    CHAYA SARAHGenesis 23:1–25:18

Sarah dies at age 127 and is buried in the Machpelah Cave

in Hebron, which Abraham purchases from Ephron the

Hittite for four hundred shekels of silver.

Abraham’s servant Eliezer is sent, laden with gifts, to Charan,

to find a wife for Isaac. At the village well, Eliezer asks G-d

for a sign: when the maidens come to the well, he will ask

for some water to drink; the woman who will offer to give

his camels to drink as well shall be the one destined for his

    master’s son.

Rebecca, the daughter of Abraham’s nephew Bethuel,

appears at the well and passes the “test.” Eliezer is invited

to their home, where he repeats the story of the day’s

events. Rebecca returns with Eliezer to the land of Canaan,

where they encounter Isaac praying in the field. Isaac

marries Rebecca, loves her, and is comforted over the loss

    of his mother.

Abraham takes a new wife, Keturah (Hagar), and fathers

six additional sons, but Isaac is designated as his only heir.

Abraham dies at age 175 and is buried beside Sarah by his

two eldest sons, Isaac and Ishmael.

CONGREGATION KNESETH ISRAEL PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETINGThursday, November 7, 2019

In attendance: Shirley Aronson, Larry Block, Glenn Carr, Mark Goldberg, Robert Goldstein, and Anna Greenberg

The committee began the meeting by sharing their

feedback of the recent special town hall meeting that

took place on Sunday, October 20th. While it was not

well attended, we learned that people are accepting of

changing the religious identity of the synagogue if it

    means survival.

The hiring of a new rabbi was discussed. It was noted that

we have financial limitations, and an approximate cost of

hiring a rabbi would be at least $125,000. Alan Hyatt of

Severn Bank was approached about a loan, but there must

be collateral and only certain people could sign a loan

    agreement.

Before seeking a new rabbi, we should assure that we can

pay him, have a religious identity, and define the goals and

    expectations from him.

A point was made to document what went wrong in the

past. A discussion of our mistakes in the past that led us to

the situation took place, and it is very unlikely that this will

ever happen again. There must be board transparency in

    the future.

A discussion took place about the Jewish Community Lega-

cy Project, founded by Home Depot Chairman of the Board

Bernie Marcus in Atlanta. Their mission is focused exclusively

on small-town Jewish communities and their survival and fu-

ture. Larry Block spoke with Noah Levine from this organiza-

tion. It was suggested that a special meeting of the Board

of Governors, the Planning Committee, and Mr. Levine take

place. Those attending this meeting were unanimously in

    favor of taking this action.

There was a discussion of a congregation vote for our reli-

gious affiliation. This is one of the requirements before we

consider hiring a new rabbi. The committee discussed the

choices that should be on the ballot. Three choices were

identified - -stay the same (traditional), Conservative, or

Egalitarian. The definitions of Conservative and Egalitarian

should be provided on the ballot. Voting can take place

at the annual Congregation Meeting in January. Members

that can’t attend will be strongly encouraged to submit an

    absentee ballot.

Rabbi Elson was identified as someone who could refer a

rabbinic candidate when the time comes. Gary Rosenblatt

was contacted, but has not followed up.
