Keeping it green and ethical White weddings were the fairytale stereotype but green is the colour of fashionable weddings. Going green is the trend in almost every area of life and is spilling over into the wedding scene as well. Many couples are choosing organic fabrics, flowers, food and invitations, etc.Measuring the carbon footprint of your big day will be top of the list for a growing number of couples this year. But the issue is not only about sending recycled paper invitations and using sustainable materials… a bigger issue of ethical weddings is also growing in popularity: think about using charity donations as favours, supporting local suppliers, renting a venue for a charitable or cultural cause, giving your gown to charity shops after the event…civil ceremonies boom in ireland Those looking to tie the knot in Ireland and not necessarily interested in religious ceremonies don’t have to ‘emigrate’ anymore to have a civil service in a lovely venue. With the new law that came into effect in November 2007, couples marrying in Ireland can now choose their venue (with some restrictions) and forget dark and un-romantic registry offices.According to the CSO, the number of civil marriages was over 22% of all marriages in 2006, five times higher than

If you’re planning a wedding, you’re probably wondering what will be trendy and hip. There’s no denying that 2009 Wedding Trends will be heavily influenced by two things. Firstly, the economy. It seems dreary to be constantly talking about how the economy will impact

your life, but fortunately, there are already ways in which a smaller budget can inspire couples to have more creative, intimate, and personal weddings. These weddings are benefiting from a heavy dose of style, influenced by the many images and ideas circulating around the blogosphere. This chic style will be the second biggest influence this year. Budgets might be tight, but that doesn’t mean that luxury and glamour are going away. By having fewer guests, couples can have more opulent details, like elaborate favours, beautiful wines and gourmet tasting menus. With such a backdrop, it then feels right to be in your tuxedos and gowns, surrounded only by your truest friends and loved ones.

in 1996, when just under 6% of all marriages were civil ceremonies. 2009 will definitely see an increase in the number of couples choosing civil ceremonies in Ireland. The new laws are great news for Irish venues as it opens lots of new marketing options and it will encourage people from abroad wishing to have their wedding in Ireland, so it will help with Irish tourism.Wedding ‘it’ colour The fashion runways walked it and the bridal magazines made it official - gray is the new brown for weddings in 2009! For the past few years, chocolate brown has been the “It Colour” popping up in weddings as a hip neutral, and combined with bright pink or cheery yellow. While chocolate brown isn’t going anywhere, gray switches the colour palette to cooler tones. Even though gray is a cool tone, it doesn’t mean you can’t spice it up! There are a wide variety of colour combinations you can chose from but the added bonus with this trend….is that you can mix and match colours that you never thought would go! And keep in mind, gray comes in all tones and variations such as a lavender or pewter (adding a touch of purple or blue to it). So think out of the box!!

Wedding dressesYou’ll want to choose the dress that’s most comfortable and flattering to you, but being aware of wedding dress trends for spring 2009 can help you make the difficult decision of which dress to buy for this important day. If the look of the traditional wedding dress has never really appealed to you, you can be ultra chic and modern on your wedding day with a short wedding dress. Shorter wedding dresses being shown for 2009 have fitted bodices with full skirts that stop at or just above the knee. Many are strapless or have thin spaghetti straps. These dresses may be appealing if you’ll be having a casual, outdoor wedding and if you have the figure to carry it off. The one shouldered gown is very popular for 2009. This chic, distinctively modern look in wedding dress appeals to those who like a slightly less traditional look.White is still the traditional favorite when it comes to wedding dresses but colour is the new trend for 2009. Not only will softer pastel shades be popular but warmer splashes of color including scarlet red make their appearance.Contact Mairead Neil for more advice (see ad on page 4)

shoesThe wonderful thing about shoes in 2009 is that there are no set rules. It’s all about comfort and adding a bit of spice to your dress. The bigger trend in all of this is that your bridal shoe is no longer a match-to-white specialized bridal shoe!! It’s all about cocktail and evening wear translated into bridal, if that makes any sense at all! Tip: be sure to break your shoes in before the wedding day.Wedding hair stylesIn recent years, brides have been going away from wearing a veil and that trend continues into 2009. Instead, wear your hair pulled off your face and secure it with a tiara or headband. The emphasis is on romance in 2009, including loose updos, ringlet curls and long, soft waves. One of the most popular trends in terms of bridal hairstyles is the half-up, half-down look. This style pulls your hair away from your face, however it also leaves the back portion of the hair long and flowing for a more natural .For more advice contact The Salon Hair & Beauty (front page ad) Abbey Beauty (ad on page 31) Ilona’s Hair Studio (ad on page 9)

