Among interesting items from the lec-ture of Singleton, President of the GreaterAstoria Historical Society, were that theQueensborough Bridge is a more apt sym-bol for Queens, not the giant globe inFlushing. He noted that the constructionof the bridge essentially created the Queensovernight, as we know it. The MathewFlats, Sunnyside apartments with a ‘win-dow in every room,’ are also often over-looked as the revolutionary constructionproject they were. “There were no fore-closures,” Bob noted. “We could learnfrom that today.”

Crowley Celebrates 70th Anniversary ofSocial Security with Sunnyside Seniors

Thanks to a project of the QueensHealth Coalition (QHC) entitled: Junior-Senior Partnership, 15 young adults metwith 15 older adults to swap informationon communications. For the oldsters’ part, they reminisced about pre-high tech days:no cell phones, no computers, no textmessaging. As one senior recalled: “Inthose days, you looked for a quarter anda pay phone; Google was just a dream andinstantly knowing what your friend wasup to, was unheard of and would bethought of as more information than youneeded to know.” The teens were aghast! To them, a world without immediate com-munications; the need to own a librarycard and not sharing your every thought, every minute seemed, well, primitive.

Most of the older adults did admit thatregardless of the simplicity and charm of“the good old days” they would gladlytake on the trappings of this “new techage” except for one problem: despite

GRANDMA THE “TECHIE”countless gifts of BlackBerrys, PCs andSidekicks from their sons and daughters, few really understand how to work them.

As Phyllis Shafran, Executive Direc-tor of QHC noted: “This is where thegreat value of the Junior-Senior Partner-ship is seen. While the teens welcomedthe stories of surviving time-delayed in-formation and the art of personal commu-nications, the seniors left that day withemail accounts set up, learning to Twitterand how to find the side effects of theirnew medication on Google.”

The next Junior-Senior Partnershipprogram is being planned for mid- March.Participants receive a stipend, aMetroCard and refreshments.

Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) visited with seniors atthe Sunnyside Community Services Se-nior Center yesterday to mark the 70thanniversary of Social Security and talkabout his work in Congress on behalf ofseniors. The first Social Security checkwas sent 70 years ago on January 31, 1940.

“Social Security is one of the mosteffective Federal programs ever created –providing millions of seniors with a secureincome throughout their golden years,”said Congressman Joseph Crowley.“Democrats spearheaded the creation ofSocial Security and, since its inception, wehave been working to improve andstrengthen it. We have modernized itsservices and fought off attempts by Repub-licans to privatize the program. From myseat on the Social Security Subcommittee,I will continue to be a strong advocate forQueens and Bronx seniors and the Social

Security program.”The United States celebrated the 70th

anniversary of the issuance of the firstSocial Security check this year, on January31st, 2010. Social Security was createdduring the Great Depression to provide aguaranteed retirement income for seniorsand widows with dependent children. Ithas lifted millions of seniors from povertyover the decades and continues to providea guaranteed, steady, and stable stream offinancial support to seniors in the USA.On January 31, 1940, Ida May Fuller ofLudlow, VT, received the first monthlyretirement check—in the amount of $22.54.Fuller had worked for three years under theSocial Security program, which had beenestablished by legislation in 1935.

COUNCIL MEMBER JIMMY VAN BRAMERHOLDS MTA’S FEET TO THE FIRE IN TOWN HALL MEETING

Front Nathaniel Torterreli, Thomas Callahan Jr., Fermino Jeffcoat, Daniel Carlson, Jordan Arias,Eric Moy, and Xavier Fernandez. Back Deacon Robert Abundo and VFW Post No. 2813 Sr. ViceCommander Marvin R. Jeffcoat.

Council Member Van Bramer Holds an Emergency Town Hall Meeting Regarding # 7 Subway Line DisruptionsMembers of the community

made themselves heard yester-day by a six member panel ofMTA executives in a lively townhall meeting focusing on ongo-ing number 7 subway line dis-ruptions.

The meeting, held in LongIsland City and sponsored byCouncil Member Jimmy VanBramer, was also attended byAssembly Members CatherineNolan and Michael Gianaris aswell as Chair of CommunityBoard 2, Joe Conley.

With little more than ten daysof notice, the MTA began dis-ruptions on the number 7 sub-way line that would last nineconsecutive weekends. Thesedisruptions completely halt sub-way traffic between QueensboroPlaza and Grand Central Stationleaving many residents in West-ern Queens stranded and crip-pling small businesses and cul-tural organizations.

Three main issues wereraised by Council Member VanBramer: lack of notification fromthe MTA; lack of communityinput; and a deficient shuttle sys-tem. As a result of the pressureput on the MTA by Council

Member Van Bramer, the MTAhas increased the frequency ofshuttle buses from every tenminutes to every five minutes. However, Van Bramer is de-manding that the MTA providedirect shuttle service from theVernon Jackson subway stop toGrand Central Station.

The MTA has also agreed toattempt to minimize the timethat loud tunnel fans are oper-ated in Long Island City whilework is being done in the tun-nels. Residents have complainedthat the fans, which produce aloud drone, keep them awake –at times all night long.

By the end of the town hall, the MTA executives agreed toevaluate the Council Member’sdemands and respond to theneeds of the community. VanBramer promised to keep thepressure on until the issues dis-cussed are resolved.

“I thank the MTA for hear-ing the community’s concerns. But there is a lot more work thatneeds to be done and I lookforward to working with theMTA and the community to im-proving service in the short andlong term.”

