Shoppers Guide March 1 & 2, 2014 Volume 43, Number 17 Weekend Edition A free publication of the Bedford Gazette distributed throughout Bedford County and southern Blair County Bedford/Blair County By Elizabeth Coyle Gazette Associate Editor IMLERTOWN— It’s the burial ground of the woman known as Indian Eve. One of its chief neighborhoods was the location of an iron mine, and Dutch Corner once used to be dissected by railroad tracks. The Dutch Corner History Group has been highlighting the rich heritage of this most- ly farming community since it formed in 2009, but for its work to restore cemeteries and research the old school- houses, the group has been named Historians of the Year. “Surprised and shocked,” co-president Carl Sellers said of his reaction. “I think it’s pretty cool,” co- president Frank Antonson added. “I think they’re deserving.” The Bedford County His- torical Society will honor the group at the society’s annual banquet March 29. The Dutch Corner group was born out of another group that wanted to gain historic designation for the area to ward off wind turbine development. Sellers said the historic group wanted to stay away from politics and highlight the many historic features of the area which the group con- siders to be about seven square miles of Bedford Township. Antonson said the rural area drew him back from the upper echelons of academia. A Harvard graduate, he decided to return to Bedford Township, become a teacher and settle at the farm his grandfather bought in the 1940s. The residents of Dutch Cor- ner are unique, he said. “There’s always been a differ- ence between Dutch Corner and the town of Bedford.” The people who live in Dutch Corner “have an identity of their own,” Antonson said. Predominantly, the settlers weren’t Dutch, they were German, Antonson said. One of the first settlers was George Michael Imler Jr., born in Germany in 1705, according to the group’s infor- mation. Church records were written in German through the 1800s, Antonson noted. The group is developing a tour of the area that will highlight the area’s 14 school- houses and quarries, or their locations, as well as locations of the railroad, cemeteries, the Triplett Mill and other points of interest. It also has a website. Sellers said the photo book of the area’s school houses took about 200 hours of work. The organization originally was to sell 50 copies but had to reprint the volume which now has sold 200 copies and counting. Nancy Hinson, member of the group, said her family tree has roots in the area that stem back to the 1700s. Preservation is important to her, she said, “because my history is in Dutch Corner.” —Continued on Page 7 Dutch Corner group earns Historians of Year honors Monday thru Friday 9 am - 6 pm Saturday 9 am - 12 noon Closed Sunday 121 East Penn Street, Bedford (814) 623-8622 OFFICES IN BEDFORD & ALTOONA Visit www.johnstonrealty.com #1 Real Estate Company In Pennsylvania 3581 Milligans Cove Road, Manns Choice $450,000 This picturesque property offers 130 peaceful acres.
