Each year, golfers, employee donors and grateful patients make donations to Sharp Grossmont Hospital to support the hospital’s greatest needs. This allows Sharp Grossmont to be able to purchase new, cutting edge technology that they would not be able to otherwise. Once again, donors have allowed the hospital to purchase the new da Vinci XI Surgical Robot – the latest and most advanced minimally invasive surgical robot. The addition of this $2.1 million robot allows us to perform increasingly more complex procedures robotically and to recruit the best and brightest surgeons to our hospital. The XI version has an integrated table that can move the patient so that gravity exposes anatomy otherwise difficult to get to. An older version of this robot, the da Vinci SI, was also purchased through philanthropy and will continue being used. In fact, all of the surgical robots in the Sharp HealthCare system were made possible through the generous support of our community. Once again, the gifts to the Foundation have made a tremendous impact in advancing patient care. Thank you. Dr. C. Sharp Grossmont is proud to announce our new Care Clinic, opening in early 2018. Conveniently located in the Grossmont Medical Arts building across from the hospital, the Care Clinic will serve as a destination for patients with urgent medical needs that are non-life threatening. The modern, naturally-lit space features 12 treatment rooms, a spacious guest lounge and an outdoor terrace. The Care Clinic will serve patients with extended hours from 8 am to 11 pm daily, serving as an alternative for patients seeking non-emergent care. Patients will also have an opportunity to schedule online appointments.  “Sharp Grossmont is uniquely positioned to offer these expanded, high quality services to our patients, particularly in East County,” said Scott Evans, PhamD, CEO of Sharp Grossmont Hospital.

GETS PERSONAL Beth Morgante shares her families’ Sharp HospiceCare journey

I have had the privilege of fundraising for and giving to to Sharp HospiceCare for over 20 years. But like many things in life, you don’t truly understand the importance until you have a personal experience.

My mother in law, Pat Morgante, was diagnosed with stage 4 inflammatory breast cancer. She and my father in law, Tony, were determined to fight it but at 84 years old, it was a tough battle. I was finally able to convince them it was time for the professionals at Sharp HospiceCare’s BonitaView Home to step in and be the caregivers – so my father-in-law Tony could go back to being her husband and enjoy the remaining time they had together.

BonitaView Home was everything I knew it would be and more. From giving our mom a much needed hair cut to singing her favorite song, not only was it what was best for her, but it was best for the whole family. Our dad could go back to being her spouse instead of her caregiver.

Our generous community members are what make it all possible. We are humbled by the ways families show appreciation – generous support for our many programs offered, participating in our annual regatta, volunteering to make memory bears for grieving families or the many other ways. As someone who has benefited personally from the generous support of our community – thank you.

Last year, over 2,000 people came together to play golf, sail or do the hustle to support Sharp

Grossmont Hospital and Sharp HospiceCare – raising over $1.25 million. Our annual Golf Tournament, Sharp HospiceCare Regatta and Gala have a significant impact on the care we are able to provide to the San Diego community. These events represent hundreds of sponsors –

individuals and corporations whose generosity has helped us purchase a da Vinci XI robot, remodel the

David and Donna Long Center for Cancer Treatment and continue to support HospiceCare for our patients.

To learn more about how to get involved in one of our events, please contact Bill Navrides at [email protected] or 619-740-4316.

Sometimes you know when you just have to “make it happen.” In May, that realization came to several Sharp Grossmont Hospital nurses caring for a patient who was nearing the end of life. The patient’s son, Derek, an A-plus student, was to graduate from La Mesa’s Helix High School in a week, and his caregivers knew their patient wouldn’t be there to cheer him on.

That’s when two Sharp Grossmont nurses, Joni Rice, RN and Shellene Masters, RN, decided something needed to be done. They worked with Helix High School to quickly put a plan together and talked to the patient’s wife, Linh.

