from Richard Hunter General Manager of Sheffi eld City Hall

As we look forward to another fantasti c classical season at Sheffi eld City Hall we welcome an illustrious collecti on of conductors, soloists and orchestras from around the globe.

We are pleased to confi rm that for the third season in a row, our ti cket prices will remain the same. This means that Sheffi eld audiences can experience some of the most celebrated classical music for comparati vely lower rates than other parts of the country.

This year, we welcome orchestras from across Europe, as well as a grand Briti sh off ering from BBC Philharmonic, Manchester Camerata and, of course, our resident orchestra the Hallé, who will perform six concerts throughout the coming season.

Audiences can look forward to a feast of splendid works. The season, which includes a Sibelius ‘thread’ in honour of his 150th birthday, opens with Mozart’s most popular Piano Concerto ‘Elvira Madigan’. There is a Tchaikovsky triptych from the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra, a selecti on from Grieg’s Peer Gynt and the Warsaw Philharmonic take on Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to round off the season.

In our constant work to draw a connecti on for all demographics with classical music, we conti nue to off er £5 ti ckets for students and Under 18s. We strongly encourage you, our audience, to tell any young people you may

know about this fantasti c off er. I personally believe it is imperati ve to conti nue this support for the young people of our region, and for local educati onal establishments, because they are the next generati on of classical enthusiasts. I am also pleased to confi rm that our extremely popular Lunchti me Singing workshops will conti nue throughout 2014 and into 2015. They have proven to have health benefi ts and off er an uplift ing experience for one’s lunchti me acti vity! Dates for upcoming workshops can be found at: www.sheffi eldcityhall.co.uk/events/lunchti me-singing

As always, visitors to the Sheffi eld Internati onal Concert Season make up a central and valuable part of the City Hall community. We truly look forward to each season, not just because of the wonderful programme, but to welcome back our audiences who appreciate and enjoy the excellent music. We wish you an enjoyable 2014/15 concert season.

Best Wishes,Richard

From its opening ‘Promenade’ to its majesti c ‘Grea t Gate of Kiev’, it is a stunning transformati on of the visual into the musical, all the more so because of Ravel’s vividly rendered orchestrati on. SCHUMANN Overture, Scherzo and FinaleMOZART Clarinet ConcertoSIBELIUS Symphony No.2

The Hallé’s outstanding clarinetti st Lynsey Marsh, a nati ve of South Yorkshire, moves to the front of the stage to play Mozart’s sublime Clarinet Concerto. The piece is one of the composer’s most inti mate creati ons, a seamless outpouring of melody, in turn sensuous, poignant and virtuosic. Before that, Ryan Wigglesworth makes his debut in his nati ve Sheffi eld with Schumann’s wonderfully ebullient Overture, Scherzo and Finale. Our tribute to Sibelius’ 150th opens with his inspiring Second Symphony, which has been described as a ‘Liberati on Symphony’: a musical expression of Finnish resistance to Russian oppression. True or not, a sense of epic struggle lies at its core.

TCHAIKOVSKY Marche SlaveTCHAIKOVSKY Violin ConcertoTCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No.5

Who bett er to give this emoti onally supercharged, all-Tchaikovsky concert than Valery Polyansky and the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra? Marche Slave (Slavonic March) scored an instant success on its fi rst performance and according to Tchaikovsky unleashed ‘a tempest of patrioti c enthusiasm’. The composer’s Violin Concerto is one of the greatest ever writt en, an intoxicati ng blend of lyricism and fi nely-craft ed virtuoso writi ng that ends with a brilliant Cossack dance. Natalia Lomeiko is one of its most sought-aft er exponents. Aft er the interval Polyansky conducts Tchaikovsky’s equally popular Fift h Symphony, a work in which a ‘fate moti f’ recurs in fascinati ngly diff erent guises. The symphony is a glorious journey from darkness to light, with a wealth of sumptuous themes along the way.

