The best that you can do on Tuesday, January 23 at 6pm, when you will be stuck between the moon and NYC, to give them applause and have a good time yourself, is to attend the Luke Adams Sunnysider of the Year XIII “Blue Moon Ball,” presented by the Sunnyside Chamber and Sunnyside Art- ists at Tangra at 40th Street on Queens Boulevard. See ad this issue. Local businessman Tony Tang will be named the Luke Adams Sunnysider of the Year 2018. He will join the Sunnyside- Woodside greats we revere for making our world a better, Luke Adams, Pastor Brian Dowd, Frances Schmidt, Donald McCallian, Oguzhan Turan, Angel Gil Orrios, and An- thony Lana. Lana, due to date change from Jan. 9 to Jan 23, may have to go to Italy for the Gelato Expo (What? Can we go?), but other living recipients are expected. Tang’s modesty, generosity to the commu- nity, warm personality, unfailing courtesy to all, and work ethic have been a 30+-year example of small town success, industry and quiet perseverance. His wife, Leena Tang, has worked by his side for their often 12-hour/7-day schedules. He has owned five businesses, come through a financial loss, all the while funding his and other family members educations. His two UPS Stores were named fastest growing in the region. Tony was born in Bangkok, and his staff caliber is unparalleled. For more bio details, see: Sunnyside-Chamber .org Anthony Lodati of Lowery Liquors is donating a glass of wine for all, and Juan Arache of the Sugar Room is creating a “Blue Moon Cake,” served with ice cream. A DJ will get us on the dance floor, includ- ing some disco, which is a favorite of Tony Tang. There will be live performances, raffle, and a cash bar. Dressy attire with some blue, with raffles, dignitaries, delicious new menu of including American comfort food. New this year will be of five “Queens Impact Awards,“ created by the Chamber for those who are headed for greater recog- nition (in alphabetical order, more detail at sunnyside-chamber.org). Manny Gomez worked as a stock boy Ben’s Meat-o-Mat and moved up to manager, and now works as Medicare insurance sales pro for industry leader. He is president of the Chamber, Sunnyside Artists, on the Queen of Angels Church Parish Council, and former head of Young Adults Magnificat, and like Luke Adams, had to be persuaded to accept an award. She just helped found a chapter of the Girl Scouts for homeless girls, working previously as COO in brand merchandizing for an industry gi- ant. Meredith is an early, middle and will be a late bloomer, too! Ramiro Mendez of DeMole Restaurant is first at many things: first here to be hon- ored by Michelin Guide, the prestigious restaurant recognition, first with vegan en- trees, first here to suggest a Taste event for charity. Ramiro grew up in Puebla, Mexico with a grandfather who raised cattle, and his branding iron is now exhibited at DeMole. He says, “My wife, Mireya, taught me to cook.” Ramiro is about to add a branch in Brooklyn. Melissa Orlando, in her “spare time,” is Executive Director of a group she founded, Access Queens, which sprang from 7 Train Blues, with 2800 members on Facebook, where riders can help each other in real time. She is an American Ballet The- atre certified teacher at Sunnyside Ballet. Melissa serves as officer of the Chamber, and on the board of Sunnyside Artists. Sherilyn Sabba is Editor of the Woodside Herald; a newspaper founded in 1934 by her grandfather, Joseph Sabba, and passed on to her by her father, Buster Sabba after his sudden passing in 2009. While small news- papers were failing all over the country, Sabba, with no journalism background stepped in and kept a local institution going. She donates space to struggling non-profits, and is fearless in her editorial content. She and her husband, Rob, have two children Brody and Brayden. Sabba Park is named after her family.

SWORN FOR 3RD TERM NEW STATE LAWS INEFFECT FOR 2018

As the clock ticked over to 2018on January 1st, several new statelaws took effect to raise the mini-mum wage, provide tax relief formiddle-income families, and pro-vide support for people who needtime off from work to care for newbabies or seriously ill family mem-bers, according to NYS SenatorJoseph P. Addabbo, Jr.

