We have much to celebrate when it comes to our studentsreading progress. In fact, nearly half of our student population is already reading at or beyond their end of the year expected guided reading level for their grade level. The instructional staff members have enjoyed challenging and supporting all kids to reach their next levels. When it comes to reading, fluency and comprehension are major areas of focus. A child reading with fluency sounds as if they are having a conversation with a friend. The words flow fluidly and naturally. This fluency allows students to focus their efforts on reading comprehension instead of just decoding words. Simply put, reading comprehension is the act of understanding what you are reading. Comprehension involves thinking about the story before reading, during reading, and after reading. One strategy to help your child with reading comprehension includes teaching them how to use their Thinking Voice.Good readers create images/movies in their heads while they are reading. While you are reading to your child, think out loud about the images you see, the predictions you make, or questions that arise. This means you should explain all of the ideas and thoughts that go through your mind as you read. Here is an example of how to think out loud while you are reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle: Reading Voice: He built a small house, called a cocoon, around himself. Thinking Voice: I have seen a cocoon in our backyard. Do you remember seeing that? I have a connection to this book! Reading Voice: He stayed inside for more than two weeks. Then he nibbled a hole in the cocoon, pushed his way out, andThinking Voice: I have read a book about caterpillars before. They turn into butterflies! I predict he will turn into a butterfly. Lets keep reading and find out. It is impossible to overestimate the impact parents have on their childs reading success. Learning to read takes practice, practice, and more practice. Reading at home with your child every day will help your child develop into a better reader. Equally important, it will help foster a love for reading. Sincerely, Dr. Davin E. PROCEDURE TO REPORT A STUDENT ABSENCE—A parent/guardian is to call the school to report a school absence ON THE DAY OF THE ABSENCE. You may leave a VOICE MAIL message at 885-5246. Press 1, and answer the questions, pressing the # button after each response. Voicemail is available 24 hours a day to report an absence. Calls prior to 8:00 am are encouraged and appreciated. If a call hasn’t been received by 10:00am the day of each absence, a School Messenger reminder notification will be delivered by telephone. A call is needed EACH DAY a student is absent. Your child should remain home if they have diarrhea, vomiting or an elevated temperature of 100 or

above. Students may return to school once they have been diarrhea free, vomiting free, and fever

free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications.