Sunwook Kim has been a favourite with the Hallé since his winning performance at the 2009 Leeds Internati onal Piano Competi ti on. Tonight he performs one of two Prokofi ev piano concertos that feature this season. The Third Concerto is a work of stunning virtuosity, biti ng wit and melodic richness and is the perfec t vehicle for the Korean’s brilliance. Magyar merriment is the order of the day in Kodaly’s irrepressible Dances of Galanta, a brilliant medley of whirling dances evoking seventeenth-century Hungary. Aft er the interval Jamie Phillips – the Hallé’s youngest-ever Assistant Conductor – directs Dvořák’s much-loved ‘New World Symphony’. This famous work refl ects the vast distances and folk music of America, as well as the composer’s nostalgia for his nati ve Bohemia.

MENDELSSOHN Overture: The Fair MelusineWAGNER Siegfried IdyllMOZART Great Mass in C minor

A fi ne cast of soloists join James Burton, the Royal Northern Sinfonia and the Sheffi eld Philharmonic Chorus for Mozart’s Great C Minor Mass. A remarkable summati on and synthesis of the styles of Bach, Handel and eighteenth century Italian opera, it is also quintessenti ally Mozarti an. From the solemn ‘Kyrie eleison’ to the heartrending ‘Christi e eleison’ and the loud rejoicing of the ‘Gloria’, Mozart treats us to a remarkable blend of liturgical and operati c elements. Mendelssohn’s lovely The Fair Melusine is a gloriously watery aff air that infl uenced Wagner in his own rippling prelude to Das Rheingold. And talking of Wagner, his lyrical Siegfried Idyll was a surprise birthday gift to his wife Cosima. In this lovingly-composed work he musically foresaw the future life of their newly-born son Siegfried.

Xuefei Yang has been described by the New York Sun as ‘one of the most extraordinary instrumentalists in the world’. She joins Akira Mori and the English Chamber Orchestra for Rodrigo’s perennially popular Concierto de Aranjuez, a work with a soulfully poeti c slow movement and much else besides. The ECO’s excepti onal leader Stephanie Gonley is the evening’s second soloist in Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, a shimmering and wonderfully atmospheric picture of the English countryside. Either side of these much-anti cipated solo performances come Mozart’s opulent tribute to his favourite city, and Manuel de Falla’s glorious Spanish masterpiece. It promises to be an unforgett able evening.

SCHUMANN Piano ConcertoELGAR Symphony No.2

Sir Mark Elder is a masterly interpreter of Elgar and tonight he conducts the composer’s remarkable Second Symphony, a work Elgar described as ‘the passionate pilgrimage of the soul’. It is one of the great romanti c symphonies, an enigmati c mixture of public and private Elgar. The score is headed with Shelley’s words ‘Rarely, rarely comest thou, Spirit of Delight’, suggesti ng the music’s restless and tragic character, opti mism giving way to resignati on and a deep nostalgia for bygone ti mes. It is a remarkable musical journey for performers and audience alike. In the fi rst half, acclaimed German pianist Marti n Stadtf eld joins Sir Mark and the Hallé for Schumann’s poeti c Piano Concerto, a passionate work writt en for the composer’s beloved wife Clara.

From the city of Mozart’s birth, Camerata Salzburg visits Sheffi eld to bring its disti ncti ve style to bear on two of the composer’s most alluring and immediate works. Nicola Benedetti , a violinist of poise and consummate musicianship, is soloist in the wonderfully operati c G major Violin Concerto. Aft er the interval is Bruckner’s breathtakingly beauti ful Adagio, followed by one of Mozart’s most delightf ul symphonic creati ons. His Symphony No.29 evinces youthful energy and puckish humour and is sure to send you home on a high. Bartók’s Diverti mento, writt en on the eve of the Second World War contains stunning eff ects, remarkable textures and fascinati ngly bold contrasts, and creates its own truly Hungarian exuberance.