affordable and reWearable bridesmaid dresses Forget the peach tulle atrocities of yesteryear. 2009 brides are considerate, and mindful of the economy, so they’re looking for bridesmaid dresses that are truly rewearable,

and don’t come with a sky-high price tag. For a beach wedding, consider telling your bridesmaids that they can wear a knee-length, spaghetti-strap dress in any shade of blue. They’ll not only be able to shop the department store sales, but your wedding will reflect the beautiful colours of the ocean. If you still want a unified bridal party look, consider gathering your bridesmaids for a group shopping expedition. Talk to Mairead Neill (ad on pg 4)

Wedding reception decorationsBrides are choosing centerpieces that are in the same colour tones, but of different sizes. This gives the reception tables a more interesting look and a less “coordinated” feel. Candles add light and romance to any setting and come in a myriad of shapes sizes and colours. A new trend

top trends in Wedding bouquet designWedding bouquet design is constantly evolving along with current fashions and trends. Simple and elegant designs are popular at the moment; these include hand-tied bouquets and posy bouquets. There is now a choice of ways to accent your bouquet. Diamante and other crystals can be incorporated into the design and these are quite popular with young brides. The use of decorative wire has now reached designer status and incorporating feathers into the wedding bouquet design is another way to add a modern touch. Roses are still the most popular wedding flowers. But tulips and gerber daisies (gerberas) are also well-liked and there has been a rise in the number of people asking for tropical flowers in their bouquets. Brides are becoming much more daring in their colour schemes, eg. pink, with purple and burgundy.Angel Flowers (see ad on page 8) orShannon Flower Studio (see page 11)

in unity candles allows the bride and groom to personalize the candle with names, monogram and wedding date, creating a wonderful keepsake for years to come. For more info talk to Bernie in Bunratty Candles (see pg 11)Wedding photographyThe photo-journalistic (candid) approach to wedding photography is preferred by many brides to the traditional posed shots. Capturing the day’s events as they happen helps tell the story of your wedding. Naturally, posed pictures are still enjoyed and requesting that some of the photos be black and white is common. For more information contact Ryall Photography (ad on page 6)or House Of Fun (ad on page 8)Wedding stationeryWedding invitations come in all shapes and sizes and the one that has been very popular recently is the pocket fold invitation. A unique invitation which says style and elegance and incorporates your additional info cards like directions, RSVP, accommodation details or an added before or after celebration and then neatly folds up into a standard size invite keeping everything in place. 2009 will also see a more economic trend playing its roll, its got to in this day and age but at the same time you don’t have to skimp on the quality. Nearly Hitched (see ad on page 5) orMcNamara Printers (see ad on page 7)children’s attireFlower girls are sporting fairy wings and cute wands, although baskets of rose petals, posies, pomanders, and dainty purses remain popular. A-line dresses and dresses accented with chiffon overlays steal the show. Floral head wreaths or dainty tiaras finish the look. The tuxedo is still the most popular choice for the ring bearer. Wedding caKesWedding cakes today are expected to look gorgeous, fit in with the overall wedding theme, and taste eye-rollingly good. Cupcake towers continue to be a strong trend for 2009 weddings, but this is also the year that miniature cakes in geometric shapes will make their debut. Towers of square cakes made an introductory appearance for Summer and Autumn 2008 wedding seasons, and are becoming a top pick for brides in 2009. Look for classic square cakes decked out in ribbons and flowers, in a tiered or staggered style for extra appeal. These cakes can also be decorated as miniature ‘presents’, adding a unique and festive touch to any wedding party. Contact The Fairy Queen for your own unique cake ideas (see ad on page 11 - opposite)Wedding entertainmentA number of wedding entertainment companies provide options for every part of the event including: Church/Ceremony Music, Arrivals/Pre Reception Music, Dinner Music, Band for After Dinner Reception & DJ. If you are thinking of having a number of elements beyond Band & DJ it may work out more cost efficient to book from one company, where possible, as most entertainment

