“Making the invisible visible”… - Musicians should adopt a higher awareness of their reality. - A Plan for the Prevention on Occupational Hazards, conducted with union participation, is imperative in all the orchestras. - Companies, managers, administrators and conductors should integrate prevention on occupational risks in the daily management of enterprises.




“Making the invisible visible”

- Prevention services should offer:

- specific health surveillance.

- specialized diagnosis.

- Mutuals must:

- Find possible cases of occupational disease.

- advise on health and preventive measures.

- The Code of Practice setting out practical guidance for compliance with Royal Decree 286/2006 in the music sector (Spain) has to be a technical reference in the world of music.




Known the working conditions, it's necessary to get involved in:

- The organization of work, cornerstone of all the ills suffered by musicians of symphony orchestras.

- Dystonia. The risk is 50 times higher than in other sectors.

- Musculoskeletal disorders.

- The hearing impairment: hearing loss, hyperacusis, tinnitus,…





- Conduct sonometries in all business as required by law.

- Inclusion of the symphony musician diseases

in the table of occupational diseases.

- Claim of not reported accidents.

- The "tuning up" of the musician, before

and after each performance, allocating resources to it.




- Improvement on the union organization of the musicians.

- Prevention of harm from exposure to noise.

- Improve the conditions of the workplace, usually:

- not suitable to the activity taking place. - don't meet with the rules on Occupational Health and

Safety (space, light, acoustics, resting venues…).





- Negotiate working time, significantly hampering the reconciliation of work and family life.

- Take into account the volume and distribution of harmful repertoires.

- Improve the overall situation of the orchestra musicians, at a clear disadvantage in relation to employees in other sectors.





Goals to achieve in the coming years…

- Raise awareness among musicians of their own problems.

- Analyze audiometries to make appear hearing losses (already recognized by law).

- Create plans for the Prevention of Occupational Risks in orchestras.

- Sensitize the society: this job and its usual working conditions compromise physical and mental health.




- Organize conferences, workshops, seminars, where these issues can be discussed.

- Promote social dialogue as a means for improving risk prevention.

- Participation in the FIM Working Group on Occupational Health and international meetings organized on this topic.

- Develope collaborative networks.

Goals to achieve in the coming years…




- Further researches for the recognition of focal dystonia, the hyperacusis, etc. as musician occupational diseases.

- An information guide: contact of health professionals specialized in musician diseases, both public and private.

- Get the involvement of conductors and orchestra managers to integrate prevention in their work.

- Train teachers and students of music schools in occupational health and prevention issues.

- Set up correction factors to reduce the retirement age.

All this cannot be influenced by the cutbacks affecting the world of culture.

The prevention of occupational hazards of the musicians have to be integrated

into the daily management of the company.
