Into its second year running, the award recognizes environmentally-friendly hotels which have taken significant strides in adopting green practices. Winning hotels were deemed to have performed exceptionally well in the areas of solid waste management, energy efficiency, water efficiency, air quality management as well as toxic and chemical substance disposal. 1 Furama City Centre Singapore 2 Furama RiverFront, Singapore 3 Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel Singapore 4 Grand Hyatt Singapore 5 Holiday Inn Atrium Singapore 6 Holiday Inn Singapore Orchard City Centre 7 M Hotel Singapore 8 Mandarin Orchard Singapore 9 The Regent Singapore 10 Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore A toast to our following SHA hotel members, in alphabetical order, for upholding the green spirit: Separately, another 71 ASEAN hotels from the other ASEAN Member Countries namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam also received the award for their outstanding green efforts. The ASEAN Green Hotel Standard, as part of the ASEAN Tourism Standards, was established in 2007 with a total of 11 criteria and 25 requirements. Against the backdrop of climatic concerns and global warming issues, ASEAN hotels were encouraged to drive the green campaign to protect the environment and to enhance the attractiveness of ASEAN as an ecotourism destination.

Your Say : Building an Age-friendly With an increasingly greying population, a lot of emphasis has been placed on healthy ageing and lifelong employability at the workplace.

For this issue, members were asked on what their hotel has done in facilitating an age-friendly environment for the mature workers.

CopthorneKing’sHotelhasa totalwork forceofabout200employees.47%ofourwork force is50yearsoldandabove.ThisgroupofmatureemployeesiswithdifferentdepartmentsoftheHotelnamelyHousekeeping,FrontOffice,Engineering,SecurityandFoodandBeverageOperations.

Ourattemptsincreatinganage-friendlyenvironmentareasfollows:

1) Staffdialoguesessionsareheldregularlytoraiseawarenessamongallstafftobetterunderstandtheneedsofadiversifiedagegroupofemployees.

2) Provisionofcomprehensiveinsurancecoverageuptill70yearsold.

3) Presentationoflongserviceawardstosenioremployeesduringannualdinnersinappreciationoftheircommitment.

4) ArrangementsoflightdutiesorfunctionsformatureworkerssuchasansweringofphonecallsintheHousekeepingDepartmentandtakingreservationsinFoodandBeverageoutlets.

5) ImplementationofaBuddysystemformatureworkers.Someofourstaffareassignedtoassisttheoldertechnicianworkersinmaintenancejobsthatcanbestrenuousforthisgroupofolderworkers.

GoodwoodParkHotelisfullycommittedtoprovidinganage-friendlyenvironmentforourmatureworkers.

Someofourinitiativesareasfollows:

1) Wehavefullyinstalled311unitsofEzi-MaidinJune2011.Thisisabedliftingsystemthatlightenstheworkflowandfacilitatesretentionandre-employmentofolderworkers.

2) InFebruary2011,61ofourmatureworkers(age50yearsandabove)attendedthe“READY”Programme.Thisisaprogrammespeciallydesignedtohelpmatureworkerstounderstandthebenefitsofremaininginemployment.

3) Implementationofimprovedre-employmenttermsandbenefitstofacilitateretentionandre-employmentofmatureworkers.Wealsoofferpart-timeemploymentopportunitiestoourmatureworkersiftheyareunabletocommittoafull-timeworkschedule.

4) ForourseniortechniciansinMaintenance,weallowthemtoworkduringthedayshiftinsteadofa24hourshift.

5) Matureworkersarealsoexemptedfromdoingstrenuousworkorcarryingheavyitems.

Ourhotelvaluesthecontributionsfromourmatureworkers.Improvingtheworkenvironmenttocatertothespecificneedsoftheseolderstaffwillalwaysbeoneofourtoppriorities.

Crowne Plaza Changi Airport has always been committed to creating an age-friendly and highly conducive workenvironmentforourmatureworkers.

1) OneinitiativeistheinstallationoftheEzi-MaidBedLiftingSysteminallguestroomssincethehotelopenedin2008.Thesteelframedsystem,allowsroomattendantstoraisethebedstowaist-heightbyusingaremotecontrol.Thishelpsinreducingworkplaceinjuries.

2) WhiletheRe-employmentActmayhavejusttakeneffectonJanuary1,2012,weareanearlyadopteroftheActandhavebeenprovidingre-employmenttoemployeesreachingtheageof62since2009.

Asresponsibleemployers,werecognizethecontributionsofourmaturestafftothehotel.OntopofadoptingtheRe-employmentAct,wedonotreducetheirsalariesby10%whentheyreachtheageof60.Theiremploymenttermsandconditionsremainunchangedevenastheyreachtheageof62.Wemakeadjustmentstothejobstosuittheneedsofthematureworkersandalso,extendre-employmentopportunitiestotheolderworkers.

3) WehaveembracedWDArecommendationsandestablishedgoodre-employmentpracticessuchasprovidingPre-RetirementPlanningandRe-EmploymentConsultationforourstaff.

Whenouremployeesreachtheageof60,wepreparethemfortheirgoldenyearsandintroducetheideaofre-employmentthroughPre-RetirementPlanning.Weadvisethemontheiremployabilityandassesstheirtrainingneeds.

Re-Employmentconsultationisthenprovidedsixmonthsbeforeouremployeesreachtheageof62.Wedeterminetheirre-employmenteligibilityandcommunicateremunerationandre-deploymentoptions.Wealsotakealookatavailablejoboptionswithinthehotelwhichbestfitstheirneedsandexpectations.

Foremployeeswhoare ineligible for re-employment,weprovideemploymentassistanceto theemployeewithaone-offEmploymentAssistancePayment(EAP).