companies will offer significant discounts for package deals. It also means you are dealing with only one person on the day with regards to your wedding entertainment instead of 3 or 4 different individuals.Contact James Sexton (see ad on this page) for more advice, also Wedding Singer (ad on page 9) or House of Fun (see ad on page 8)Wedding maKe upYou’ve got the guy, the dress and the flowers -- all perfect, of course -- but don’t overlook the one detail that will make yours a picture-perfect wedding: your face. The makeup you wear every day is probably not the best choice for your walk down the aisle. So before taking your vows, take some advice from local experts. The Salon, Hair & Beauty (see front page ad) or Abbey Beauty (see page 31) orTouch of a Brush (see ad below)Wedding JeWelleryWhen it comes to weddings finding the right jewellery for the day of is important. What is more important however is the jewellery that will be worn by the bride and groom for what one hopes will be the rest of their lives. Wedding rings show the fashion in jewellery at the time the rings were exchanged. 2009 brings with it new trends in wedding bands for both men and women. While colourless diamonds are still king, many brides are receiving a combination of colourless and coloured diamonds or just a band with coloured diamonds. Curved bands are becoming extremely popular, especially for those brides whose engagement ring settings are unusually shaped or larger than the average setting. Enhancers allow the engagement ring and wedding band to look like one. 2009 is bringing more elegant, complex, and unique enhancers to fit engagement rings. Overseas weddings have increased in popularity but require a good deal of planning and attention to detail, in order to ensure a stress free, successful and enjoyable wedding day. The rise of couples getting married abroad over the past decade can be attributed to

several factors; waiting until later in life to get married; better financial security which give couples more control over events; but probably the most compelling reason is cost. A wedding abroad costs a fraction of the amount of a wedding at home and many couples think it makes sense to combine the happiest day of your life with your honeymoon and saving a fortune. Obviously a hot sunny climate is preferred for most overseas weddings but you need to do your research to make sure that you are not planning your big day during the monsoon or earthquake season. Some countries make it relatively easy to exchange your vows, whereas others involve complicated paperwork,Hiring a reputable wedding planning company or using a travel agent that specialises in overseas weddings will help ensure that your wedding goes smoothly as they will know all the best locations for the wedding ceremony and the reception and a thousand other little details that may get overlooked if you try to do it yourself. Getting married abroad creates memories that will last forever and you will want everything to be perfect. Allowing a wedding planner to iron out all the details so that you can focus on what's really important—like the honeymoon and marriage—will make the memories happy and positive.

Tickets cost €70 and Meara Bhaile Gerry Flynn has nominated two charities to benefit from the proceeds which are Shannon Family Resource Centre and Wolfe Tones Camogie Club.

Every year this well established fundraiser has provided vital support to clubs and organisations throughout the Shannon area. Now, more than ever, these organisations are depending on financial support to survive. In terms of this year’s event, it is very important that local people are encouraged to support facilities in their own community.

Shannon Family Resource Centre recently lost funding for some vital services that they provide in the community such as the Homework Club and the Kool Kids Club. Shannon FRC was set up in response to local needs i.e. deficits in childcare, training, employment, and second chance education.Wolfe Tones Camogie club is a voluntary sporting organisation catering for over 150 girls in seven teams from under 8s to seniors. Down through the years they have won many honours and are proud of their success on and off the field. Many people are not aware that Shannon has the only dedicated camogie club in the country and they are now nearing the completion of their pitch development. As always there will be a funding shortfall to complete the development. However with the continuing support of the local community, they are confident they can achieve their goals.Tickets can be purchased from the Town Clerk Tomas MacCormaic (061) 362319, Meara Bhaile Gerry Flynn (087) 2188654 or any member of the Shannon Town Council. Any sponsorship or donations towards these two charities will be greatly appreciated.