“When I told her what we wanted to do, she broke down in my arms and cried,” says Masters. Staff then hurried to line up logistics with the school and recruited the hospital’s Food and Nutrition Services, who donated a table full of food and drinks for the large number of family and hospital staff that would attend.

The next day, May 25, staff from Helix High, countless family members and hospital staff gathered in the patient’s room and hallway for what would be an

emotional cap and gown ceremony. The formal ceremony was performed, with Derek’s academic counselor on hand to announce that, thanks to a whopping 4.84 GPA, he was graduating with high honors.

And all the while, his admiring father looked on from his hospital bed.

“It was wonderful,” says Linh. “He always bragged about the kids being top students in school. Our family was looking forward to the graduation, and it was very meaningful. The next day, he said he was proud of the kids and can let go now.”

He passed away just two days later, with his family by his side.

In a letter to the nursing staff that cared for his father and pulled off the ceremony, the graduate and UC Berkeley-bound student penned his heartfelt thanks. “One of my father’s wishes and dreams was to be able to see me live the life he always wanted for himself and for me … Although it pains me that he won’t be here to see me achieve that life, seeing me graduate was one of his deepest desires. Thank you for granting him that final wish.”

On September 27, a good friend and devoted supporter of Grossmont Hospital Foundation, Bill Verbeck passed away at the

age of 90. Bill generously supported the Emergency

and Critical Care Center, the new Heart and Vascular Center and led the campaign to bring TomoTherapy to Sharp Grossmont. Bill was inspiring to all of us and Sharp Grossmont is a better place because of him.

Sharp has embarked on a new marketing campaign – Every Moment Matters. At Sharp, your treatment starts with the way you’re treated. It doesn’t cost more to care, but it makes all the difference. See how every moment matters at Sharp.com

Thanks to Virginia Napierskie Family, Grossmont Healthcare District, Sharp Grossmont Medical Staff and many others, the annual gala raised over $460,000 for the David and Donna Long Center for Cancer Treatment.

In 2017, Sharp Grossmont Hospital received our third re-designation as a Magnet hospital – the highest award recognizing nursing excellence.

With the stock market at record highs, now would be a good time to discuss an alternative to a cash-

charitable donation. Gifting appreciated stock is

one of the most effective means of tax savings available. By gifting

securities to Grossmont Hospital Foundation a taxpayer can receive an income tax deduction for the fair market value of the securities and eliminate any capital gain assessments on the future sale of the securities. In some cases that could be a savings of 37.1% when taking into account state income tax.

The benefits of gifting appreciated stock or a concentrated equity position are:

1. The satisfaction of knowing your money is “invested” in a cause important to you.

2. Being eligible to receive an income tax charitable contribution deduction for the full fair market value of the stock; and

3. Being able to avoid all capital gain taxes on the stock.

A gift of stock in certificate form should be postmarked by December 31, or your financial advisor can arrange for a year-end gift of stock from your account.

Conversely, if you own stock that has gone down in value, sell the stock and take the loss and then contribute the after-sale proceeds to the Foundation.

Your gift of appreciated stock is fully deductible up to 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). A gift of cash is deductible up to 50% of your AGI.

Individual retirement arrangements (IRA’s) can also be a great vehicle for end of year charitable contributions. Donors age 701/2 or older can directly transfer, tax-free, up to $100,000 per year from their IRA to an eligible charity, like Grossmont Hospital Foundation.

For more information or for a confidential, no obligation meeting, please contact Norman W. Timmins, JD at Grossmont Hospital Foundation at 619-740-4315 or at [email protected]. Thank you and happy holidays.

The Legacy Society honors a distinguished group of patients, families and community members who stand apart through their example of caring and thoughtful planning. Legacy Society donors use estate planning as a pathway to becoming significant philanthropists today with gifts that will provide for the future. Our Legacy Society recognizes those who, through a bequest, trust arrangement, retirement plan or life insurance policy, are making a contribution to the future of Sharp Grossmont Hospital and/or Sharp HospiceCare.
