Summer Reading Challenge

Mrs Ruddock was thrilled with the 47 children who took part in the Bradford Libraries

Challenge ‘Space Race’ over the summer holidays. The children who completed the

challenge enjoyed an afternoon tea treat of juice and cupcakes whilst discussing their

favourite reads.

As we were one of a handful of schools who had the most children taking part, children from

Year 5 and 6 were invited to the Science and Media Museum to take part in a special

Reading Challenge Celebration last Tuesday.

We were very proud to win the ‘Highest Participation Award’ - we received a certificate and

a beautiful planetarium book which will be placed in our library for children to ‘check out’.

Max Jowett-Joyce in Year 3 won the ‘Bingley Library Champion Award’ at this same event

for high engagement in the reading challenge scheme. Well done Max. At the award

ceremony, we met the Lord Mayor and enjoyed an evening of entertainment.

Introducing…. Max

You may have heard whisperings in the playground and yes they are true, we have a new

school pet ‘Max’ the budgie. He is a very handsome fellow and our children love to come and

see him and have a chat with him. He is situated in-between the School Office and Mrs

Hutchinson’s office and you can often hear him tweeting by the office window.

If you/your child would like to ‘bird sit’ Max over any of the upcoming holidays (or weekends

during the winter months) please speak to Mrs Connor in the Office or email

[email protected]

Design Our Christmas Card Comp!

We would like to invite our children to submit a design that we could use for our school

Christmas card - Perhaps you could make our logo Christmassy or just draw something to do

with Christmas.

Requirements: The size of the card will be 147mm x 147mm (square) & there should be a

3mm space around the design to allow for trimming. Only use felt tips, crayons, pencil

crayons etc (not glitter or decoupage etc.) Ernest Cummins Printers have kindly offered the

winning designer to have a free tour of their factory and to see their design made into

Christmas Cards. Named entries must be handed in to the Office by 8th November.

Poppies

On the first day back (4th November) our newly elected School Council Members will be in

the playground selling Stick on Poppies (donation), Slap Bands (£1.50), Wrist Bands (£1),

Zip pullers & Reflectors (50p) etc. in aid of the ‘Royal British Legion’. Once they’re gone,

they’re gone!

Trussell Trust – Food Bank We are collecting items on behalf up to Trussell Trust from now until Christmas, please can donations be dropped off at the School Office. Non-perishable food items such as: Cereal, Tinned Soup, Dry Pasta, Rice, Tinned Tomatoes & Sauces, Tinned Meat, Tinned Vegetables, Tinned Fruit, Tea & Coffee, Biscuits, UHT Milk, Fruit Juice. Food banks also require non-food item such as Toiletries (deodorant, toilet roll, shower gel, shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, tooth paste, wipes), Feminine products and baby supplies. The Trussell Trust support a nationwide network of food banks and together they provide emergency food and support to peopled locked in poverty, and campaign for change to end the need for foodbank in the UK. In the UK, more than 14 million people are living in poverty – including 4.5 million children. They support more than 1,200 food bank centres in the UK to provide a minimum of three days’ nutritionally-balanced emergency food to people who have been referred in crisis, as well as support to help people resolve the crises they face. Between April 2018 and March 2019, food banks in their network provided a record 1.6 million food supplies to people in crisis, a 19% increase on the previous year. We know it takes more than food to end hunger. That’s why the Trussell Trust bring together the experiences of food banks in their network to challenge the structural economic issues that lock people in poverty, and campaign to end the need for food banks in the UK. Visit www.trusselltrust.org for more information.

Book Recommendations We are often asked to help recommend new books suitable for the different year groups, so

here are our top picks of this month! If you have any great ‘Reads’ come and see Mrs

Ruddock so we can share!

Recommended Read for 4+ Pick a Pumpkin by Patricia Toht

Recommended Read for 7+ Mark and Shark: Detectiving & Stuff by John Dougherty

Recommended Read 9+ Flood World, by Tom Huddleston

Fans of Jarvis’ gorgeous illustrations won’t be able to resist this seasonal treat that celebrates all things Halloween and plays down the scary side for younger readers. A real treat of a book – as sweet as a toffee apple and as warm as hot chocolate.

Mark and his best friend Shark run a detective agency, although they’ve not yet been offered any cases to solve. Luckily, they also deal with ‘stuff’, which Shark prefers, as she’s not very good at detectiving. She often gets the wrong end of the stick and tends to mistake most objects for seals, so tries to eat them.

When the sea level rose, a wall was built to protect London. Now Kara and Joe are stuck in the middle between the privileged few inside the wall and the ruthless Mariners out on the ocean. An action-packed, edge-of-the-seat thriller with an environmental edge.

World Mental Health Day

Thank you to everyone that wore yellow to support World Mental Health Day. The whole

school had a relaxing day which consisted of: an assembly on how to look after your body

and mental health, how to relax and wind down followed by Yoga and Mindfulness sessions.

Forensic Science Day

As part of our project with ‘Aspire to STEM’ we arranged for a whole school Forensic Science

day that allowed us to carefully work through a series of activities including; fingerprinting,

blood analysis, microscope work (on clothing fibres), chromatography to name a few. We

managed to solve a crime by eliminating 2 of our 3 suspects and a jury found a guilty party.

The ‘buzz’ for science from the children, together with amazing detective skills made it a

fabulous day.

Reception Reception enjoyed their very first school trip to Harewood House for a day of autumn in the outdoors. They visited the farm, animals and walled garden as well enjoying a boat trip across the lake. The children were exceptionally well behaved and represented our school well on their first outdoor adventure. Well done Reception.

Year 1

During Science Year 1 have been planting seeds and then tending to their broad beans that they have grown. There were some spectacular beans growing and the children got to take them home last week. Let’s hope they look after them as well as they did in school.

Year 2 Year 2 have been learning all about Space and this continued yesterday with their visit to the Science and Media Museum for a special ‘Space’ themed day, more about their trip and pictures to follow in next month’s Newsletter. Year 3 and 4 These year groups have been working together discovering Roman Artefacts on their Archaeological dig which they did in the school grounds. They used shovels, paint brushes and a metal detector to search for artefacts. They found an old metal tin which contained Roman vases, a Gladiator shield and sword, pieces of pottery and a small tin with Roman coins. Great find guys! Year 5 Year 5 have been learning about the history of St Ives, the previous owners and how it has changed over time. They also looked at the geographical features of the St Ives estate and made tourist information leaflets. Using leaves they collected on their recent visit to St Ives, they also made textured leaf prints. Year 6 Our year 6 children have been cooking this week with Mrs Buckroyd making Thai Vegetable Curry and Banana Loaf Cake, they were taste tested by the ‘Bake Off’ judges (Mrs Hutchinson & Mrs Connor) and they received full marks.

Year 6 were also lucky enough to be invited to Bradford Grammar School to take part in their Ilkley Literature Festival activities where an Author (Ross Welford) visited and spoke to the children as well as autographing/signing their books.