ALLOtMENtS IN SHANNONShannon gardeners were allocated their new Allotments in the vicinity of Illaunmanagh Cemetery in March. 37 allotments each about 150 square meters in size have been allocated to local people on lands made available by Clare County Council and the cost per annum is €40 per plot. A further ten applicants have been placed on a waiting list. Plots will have to be vacated each February and reassigned again in March.

SHANNON MODEL FLYINg CLUBShannon Model Flying club was founded over thirty years ago and first started flying at the Limerick Flying Club at Coonagh. In the late seventies the club moved to its present site at Shannon and is situated about three miles from Shannon Airport. We presently have over fifty members and all aspects of model building and flying is enjoyed by the members. The flying field is about two acres in size and has a long runway almost two hundred feet long and thirty feet wide. Surrounding the runway are secondary areas which are cut short and offer an off-the-mark landing area. The southeast corner of the field is taken up by an area suitable for helicopters or control line flying. On almost every Sunday flying will take place, and during the summer flying will also take place during the week after working hours mostly on Tuesdays and Fridays.Competitions are regularly held throughout the year.If you are interested in joining the club you are invited to drop down any Sunday for a chat and to see some models flying or see www.smfc.org

YOUtH ExCHANgE PLANS FOR 2009This summer 20 young people will come together in Corofin Youth Hostel to work on a youth exchange between Clare Youth Service and its partner, the Omagh Youth Centre in Co. Tyrone. Last year 10 members of Skyview Youth Club in Shannon visited Omagh Youth Centre and stayed in the Ulster Folk Park for 5 days and got to know 10 young people from the towns of Omagh and Fintona. The group had a marvellous experience and made many good friends. This year it is the turn of the Shannon group to host the return leg of the Causeway British-Irish Youth Exchange program and this will take place from June 28th to July 3rd. Ten young people from Shannon and ten from Omagh will once again meet to work together on the themes of Drug and Alcohol Misuse and Youth Health issues over the course of the 5 day exchange. The exchange is funded by Leargas the Exchange Bureau and fundraising by both groups in their local communities. An advanced planning visit took place recently when Youth Worker Julie Donnaghy from Omagh Youth Centre met with Shannon Youth Worker Cathal Dillon and Trish Flynn of Clare Youth Service to finalise accommodation details and meet with those who will be facilitating workshops during the exchange.

“The exchange is looking really good from what Cathal and Trish have shown me and from the preparation that has gone into organising the five days of events. I think that it will be a wonderful experience for both groups.” commented Julie. Cathal feels that youth exchanges are a great way for young people to see other places and make friends all over the world.

“Taking part in a youth exchange is something every young person should be given the opportunity to do. They give young people the chance to experience different cultures and meet people from all walks of life, its something that will stay with a person forever and can leave people with wonderful friends for life”.For more information contact

SHANNON BOWLS CLUBThe use it or lose it principal applies to many sports facilities, and is of particular concern to Shannon Bowls Club. We are one of the few Indoor Bowls Clubs in County Clare but in recent times the number of regular players has dwindled. The club needs to have at least ten members so that we can remain affiliated to the Cork Region of the Irish Indoor Bowling Association.Currently we meet at St. Tolas National School, 7.30 to 9.00pm on Wednesday evenings. We have two mats which can each accommodate a maximum of 8 players but currently are only using one mat. The game played in Shannon is the ‘short mat’ version of indoor bowls following the rules of the IIBA. Shannon is affiliated to the IIBA Cork Zone. Clubs with sufficient interested members compete with other clubs in the zone and there is a league which holds National Championships in Belfast.Adults of all ages are welcome to come and learn the game. Footwear with flat soles without heels are required to protect the mats; carpet slippers or plimsolls are OK.Come and join us on a Wednesday evening, or ring Rolande Hall on tel 086-8281141 for more details.

