational facility.

Festival Place, our 450 seat theatre for performing arts and our brand new 64,000 square foot Library and our brand new County Hall.

We would also like you to see our wide variety of restaurants, lounges, shopping centres and golf courses. Make sure to join us Friday, May 25 for a great party featuring Kim Mitchell and Trooper.

On the Economic side, you may be interested in seeing what $30 Billion of industrial investment looks like. Yes, that’s billion with a capital B, and that’s just in the last 5 years. We will have tours of millennium, refi neries and related industries for you to see and we have a lineup of interesting speakers to inform on developments in the energy sector.

From an Environmental perspective, we would like you and your family to come see Elk Island National Park, our numerous wild life reserves and wilderness trials, and to come see why Sherwood Park has received Communities in Bloom awards at the Provincial, National and International levels. We would also encourage you to talk to the members of our Environmental Committee, their businesses are leading the world in environment technologies and are part of a center of excellence for a green economy.

Golf Tournament

Event DetailsGOLF TOURNAMENT [ BROADMOOR GOLF COURSE ]

Join the Sherwood Park and District Chamber of Commerce for its annual golf tournament, it takes place Thursday May 24th, 9 am shotgun start at the spectacular Broadmoor Golf Course. Established in 1961, the Broadmoor is recognized as one of the premier courses in Alberta. The 18-hole course is located in the heart of Sherwood Park and features mature trees, well-designed layout and excellent playing conditions for all abilities. Visitors can also enjoy the newly-renovated Clubhouse restaurant, Pro Shop, banquet space and driving range.

This tournament will be a fun “Texas Scramble” style event. Scrambles involve four players per team, each team playing four balls. After each player drives, the best of four is chosen and all four team members will play from that spot, and so on throughout the game. Our tournament also features a sponsor at each hole, who often set up additional fun activities (or yummy food!) for the players.

Kim MitchellSinger-songwriter Kim Mitchell is a true Canadian icon who has achieved gold and multiplatinum records leading the musically eclectic Max Webster in the 70’s and later during his solo career, selling over a million recordings in this country over a 30 year career that is still rocking today. He has won two Juno Awards for “Album of the Year” and “Male Vocalist of the Year”. In the late 70’s and through all of the 80’s Kim toured the largest arenas in the country from one end to the other more times than one can count. He continues to perform at festivals and Performing Arts Theatres to this day. He is a respected song writer having penned and recorded classic hits like ‘Go For Soda,’ ‘Rock N Roll Duty,’ ‘Patio Lanterns,’ ‘I am a Wild Party,’ ‘Easy To Tame’ and ‘All We Are,’ to name just a few - all songs that have become part of the Canadian musical genome… add to that several new songs from his most recent recording Ain’t Life Amazing and audiences

are thrilled to fi nd that participating in a Kim Mitchell concert today is like being at the live recording of a greatest hits box set, often including for good measure a few Max Webster gems like ‘Battlescar’, ‘High Class in Borrowed Shoes’ and ‘Diamonds, Diamonds’.

As an added bonus and a sideline, six years ago, Mitchell was asked to join the on-air staff in the prestigious position of afternoon drive host at Q107 in Toronto adding a week day job to his live performance schedule. During his tenure as host of Q107’s afternoon drive show he has maintained the number one position with men 25-54 and number two with adults 25-54 in the city, which remains consistent with the demographic of his live touring audience nationally. Men, women and kids all love Kim Mitchell and Q107 is honoured to have him on their team. The Southern-Ontario radio scene and contemporary rock would not be the same without him.

He has the respect of peers, fans, and industry types alike. Just what does he consider his greatest achievement? “Shoot, that’s easy,” says Kim, “it’s in the couple of hours the band is onstage, being able to take people to a special place, through our performance and music. When that happens, I’ve accomplished what I set out to do.” Legions of Canadian fans agree!

TrooperIt goes like this: millions of records, a couple dozen hits, sold-out shows across Canada, a Juno Award (Canada’s Grammy) for Band of the Year. Universal Music acknowledges them as “one of Canada’s top fi ve selling bands of all time” and the Vancouver Sun has called them “Canadian rock heroes of the fi rst order…the best performing band in Canada”.

