Active Streets Gainesville aims to support equitable access to the community’s public spaces by producing community events that encourage active transportation, engaging with the community, and highlighting the economic and social benefits of livable streets.ASLA Student Chapter partnered with the Florida Community Design Center, The Repurpose Project, and Garden Gate Nursery to create a pop up park for the event in October 2015.

A wishing tree was included in the design, asking users to write down what they think would make public streets better places on watercolor leaves.

I wanted to transform the neglected lawn north of the Architecture building on the University of Florida campus into a place of exploration that showcases some of what Landscape Architects can do. I used all Florida native plants in my design. The transition between the building and the lawn is scattered with cast concrete slabs, as if the built environment is morphing back into the landscape. I designed outdoor classrooms, the walls of which are tulip trees, so students could have beautiful spaces outside to learn. I connected a bioswale fi lled with fl ood and drought tolerant plants to catch water runoff and connect to the small pond adjacent to the building. I also took great consideration in the color and texture of the plantings within the site.

For my first studio design project, I wanted to explore geometric archetypes and how they relate to the process of growing and preparing food. Drawing inspiration from circular irrigation fields and terraced rice paddies, I experimented with form until I was satisfied with my design. A heritage oak is the focal point of the entrance into the culinary institute, while an orchard of peach trees is spread across the gentle slope of the east side lawn, leading users towards the terraced greenhouses.

Located across the street from the University of Florida, currently the site is three grass parking lots used mainly for tailgating. Inspired by Gainesville’s overwhelming urban sprawl, I created a park that told the story of the landscape taking back what was lost.

Orthogonal lines in the part of the park closest to the University represent the urban transformation and provide a much-needed urban plaza in the heart of Gainesville. As users explore north part of the park, the land starts to feel more like a forest with undulating hills, giving users plenty of shade during the hot summer months.
