The charity shop in Shannon has been open since April. It came about after a few people in the Shannon Christian Church wanted to do something in the community and realised, through meeting a wide variety of people and nationalities in the church, that there are a lot of people in Shannon from other countries who are away from their families at Christmas and end up having to spend Christmas alone. Over the past few years Pearl Good (one of the chief volunteers at the c h a r i t y shop) and her family have invited p e o p l e , who are on their own, into their home for Christmas, and last year the expanded their generosity by inviting anyone on their own to come to the church and spend Christmas Day there. It was a great success with lots of people bringing food (Christmas specialities from their own countries) and along with Rosemary Power from Christchurch and Marie Rowland of the Shannon Resource Centre they organised a collection of presents which were given out on the day, so that no-one left empty handed. They are hoping to repeat the

ShaNNON ChariTy ShOp successful event this year. They then decided that they would open up once a week on a Thursday to provide a service to people in need whereby anybody can come along and for €5 fill a bag with clothes, toys or anything else they may need. As such they are constantly looking for any unwanted clothes, toys, books, baby equipment, etc. So, if you have any items of

clothing, toys etc. that you don’t need, please drop them into the Charity Shop in the S h a n n o n C h r i s t i a n C h u r c h (beside Indigo Signs in Smithstown) any Thursday and it will be gratefully received.

As well as the shop there is the Caring Cuppa Kitchen where they provide free tea, coffee, soup, sandwiches and a friendly listening ear for anyone who wants them. The Caring Cuppa are planning a special Christmas dinner on Thursday 16th December instead of the usual soup and sandwiches. If you would like more information please call Pearl on 086 2202663 or come along to the church any Thursday or Sunday at 10am where you will be very welcome.

SHANNON SCENE - the local magazine for shannon

‘Beauty and The Beast’ by Mike Finn starring Myles Breen as Mrs Potts will be showing at LIT Millennium Theatre on the following dates: Monday 27th Dec 2.30pm, Tuesday 28th Dec 2.30pm, Wednesday 29th Dec 2.30pm and 6.30pm, Thursday 30th Dec 2.30pm and 6.30pm, Sunday 2nd Jan 2.30pm & 6.30pm, Monday 3rd 2.30pm and 6.30pm, Thursday 6th 2.30pm and 6.30pm, Friday 7th 2.30pm and 6.30pm, Saturday 8th 2.30pm and 6.30pm, Sunday 9th 2.30pm.Belle is the prettiest girl in the village, or any village for that matter. Her sisters, Barbie and Sindy, are not even slightly pretty. In fact they are pretty ugly. Like all ugly sisters, Barbie and Sindy are jealous, mean and spiteful. It’s little wonder that their father, the (not very good) inventor, Prof. Fizzabang, tries to get away from them as much as possible.

On a business trip to Dromouldy Castle, Fizzbang picks a rose for Belle and lands everyone in a basket-full of trouble. After encountering a collection of animated furniture and crockery, Fizzbang is forced to send Belle to live in the castle to appease an ugly Beast

who lives there. At the castle, Belle is treated with great kindness by the Beast, even if his nightly proposals of marriage are a bit embarrassing and she keeps an eye on her father by means of a magic mirror. Before long, however, Belle begins to miss her father, and even her ugly sisters (a bit) and so the kindly Beast, lets her go back home for a visit. The joyful reunion is spoilt when Belle’s other suitor, the evil

Joey Diablo, along with his slimy sidekick Sly, use the magic mirror for their own dastardly purposes - they plot to kill the beast. In the end, it will take all the magic of a (slightly off course) Fairy Godmother, to arrange a traditional happy ending.

SHANNON SCENE - the local magazine for shannon

With job losses now at record levels and retailers and suppliers struggling to survive, it is vital that we support our own local businesses during these difficult timesBuying locally not only helps neighbours, it helps the local economy. Here is why it is important that shoppers start in their own back garden.According to economic studies every €10 spent locally generates a further €24 benefit to the local economy. If that €10 is spent outside the locality it adds nothing to the local economy and further undermines the viability of businesses in the area while threatening the livelihoods of suppliers and others who rely on local businesses.Shopping at a local small business means supporting friends and neighbours, the community, and the local economy. However, it also offers shoppers other benefits that cannot be gained by shopping in the large chain stores. To help understand the importance of buying locally, here are five benefits of supporting the local small business owner.1. Reduce Environmental ImpactLocal purchases generally require less transportation, thereby lowering transportation costs as well as the pollution associated with them. In addition, shoppers who buy in their own neighborhood travel shorter distances reducing their own pollution.2. Reinvest in the CommunityLocal business owners live in the community and are, therefore, more invested in the future of that community. Revitalization of local communities is important to keeping neighbourhoods strong. Plus by shopping locally shoppers reinvest in their own community.