“Although we must continueto analyze the ultimate effects offederal tax reform on individualsand families in New York, whichmay be significant, I am glad mycolleagues and I took steps on thestate level to help people keep alittle more money in their pocketsand balance important work andfamily responsibilities,” saidAddabbo. “We may have a tougheconomic year coming up, but Iwill continue to push for policiesthat help New Yorkers managetheir personal finances and carefor their loved ones.”

January marks the first phaseof the “Middle Class Tax Reduc-tion Program” enacted as part ofthe 2016-2017 State Budget. Theprogram begins to reduce the per-sonal income tax (PIT) for NewYorkers earning under $300,000,and will cut these taxes statewideby $4.2 billion annually whenfully implemented by 2025. Inthe end, tax rates will fall to 5.5percent for those earning under$150,000 and to six percent fortaxpayers with higher incomesup to $300,000. Many small busi-nesses are also expected to ben-efit from the PIT reductions.

A general state minimum wageincrease that has been phasing inover several years has now raisedhourly pay from $11 to $13 formost New York City workers atthis end of the pay scale. Minimumwage earners working for Citybusinesses with 10 or fewer em-ployees will see an increase from$10.50 to $12 per hour.

“This hike in the minimumwage will help more New York-ers afford basic life necessitiesand keep their household budgetsin balance,” said Addabbo, a mem-ber of the Senate Labor Commit-tee. “With high housing, food andother costs in New York City, thissmall increase in hourly wageswill make a big difference in thelives of many low income work-ers and families.”

A new Paid Family Leave(PFL) program, an initiative longchampioned by Addabbo, will now

enable workers who need time outof the labor force to bond with newbabies, care for seriously ill lovedones, or deal with the challenges ofmilitary deployment to take eightweeks of paid leave from theirjobs. Funded through small em-ployee payroll deductions, PFL willprovide 12 weeks of job-protectedpaid leave at 67 percent of aworker’s weekly wage when it isfully phased in by 2021. For 2018,employees will receive 50 percentof their weekly wages.

“I was a long-time sponsor oflegislation creating a very similarPFL policy in New York State,”said Addabbo. “I was very pleasedwhen this vital family-friendlyprogram was adopted as part ofthe 2016-2017 State Budget.”Workers and employers interestedin more information about PFLmay visit www.ny.gov/paidfamilyleave or call thehelpline at 1-844-337-6303.

Some of the other newstate laws of 2018 are:

- S683/A2183 – Creates anonline listing of publicly funded orregistered afterschool and schoolage child care programs.

- S946A/A1105B – WaivesNYS application fees for all hon-orably discharged veterans,

- S2911A/A3198A (Co-spon-sored by Addabbo) – Authorizesadditional paid leave for certainemployees who served in combatneeding health related services.

- S4491/A6601 – Grants a per-sonal income tax deduction for theamount of any student loan that isdischarged as the result of the deathor permanent and total disabilityof the borrower.

- S5664B/A2409B - Authorizesthe Commissioners of Educationand Agriculture to establish volun-tary guidelines for the donation ofexcess, unused, edible food fromeducational institutions’ meal pro-grams to voluntary food assistanceprograms, of which Addabbo wasa co-sponsor.

“As the 2018 NYS legislativesession kicks off this week, I lookforward to continuing to serve myconstituents in the State Senateand working to support their inter-ests throughout upcoming statebudget negotiations and discus-sions on other vital public policyissues,” said Addabbo. “I hope lo-cal residents will contact me toexpress their thoughts and con-cerns about state actions in thedays, weeks and months to come.”

SUPERS HOLIDAYDear Editor,

In the spirit of holiday generosity please bear with me while I singthe praises of the best Supers in Sunnyside!

As an introduction, I have lived at 43-11 49th Street for overtwenty years, and Juan and Rosa Alba have been our Supers for themajority of the time. During the holidays our building is the talk ofthe block, and folks can’t stop themselves from checking out theholiday magic Juan and Rosa create annually. It’s like having ourvery own Macy’s Christmas window!

During this time of reflection, I felt compelled to shine thespotlight on Juan and Rosa who consistently showcase to us, in awonderfully tangible way, what it means to truly care about the workthey do and the positive impact on the tenants and community at large.

Happy New Year!Ruth Fernandez