AtPARKROYALonBeachRoad,weaimtonotonlycreateamemorablehotelexperienceforourguests,butalsotocreateanexcellentandrewardingworkenvironmentforouremployees.

Currentlywehave16workersagedbetween62and70yearsoldworkingwithus.Allofthemhaveworkedformorethan30yearswiththehotel.

1) Weworkverycloselywiththegovernmentandunionsonthehiringofmatureworkersandre-employmentofretirees.Wewereawardedwithsomefundsunder theAdvantageScheme in theperiodof2008to2009.Togetherwith theunions,weadoptedthetripartiterecommendationofpreparingretireeswellinadvancebeforetheirretirementageof62andre-employingthemuptotheageof65orlonger.

2) We adopted new technology such as the motorized trolley Pro-Host, to assist mature workers working in theHousekeepingdepartmentinthecollectionofsoiledlinensandtowels.Wehavealsostarteda“buddysystem”whereyoungerinternsareassignedtoassistolderworkersinHousekeepingchores.

3) Wehaveinplacearewardprogramthatgivesrecognitiontoemployeeswhohavededicatedtheirloyaltytothehotelfor50years.

4) WeembarkedonseveralWorkplaceHealthprogramsthatearnedthehoteltheSingaporeHealthAwardsinboth2008and2010.Theseprograms which included healthy food intake, medical check-up, fitness program and recreational activities help to keep the senioremployeeshealthy.

5) Wealsopracticetheuseofsimpleanduncomplicatedlanguagewithourmatureworkerstofacilitateeffectivecommunication.

Since the formation of Singapore Junior Chefs Club in2004, JasperJekhasworkedextensivelywith theclub’svisionofnurturingfuturetalents,holdingvariouspositionsin its Executive Committee before helming the club asPresident from 2006 to 2011. Under his presidency, theclub spearheaded many activities and was also named“BestTrainingProvider” inWAOceanaFestCompetitioninPerth,Australiaand“AwardofExcellence”byUnileverFoodSolutions.

Jasper also started the Singapore Junior Culinary Teamto trainyoungchefs formajoroverseasand internationalcompetitions under the tutelage of seasoned veteransfromtheSingaporeChefs’Association.Today,otherthanworkingaschefdepartieinJoëlRobuchonRestaurantatResortsWorldSentosainSingapore,Jasperalsoservesinthesub-committeeoftheSingaporeChefs’Association.

Jasper has represented Singapore in numerous WACSevents, including the WACS Asia-Pacific Forum in KualaLumpur in 2007, WACS Asia Pacific Africa Forum inSingaporein2008,WACSCongressinDubaiin2008andtheWACSAsiaForuminDaejeonin2010.

In the month of February 2012, two industry talks werecarried out by Resorts World Sentosa and SingaporeMarriottHotel.

January 2012 in Prague, Czech Republic. She competedagainst candidates from Estonia, Austria, France, CzechRepublic, Spain, Italy, New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany,United Kingdom, Indonesia and Dubai and came in as firstrunner-up,losingbyatinymargintoOlgaVelcevafromDubai.

Heldeachyearbythe“AmicaleInternationaledesSousDirecteurset Chefs de Réception des Grand Hôtels (AICR)” or “TheInternational Association of Deputy Managers and Front OfficeManagersofLuxuryHotels”,theannualcompetitionwaslaunchedin 1995 with the main objective of being a training tool for theyoungergeneration.Eachcandidateisrequiredtoundertakeanin-depthinterviewwithapaneloffivejudges,aswellasachallengingroleplaywithascenariothatwilltesteachcandidate’sknowledge,skillsandpersonality.

In linewith thetheme,hotelsalsocarriedoutdiningpromotions to reward their guestsfor takingpart in thisenvironmentalcause. Recipes that were preparedusingnaturalingredientsandenergy-efficientcookingwerealsopresentedtoguests.

IDA initiated a call-for-collaboration on mobility solution inJune 2011, which was supported by Singapore TourismBoard (STB), SPRING Singapore, and Employability andEmploymentInstitute(e2i).

From the 46 proposals received, 33 hotels responded withinterest to embark on mobility solutions in various areas thatwillenhancecustomerservice,improveinternaloperations,andincreaseworkproductivity.

Most of the hotels were interested in improving their F&Brestaurant operations, by adopting wireless menu orderingsolutionsthatwouldallowservicestafftotakeorderswithtabletsandhandhelddevices.Othersolutionsthatwereofinteresttohotelsinclude:

- Point-of-sales(POS)- Propertymanagementsystems(PMS)- Mobileconciergesolutions- RoomIPTVsystem.

Suchsolutionsaimtostreamlinethehoteloperations, therebyprovidingthehotelguestswithapleasantexperience.

InadditiontothemobilitysolutionsforCall-for-Collaboration(CFC), IDA has been supporting the adoption of IT in thehospitalitysectorthroughinitiativessuchasDigitalConcierge

Singapore Hotels going Mobileand Next-Generation e-Payment programmes all of whichcomplements the hoteliers’ mobile capabilities. HotelierscanthereforeleveragethemobileapplicationbuildingblocksdevelopedundertheDigitalConciergeprogrammetoextendorenhancetheirmobilepresenceandguestengagement.TheDigital Concierge programme, on the other hand can allowhotelierstoengagetheirguestsviaMobileWebsites,therebyproviding them with an integrated mobile experience suchas remote payment, taxi booking and reservation of diningoutlets.

ByparticipatingintheNext-Generatione-PaymentprogrammeandPoints-of-sales (e.g. restaurants,bars,spas),hotelswillbeabletoacceptcontactlesspaymentsusingthelatestNearField Communication (NFC) technology. IDA can providesupport to hoteliers in their adoption of next generation e-paymentsolutions.
