    Welcome | 1

Dear Friends,Reading through our Winter/Spring catalog was one of

those delightful Shambhala Mountain Center moments.

There are so many programs that are personally inspiring, and I kept checking my calendar to see how many I

might be able to take. There is such a display of wisdom,

engagement and depth, and over and over I was given

the opportunity to experience the sense of gratitude for

our land and the amazing role it plays in so many peoples

lives presenters, retreat participants and staff.

Recognizing the need in our world for the wisdom held

and shared in our offerings, we have established new

policies designed to help more people come home to

themselves and to the natural beauty of our shared land.

In addition to the 15% coupon offered in this catalog for

our winter and spring programming, we have expanded

our generosity policy to include all of our programs. We

also want Shambhala Mountain Center to be a place

where you can simply come for a weekend to practice,

wander the land and visit the Stupa at your own pace

and are offering 25% off of our lodging prices in a new

Getaway option. And, beginning in March, we willbe hosting an open house on the first Sunday of every

month. All of us here at Shambhala Mountain Center

extend a warm invitation, and look forward to welcoming

    you home.

    With love from the mountains,

    Michael Gayner, Executive Director

ShambhalaShambhala Mountain Center offers regularly scheduled programs for people

who are new to meditation, as well as those who have a developed personal

practice. Shambhala teachings recognize that human wisdom and basic

goodness do not belong to any one religion or doctrine. Shambhala welcomes

people of all religious traditions, as well as those who do not follow a particular

    spiritual path.

The Shambhala Training Heart of Warriorship program (Levels I-V) introduces

teachings that cultivate genuineness, confidence, humor, and dignity in daily life.

Each program includes meditation instruction and practice, talks on Shambhala

teachings, group discussions, and individual meetings with a teacher. Descriptions

and details for programs that have prerequisites can be found on our website.

The Way of Shambhala is a series of five contemplative workshops that provide

an experiential overview of meditation practice, wisdom teachings, contemplative

arts, and physical disciplines rooted in the ancient traditions of Shambhala and

Tibetan Buddhism. For additional program details, see our website.

The Sacred Path program introduces further practices to develop warriorship

and extend the students training in meditation. These practices are based on a

societal vision and aspiration to help the world.

The Great StupaRising among wooded hillsides, The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya crowns a meadow at the

upper end of Shambhala Mountain Centers main valley. Standing 108 feet tall, it is one of

the most significant examples of sacred Buddhist architecture in North America. Built as amemorial to the Centers founder, the Great Stupa serves as an inspiration for peace and

    compassion throughout the world.

Intended to stop viewers in their tracks, The Great Stupa enables lay people of all

traditions to connect with the Buddhadharma. It serves as a reminder that each of us,

while living, holds basic goodness and the seed of enlightenment within. Stupas are

believed to bestow blessings upon the surrounding environment, and upon those who visit

    and venerate them.

The Great Stupa is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for visitation, contemplation and

circumambulation. The Stupa Visitors Center offers a 25-minute video. Public toursare available on selected dates. Specialized group tours can be arranged. For more

    David Loy

    Buddhism teaches that the

    lack. When we dont understand

    the source of this discomfort,

    we often become preoccupied

Such obsessions also revealwhere our society is collectively

stuck. In this retreat, we will

    Learn to Meditate

Many of us are slaves to our minds. We try to focus,

and our mind wanders off. We try to keep stress atbay, but anxiety keeps us awake at night. We try to be

good to the people we love, but then we forget them

and put ourselves first. And when we want to change

our life, we dive into spiritual practice and expect

quick results, only to lose focus after the honeymoon

has worn off. We return to our state of bewilderment.

Were left feeling helpless and discouraged. It seems

we all agree that training the body through exercise,

diet, and relaxation is a good idea, but why dont

we think about training our minds? Meditation

practice allows us to find peace within ourselves while

    developing a strong, flexible mind.

Our Learn to Meditate retreats offer accessible

meditation practice techniques as well as a

perspective on how they work. We will draw from

Turning the Mind Into an Ally, the best-selling book

    Learn to Meditate

    Patricia Kelly

Many of us are slaves to our minds. We try to focus, and our mind wanders off. We try to keep stress at

bay, but anxiety keeps us awake at night.

It seems

we all agree that training the body through exercise, diet, and relaxation is a good idea, but why dont

we think about training our minds? Meditation

practice allows us to find peace within ourselves while

    developing a strong, flexible mind.

Our Learn to Meditate retreats offer accessible

meditation practice techniques as well as a

perspective on how they work. We will draw from

Turning the Mind Into an Ally, the best-selling book

by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche as we explore thisquestion together in a contemplative environment.

You will receive a copy of this book at the retreat.

    Confusion Arising as Wisdom

    Ringu Tulku Rinpoche

In this special weekend, Ringu Tulku will teachon his new book, Confusion Arises as Wisdom,

a commentary on Gampopas Great Teachings

to the Assembly. How could confusion arise as

wisdom? According to the Mahamudra view,

confusion arises as wisdom when we realize

that everything we experience is the radiance

of the minds own nature. What is the nature of

our mind? How do we come to recognize that?

Gampopa shows his students and now us the path of deep understanding and meditation

that leads to the realization of Mahamudra, the

Great Seal of the true nature of reality.

    Tuition $195 + 2 nights

    BODY AWARENESS

    Free Your Energy

    Jeanie Manchester & Billy Goldman

In this retreat we will refine and deepen ourunderstanding of the practice by utilizing the

breath, the steadying of the gaze, and proper body

alignment. The practice will serve as a place to listen

and become more aware of our superficial mind and

our habitual patterns. As these habitual patterns

arise within the container of the practice there is the

opportunity to see them for what they are-concepts/

    ideas.

As one is successful in this endeavor the energy thatwas previously deployed in identifying with these

ideas is released which results in greater freedom and

energy. Not only do we experience greater joy but we

begin to respond, versus reacting, to our challenges.

Through daily asana, pranayama, meditation and

contemplation we will come to understand better

how we can free up the vital life force that is

essential for living a vibrant and healthy life.

At the core of the dzogchen teachings is theview that all sentient beings are primordially