Fully Fund Your IRA - All at Once or Throughout the YearMillions of Americans invest in Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) - and with good reason. An IRA is a great way to save

for retirement, and it’s available to anyone with earned income. Yet, many people don’t fully fund their IRAs each year. That couldbe a costly mistake - so do whatever you can to avoid it.

Before we get to the funding issue, let’s examine the key benefits of an IRA:Tax advantages - When you invest in a traditional IRA, your earnings can potentially grow on a tax-deferred basis, which

means your money can grow faster than if it were placed in an investment on which you pay taxes every year. And depending onyour income level, some of your contributions may be tax deductible. If you have a Roth IRA, your contributions aren’t deductible, but your earnings can potentially grow totally tax-free, provided you’ve had your account for at least five years and you don’t starttaking withdrawals until you reach 59-1/2. Wide choice of investments - You can fund your traditional or Roth IRA with just aboutany investment vehicle available, including stocks, bonds, certificates of deposit and Treasury bills. You can even choose aninvestment mix that reflects your long-term goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.

Clearly, it’s a smart move to contribute the full amount to your IRA every year. So, why don’t more people do it?One reason is that many investors may become intimidated by the IRA’s contribution limits. You could invest up to $5,000

to your IRA for the 2009 tax year and for 2010, or $6,000 if you’re 50 or older. These limits can look imposing, especially if you think you have to pay the money all at once - and pay it around tax time.

Of course, if you can afford to fund your IRA all at once, it may be to your advantage to do so, because the earlier in the year youhave your IRA funded, the more time it has to potentially grow. But if you can’t write a check for $5,000 in January, why not dividethe amount into 12 monthly payments of $416.00? That amount may also pose a challenge to your monthly cash flow, but it’sprobably far more manageable than writing that big one-time check.

Making regular investments into your IRA may also offer “strategic” advantages. While your monthly payments can’tguarantee a profit or protect against a loss in a declining market, they may be able to help you overcome some of the volatility ofthe financial markets. How? Suppose your $416.00 monthly IRA investment goes to buy stocks. When stock prices are low, that$416.00 will buy more shares, and when prices are high, it will buy fewer shares. Be sure that you consider your ability to continueinvesting through periods of low price levels.

If you haven’t fully funded your IRA for 2009, you’ve got until the tax-filing deadline, which is April 15, 2010. After that,if you’ve got the money to fund your IRA for 2010, do it as soon as you can, or do it throughout the year. Just get it done. Someday, you may be glad you did. STRENGTH IN

NUMBERSSelling your home in anything other than an active

market can seem challenging, but what do you do whenyours is only one of many homes in your neighborhood withFor Sale signs? Surprisingly, there are actually some ad-vantages to marketing your home in this situation.

More buyers are drawn to neighborhoods where theycan preview more homes at once. (More buyer’s meansmore opportunities for your home to be seen and to attractan offer, so make your listing stand out against yourcompetition.

Price your home aggressively after reviewing the com-parable sales figures that your Realtor will provide. (Don’tgive your neighbors the advantage of looking like a bargaincompared to your listing — take it yourself and showbuyers what a great value you’re offering. (If you’re com-peting against foreclosure listings, having your home in“move-in” condition will help, because foreclosures oftenneed lots of repairs. (

With this much activity in the neighborhood, make surethat your home is available for showing on literally amoment’s notice. (Buyers who come to look at otherlistings may spot yours and want to see it right away to makecomparisons. Be prepared for impulse prospects with goodhousekeeping and an escape plan for unexpected showings.

Finally, don’t worry if your neighbor sells first — thatjust makes for less competition in your market.

of the Woodside Herald.YOUR EYES

byDR. IRVING ROVIN, OPTOMETRIST

CHANGES AS WE AGEYou may have had your eyes tested and diagnosed as

farsighted (see in the distance more easily than nearby objects). At that time you had no problem in reading or seeing thingsclearly because the lens of your eye could change focus easily. That’s one of the advantages of youth. As most people growolder, the lens of the eye loses some of its flexibility. Becauseof this natural change, focusing at close range may becomemore and more difficult.

By the time the average farsighted person is in his forties orearly fifties, he finds he must hold the printed page father andfarther away in order to be able to read it. Eventually, glassesare needed to do the focusing that the lens of your eye is nolonger able to do. This condition is called presbyopia and veryfew people escape it. As the farsighted person gets older, hemay also need glasses for distance viewing, though they willprobably be much weaker than the glasses used for reading.

Dear Editor,I was shocked to encounter ice-

berg lettuce priced at $1.99 in thesupermarket. Iceberg lettuce, of allthings! Unfortunately, it is not justiceberg lettuce. The prices of allgreen vegetables seem to be sky-high this year.

Don’t blame the supermarkets. In California, one item for example,we used to get 3 crops of iceberglettuce per year from the fertilearea near Salinas, California. Butnot this year. This year, some400,00 acres in that area of Cali-fornia are not growing much, thou-sands of farm workers are idle be-cause of no farm work.

Why? Some fish. Environmen-talists in power have prevented thefood growing area from accessingirrigation waters from the Sacra-mento River. The water is flowingstraight out to sea to help somefish. Thus, very little is growing. We suffer high prices because ofthe scarcity.

Frankly, the fish aren’t worthit. Thousands are not working;prices of essential vegetables areridiculous because some powerfulgovernment bureaucrats have de-cided some fish are worth morethan healthy green vegetables.

Government is too intrusive. We need a Tea Party in NorthwestQueens.