R e n o w n e d actor Brendan Gleeson was in Ballyvaughan to launch details of the 2009 Clare Burren Marathon C h a l l e n g e ,

which takes place on Saturday 23rd May. Having got the inaugural marathon last May off to a great start, Brendan continues his association with the event and is planning to make time in his busy work schedule to take part this year. The challenge offer’s a choice of three marathons, a Full 26.2 mile marathon, a Half 13.1 mile marathon and a Mini 6-mile marathon. The event caters for all levels of ability and participants are welcome to walk, jog or run the challenge of their choice. Do it for fun, for charity, or to experience this very special place. The challenge will take them across one of Europe’s most unique landscapes, while enjoying the riches, flora and fauna of the Burren. Gerry Reidy, Marathon Manager, believes this presents the ideal opportunity to promote the Burren region and for participants to challenge themselves to take part in a marathon that has focus on participation and personal achievement.Last year the marathon attracted over 1500 people to the area and this year it is anticipated that the numbers will be significantly increased, as the Ballyvaughan/Fanore Walking Club hosts one of the biggest events in the Clare sporting calendar. Building on the success of last years event, the organisers are delighted that once again

cathal maccormaic, local fireman, window cleaner and rugby fanatic, has lived in shannon all his life. he is married to shirley who he met in the Knights! and has three children, Jamie(15), chloe(12) and crona(9). the life of a shannon fireman can be very unpredictable as they are all part-time and constantly on call, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I get up around 7.30 or 8.00 and get the kids ready for school, make b r e a k f a s t , lunches, etc. When they have gone I sit down and read the paper, sports pages first; e s p e c i a l l y if there has

been a big rugby match, and then the rest of the news. I then take the dogs for a walk; we have four dogs, Denali, Juneau (both Northern Inuit dogs), Sitka (Spitz cross) and Neala (German Shepherd), who are all fairly big and need lots of exercise. They keep me fit too! My wife loves dogs, she is involved in MIDS (Members of Irish Dogs Society) and she works from home as a marketing agent for Irishdogs.com.After walking the dogs I go out on my window cleaning round. I have a regular round which takes me 2-3 hours a day and I also do some work as a handy man around the local area. It is very difficult for us (the local firemen) to have full time jobs as we could get called out anytime. Most of us work for ourselves in a variety of jobs, ie. gardener, dog groomer, construction, etc. We have to have our bleepers with us at all times. There 12 of us altogether and whenever there is call out, we all get bleeped. The first 6 to get there go to the call out. If we need two tenders, the rest will follow on. If it is a Road

Traffic Accident or an Airport call then we will need three tenders in which case 4 of us will go in the second tender and two in the third. The three tenders all have different uses. Alpha 1 is the main tender. It is a Pump, which means it has water and ladders on board, it also has cutting equipment for crashes and first aid equipment. We have four tenders altogether. We have 2 Pumps, an emergency tender, which would be taken out for chemical incidents or road traffic accidents, (it also has line rescue equipment) and we also have an Hydraulic Platform, which is necessary if there are fires or rescues from flats or high buildings. We also have a jeep which would be used if there is an accident in a remote area which is inaccessible for the tenders. The firestation is being extended as it was just a three bay station and we now have four tenders. In addition to the three extra fire bays, we are getting new accommodation facilities and a drill yard. The station’s lecture room, toilets, showers and Drying and Breathing Apparatus Equipment rooms are being upgraded. The extension should be finished in April or May.When I have finished my window cleaning round for the day around 2 o’clock, I go home and have lunch, by which time the kids are starting to arrive home from school. The afternoons are taken up with homework, cooking the dinner, (I do most of the cooking in our house as it is something I enjoy), after school activities for the kids, etc. The main problem with being a part-time Fireman as opposed to full time is that we are constantly on call. We have to live and work in a 1½ mile radius of the Station. If we want to leave Shannon for any reason we have to get permission. If we want to go out in the evening and have a couple of drinks, we have to get permission. There has to be at least 8 of the 12 of us around in case we get a call. I have been in the Fire Service for 12 years and I am used to it now now but the discipline of not being able to leave the locality was very hard to begin with. I don’t see the job in Shannon ever becoming full time in my life time as there would need to be about 1,000 calls a year for it to be viable and at the moment in Shannon we get about 270 - 280 calls per year, on average. 061 361777

ATLANTIC AIRVENTUREAVIATION EDUCATION-FLIGHT SIMULATION

www.atlanticairventure.com061 363687/087 2047487

Atlantic AirVenture in Shannon is a new exciting place for adults and kids to learn more about aviation. What better place than Shannon, a place rich in aviation history, to establish Irelands only Aviation Education and Flight Simulation Centre.Atlantic AirVenture opened its doors to the public last July with the first ACE Aviation Camp for kids, with great success. Over the summer 70 children from the Clare and Limerick region had the opportunity to learn how aircraft fly, talk to Pilots, learn how to plot a flight plan and then fly the route in a Flight Simulator as part of a pilot and co pilot team. ACE Summer Camp 09 running in July and August is booking now and is suitable for kids of 7 and upwards. Forms are available on the website.