In 2009, Peter Assaff of The Northern Light hailed Trooper’s Ra McGuire and Brian Smith as “the Canadian version of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards” and Joel Rubinoff of The Record wrote, “…this frolicking, rollicking showcase for McGuire’s soaring pop melodies and whimsical wordplay is arguably one of the biggest Canadian bands of all time.”

Then as now, what makes Trooper what they are is great performances and great pop songwriting.

Trooper’s ten studio albums have earned multiple gold and platinum awards and their 6 X Platinum greatest hits, Hot Shots, continues to be one of Universal Music Canada’s best selling catalog CDs and one of the country’s most enduring party soundtracks. In celebration of the band’s 35th Anniversary, a totally updated and re-mastered collection – “Hits From 10 Albums” – was released, featuring songs spanning the entirety of their recording career. John Kereiff, writing in Gonzo Magazine, dubbed the collection “THE summer album of 2010.”

“We’re Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time)”, “Raise a Little Hell”, “The Boys in the Bright White Sportscar”, “Two For the Show”, “Pretty Lady” “Good Ol’ General Hand Grenade”, “Round, Round We Go”, “Santa Maria”, “Janine” - just a few of the Trooper hits that, according to writer Ryan Sparks, “have woven their way into the fabric of this country like no other bands have been able to do. Tune into any radio station from Vancouver to St John’s and you’re bound to encounter one of their dozen hit radio anthems that are still featured in heavy rotation to this day.”

Dan Brisbois of canadianbands.com writes, “They’ve won practically every Canadian music award possible and they’ve been dubbed ‘Canada’s Greatest Party Band’ ... and rightfully so.” In 2009 Bob Mersereau, author of The Top 100 Canadian Albums wrote, “Since it came out in 1979, Trooper’s Hot Shots has been one of the biggest-selling albums in Canadian music history. It has gone six times platinum, and sells consistently, as do tickets to Trooper gigs. There are clubs and festivals across the country where the annual Trooper show is practically an offi cial holiday.” Indeed, Trooper continues to consistently sell out shows across the country - often performing for three generations of fans - demonstrating that the band and its music remain timeless.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Trooper has become a Canadian legend. They continue to perform their huge collection of hits with the vitality and sense of humor that has served them well on their steady march through the hills and valleys of Canadian Rock and Roll. 7

2012 Nominating Committee ReportAs required by the Alberta Chambers of Commerce bylaws, Nominating Committee chairperson Kay Taylor hereby submits the following slate of nominees for election to the 2012/2013 Alberta Chambers of Commerce Executive Committee:

Carman McNary, Q.C., CD — Nominated for Treasurer

Carman McNary is a native of Edmonton, Alberta and was raised west of the city at Stony Plain, Alberta. He attended the University of Alberta where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1978 followed by a Bachelor of Laws in 1981. He has practiced law in Edmonton since 1982, and was named a Queen’s Counsel in 2010. He has practiced law with a smaller fi rm, at the Department of Justice Canada, and since 1999 as a tax and corporate partner of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP. He is a Past Chair of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, a Public Member of the Complaints Inquiry Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta, a former Governor of the Canadian Tax Institute, and a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, the International Fiscal Association, and the Tax Competitiveness Council of the C.D. Howe Institute.

Carman also served as an offi cer in the Canadian Armed Forces, Naval Reserve, from 1975 – 2008, retiring with the rank of Captain (Navy). Over the course of that career, Carman served at sea and ashore on a part-time, sometimes active duty, basis. His appointments include Commander Coastal Defense Sub-District Vancouver in the early 1990’s, Commanding Offi cer of HMCS Glace Bay from 1995-1997 in Halifax, and Commanding Offi cer of HMCS Nonsuch (Edmonton’s Naval Reserve Unit) from 1997-2000, following which he served abroad with NATO as Canadian Representative to the Defense and Security Commission of the Interallied Confederation of Reserve Offi cers (CIOR), focusing on professional development workshops and the fi rst symposium organized by that body. In July 2005, Captain McNary was nominated by Canada and subsequently confi rmed as the International President of the CIOR where he served from 2006 to 2008.

Carman was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration in 1987 and a bar to that Decoration in 1998 and second in 2008. He was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2003 and the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2005. He became a Serving Brother of the Order of St. John in 2006.