High-fl ying Finn, John Storgårds, conducts the BBC Philharmonic in an exciti ng concert of Scandinavian and Russian music. Grieg actually disliked Ibsen’s Peer Gynt, but for a producti on of the play he composed some of his most inspired and best-known music – including ‘Morning’ and ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’. Carl Nielsen’s First Symphony – a remarkable achievement for a 27 year old composer – is both disti ncti vely Danish and highly personal in style. Then a tuneful tribute to the composers of the eighteenth century, Tchaikovsky’s ‘Rococo Variati ons’, here performed by rising star of the cello, Leonard Elschenbroich. The evening comes to a sti rring conclusion with Sibelius’ great hymn to his compatriots, Finlandia.

GRIEG Holberg SuiteHAYDN Violin Concerto No.1SIBELIUS Rakastava (The Lover)DVOŘÁK Serenade for Strings

The Manchester Camerata presents an evening of favourite works for string orchestra directed by the magneti c Adi Brett . Grieg’s charming Holberg Suite was composed to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of the playwright Ludvig Holberg and takes as its inspirati on the music of the Baroque era. Adi then becomes soloist in Haydn’s Violin Concerto, a lovely work with a serenade-like slow movement and an uplift ing fi nale. Timpani and triangle enrich the soundscape in Sibelius’ evocati ve Rakastava, a three-movement suite inspired by Nordic mythology. Finally we hear Dvořák’s enchanti ng Serenade for Strings, a sunny work that simply brims with great tunes.

FRIDAY 27TH MARCH 7.00PM

The HalléKarl-Heinz Steff ens conductorDenis Kozhukhin piano

TCHAIKOVSKY Swan Lake SuitePROKOFIEV Piano Concerto No.1SIBELIUS Symphony No.1

When Denis Kozhukhin gave his Carnegie Hall debut in 2014, he received a rapturous standing ovati on. Tonight he plays Prokofi ev’s wonderfully iconoclasti c and fi endishly virtuosic First Piano Concerto. Aft er a performance of the work in 1914, an astonished listener described it as ‘young man’s music’ like ‘the onrushing forwards in my one unfortunate soccer experience’! However, its vigorous athleti cism vies with passages of tender, Rachmaninov-like lyricism. Sibelius’ First Symphony owes much to the infl uence of Tchaikovsky, yet it remains an intensely personal and highly original statement. In turn haunti ng, stormy and passionate, it culminates in one of the most sti rring ‘big tune’ fi nales in the repertoire. The concert opens with another wonderful treat: the richly melodic orchestral suite from Tchaikovsky’s beguiling ballet score Swan Lake.

SCHUBERT Symphony No.3BEETHOVEN Symphony No.9 ‘Choral’

For this splendid fi nal concert of the season, Sheffi eld’s very own Philharmonic Chorus welcomes the Warsaw Philharmonic and the dynamic Jacek Kaspszyk for a performance of Beethoven’s iconic ‘Choral Symphony’. Aft er its dark opening the work develops through the cosmic energy of its scherzo and a deeply meditati ve slow movement to the rapturous triumph of Schiller’s ‘Ode to Joy’ and a frenzied, almost Bacchanalian conclusion. It is sure to be an unforgett able experience. The youthful Third Symphony of the Beethoven-worshipping Schubert begins with a slow introducti on and ends with an exciti ng tarantella. Incredibly, the composer was a mere 18 when he wrote this highly accomplished and hugely enjoyable work.

BOCCHERINI-BERIO ‘Riti rata nott urna di Madrid’MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto in E minorMAHLER Symphony No.1

Markus Stenz and the Hallé take on Mahler’s incandescent First Symphony. This unforgett able work opens with birdsong and distant military fanfares before proceeding via a wonderfully rusti c Ländler and the sounds of a Jewish funeral to its inspirati onal, life-affi rming fi nale. The concert begins with Luciano Berio’s joyful take on a piece by the eighteenth-century composer Luigi Boccherini. The latt er’s ‘Riti rata nott urna di Madrid’, a delightf ul evocati on of night ti me on the streets of the Spanish capital, was so popular in his day that Boccherini transcribed it for four diff erent instrumental combinati ons. In 1975 Berio ‘mixed’ those four versions in this enjoyably quirky arrangement. The superb Simone Lamsma then performs Mendelssohn’s much-loved Violin Concerto, an irresisti ble fusion of romanti c melodiousness and classical restraint.