ThE iMpOrTaNCE OF BuyiNG LOCaLLy3. Magnify the ChoicesWant to ensure innovation? Buy local. Anyone can walk into a big department or chain store and buy what everyone else owns. However, supporting the small business owner means the opportunity to find truly unique, one-of-a-kind services, gifts and products.4. Support the Local EconomyAccording to research, small businesses make up 99.7% of all employers. Supporting the local business owner means supporting friends and neighbours too. Plus locally owned businesses are more likely to buy from other local businesses, service providers and local growers.5. Receive Top-Notch ServiceResearch has shown that in order to compete, small business owners focus on quality customer service and quality products. They are more likely to go above and beyond by providing extra service. And because they are involved in running the business they tend to be experts in their field. It is impossible to buy and produce everything locally, however there are perhaps more local options available than most consumers realise. And dealing with local businesses also gets you a much more personalized level of service. There is something to be said for establishing a relationship with the people you do business with. This holds true for big and small transactions. Make an extra effort to buy local when you can and make sure to talk to the businesses and let them know if there is something they can do for you.Shopping local saves petrol, saves time and brings more Euro’s directly back into the community.

CLarE COMhairLE Na NÓG

Clare Comhairle na nÓg (Youth Council) is a forum for young people aged between 7-17, that is held annually to consult young people in County Clare on issues that are important to them. Consultation offers young people the opportunity to express their opinions and listen to the views of other young people and policy makers. There is a Comhairle na nÓg in every local authority area. Young people currently get nominated through their schools to attend. In October, 34 secondary school pupils from Shannon participated in the first of four local area sessions of the 2010 Clare Comhairle na nÓg.This forum was organised by the Clare County Development Board and was supported by Clare County Council, Clare Youth Services, An Garda Síochána, Clare Sports Partnership, Clare Local Development Company, and the Clare Youth Officer (VEC), under the County Development Board.

Students, ranging in ages from 12-18, of Saint Caimin’s Community School and St. Patrick’s Comprehensive School gathered in the Oakwood Arms to discuss a range of issues, including the provision and use of facilities and services for youth in Shannon and adults’ perception of young people.Five students were selected by secret ballot to represent the Shannon area on the Clare Comhairle na nÓg 2010-11 Committee. The successful delegates were Mary Hayes (17), Siobhan Breen (15) and Clodagh Shortiss (16) of St Patrick’s Comprehensive, and Adam Birchall (16) and Mark Freeman (12) of St. Caimin’s.Mayor of Clare Councillor Christy Curtin, who attended this forum, congratulated the students for the enthusiasm with which they discussed the various issues of relevance to them. When all four meetings have taken place, five local Comhairle delegates will proceed to represent Clare in the annual Dáil na nÓg or “youth parliament” in the New Year along with children from 33 other local authority areas.Further information is available from Nicola Cullinan, Comhairle na nÓg Coordinator at 065-6846222 or [email protected].

MiLLErS LOFT - NEW CaFE & BiSTrO iN SixMiLEBriDGEA lot of people will know Joe Bracken as the friendly face from Angel Flowers where he worked for the past 5 years. But before that he worked as a chef in several places in Shannon, including the Great Southern and Element Six, and he has always wanted to return to the restaurant business.

When the opportunity to take over the Dine and Wine Bistro in Sixmilebridge in the summer came up he jumped at the chance to take the three year lease. He was a bit apprehensive at first, but after doing some research he realised that there was no coffee shop in Sixmilebridge and what people want is a place to go where there is plain, simple food at a reasonable price. So Joe has opened the Millers Loft, serving breakfast, lunches and dinners in the lovely setting beside the river.

It is a great place to meet for breakfast or a morning coffee and also delicious lunches. The Millers Loft is also open on Friday and Saturday evenings for fabulous bistro style dinners.Joe’s aim is to provide traditional food at affordable prices as he is aware that eating out is reduced during a recession, and his prices reflect this. Joe is very optimistic about the future of the business and his enthusiasm for the business is obvious when you walk through the door. There is always a very warm smile and welcome, and the food is all home cooked and delicious. He wants to provide a gathering place where people can meet and have a chat. There is seating for 20 people upstairs and 4 downstairs, with a marquee at the rear of the premises which caters for larger groups. Two local girls have been employed in the business. The Millers Loft can be booked for parties or special occasions and is currently taking Christmas bookings. Special Christmas dinner menu at €30 per person, including a bottle of wine per couple. It opens daily (except Monday) with late opening on Friday and Saturday.