Other Education programmes include Scouts Air Activities Badges. Troops from Shannon, Killaloe and Sixmilebridge are well underway to earning their wings!

Special occasions like Confirmations, Communions and Birthdays can be booked at the Flight Simulation Centre also.A major addition to the Flight Simulation Centre is the only Boeing 737NG Flight simulator in Ireland accessible to the general public. This fixed base flight trainer is utilised for pilot training, but can be booked on a Gift Voucher basis for that

special birthday or occasion, a gift that’s sure to be totally unique!Explore our website www.atlanticairventure.com and prepare to ‘take off’!

Before becoming a fireman I worked in DefCon for about 9 years on quality control, after doing a chemistry degree in what is now LIT.Two evenings a week I coach rugby at St Senans Rugby Club. I grew up playing hurling but got into rugby in my 20’s and I am a big fan now. I was very lucky to go to Cardiff in March to watch Ireland win the Grand Slam.Every Monday evening from 7 - 9 pm we have training. We do different training every week, in a rota. We have ladder drills, pump drills, RTA (Road Traffic Accidents) practices, line rescue (this is basically rescue from height using abseiling techniques can be used on masts, cliffs and hills and also for confined spaces such as underground tunnels and grain silos, etc), first responder level first aid (this is just below the level needed to be a paramedic), and breathing apparatus equipment training, etc. We also have to do other longer training courses on a regular basis.Of course, any of this daily routine can be disrupted, and often is, by a call out, which can happen any time of the day or night. One third to one half of our calls are at night. We get a lot of small house fires and about 1/3 to 1/2 of the calls are RTA’s. Its very hard to put an average time on a call-out but I suppose if it did go over an hour it would be a more serious incident. Of all the various incidents that I have been involved in over the last 12 years the one that stands out in my mind is the day that Drumgeely Hall was burned down. It was very sad to see such an iconic building in Shannon’s history gone.I usually go to bed at about 11.30 and hope that I get a good nights sleep with no call outs.

FLEADH NUA - ENNISMay 17th - 25th 2009

Today there are many Irishtraditional festivals organised throughout the Summer months but there are few people who will

dispute that Fleadh Nua, which started in Dublin in 1970, is the forerunner of them all. The concept of bringing together concerts, céilithe, music, song and dancing workshops, street entertainment, pageants/parades and much more was innovative in its time. However, it’s still a winning formula today as evidenced by the thousands of visitors who flock to the festival every May for a week of unsurpassed traditional entertainment. Fleadh Nua moved to Ennis, County Clare in 1974 where it has remained to this day. The programme for Fleadh Nua will include concerts, sessions, street & gig rig entertainment, Irish language classes, Pléaracha, Scoraíocht and set-dancing competitions, story telling, céilithe, Singers Club and more. It thus manages to cater for the tastes of the majority of the 50,000 or so patrons

who attend the Fleadh each year. For more information contact 065 682 4276 or 086 826 0300 or email: [email protected].

There are very few people who have not been touched by the incredible work and care given in Milford Hospice and as they have to provide their own funding it would be a first for both leagues to work together to provide what could be a considerable amount of money. Individual clubs have in the past run events to support Milford/Caheracalla but a collective effort would be far more beneficial and rewarding. On the evening of the race there will be entertainment by Johnny Fean and his brother Donal, and they will be joined by a number of top class musicians from Dublin. The venue will be the Shannon Knights Inn and the Knights will also provide water, tea and coffee etc for the runners on the day. There will also be a raffle on the night and some very good prizes are guaranteed. Tickets will be on sale for €5 and will be on sale on the night. There is a web site set up, www.midwest10k.com, with further info and the route will also be posted on it.
