“God has given each of you a gift from the great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.”

Landis Homes • Annual Report 2011

Landis Homes welcomed our first residents in February 1964, but the creative dream and vision for Landis Homes began 50 years

ago in 1961. Prompted by an offer of a farm by Emma Shenk of Strasburg, Lancaster Mennonite Conference asked Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions to pick up this vision of offering “creative retirement living” for retired missionaries, pastors, church workers and others.

As described by A. Grace Wenger in a history of Landis Homes’ first 30 years, on November 7, 1961 the Mission Board appointed a ten-member planning committee: Levi Brubaker, Ira Buckwalter, Frank Enck, J. Mowery Frey, Charles Good, Clarence Harnish, Sanford High, Adam Martin, Orie Miller and Lester Wenger.

Orie Miller, who convened the first meeting on December 13, 1961, led a devotional meditation based on Psalm 71:17-19 and Psalm 92:12-15. He commented that 10 percent of the US population was over the age of 65 and that there were more than a million people over 85. He asked, "For what is God giving us these additional years?" He answered his own question saying: "Certainly for a purpose, and youth and old age together should find ways to make these extended years meaningful."

This spirit of seeking to honor God through creatively serving others has permeated Landis Homes history, and a few examples are shared throughout this Annual Report.

One recent example is the story of the “White Rose,” an original painting by Eva Beidler (story on page 15). It gives the history of how the painting made its way through several owners beginning with former board member Louise Stoltzfus, who is deceased, and eventually found its way to be gifted to Landis Homes.

Grace Wenger in her book describes how this spirit of creativity is encouraged in community life at Landis Homes. She shares, “No matter what talents or interests a resident may have--crafts, games, travel, nature study, reading, or writing--Landis Homes offers a creative outlet. Residents and staff unite to ‘affirm the importance of retirement years as a vital stage of life during which creative expressions are encouraged, recognized and valued.’

We are grateful for the creative acts of many… for Eva Beidler, for Louise Stoltzfus, for Grace Wenger, for Orie Miller, for Emma Shenk, and for all that you contribute as we together “serve creatively.” It takes all of us together to make a community seeking to honor and enrich the lives of others with deep gratitude for Christ’s love for each of us.

A Thankful and Giving HeartBy Bonnie Hemperly, Volunteer

I became Manager of Dogwood and General Store Gift Shoppes in 2007 by answering an announcement that appeared in a Landis Homes newsletter. In other words, I volunteered. In recent years, I also took on the role of managing the Flea Market on Fellowship Day. In both cases I was looking for “something” as a fill-in and as a way to feel valued. Volunteering created this opportunity.

I am delighted to be a part of Landis Homes and to get to know the residents, employees and visitors with whom I interact each week. They inspire me. I am also grateful that the time and energy I contribute has the benefit of increasing the benevolent care that provides resources for residents who are most in need.

I approach each day with a thankful and giving heart. I enjoy each moment of volunteering with its interesting and sometimes challenging situations. And most of all, I plan to continue my responsibilities as well as throw a little fun in the mix, to keep it interesting.

Friends of the Towel and BasinJuly 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011

We are deeply grateful to our Friends of the Towel & Basin who contributed to furthering Christ-like care at Landis Homes. A majority of donors helped support residents who can no longer pay for the full cost of services they need through donations to the Caring and Caring Endowment Funds. Other donors gave donations to provide financial aid to clients in Adult Day Services, to buy medical equipment, and to enrich the services to persons with memory loss. We apologize for any misspellings or omissions from the list. Please contact us with your corrections.

A SERVICE OF FOOT WASHInGBy Jim Leaman, Chaplain

Last spring I was invited to help facilitate a foot washing service in one of the memory support houses at Landis Homes. I had some reservations, but I liked that this idea had originated with team members who wanted to honor the residents in this act of serving and caring.

The service provided an opportunity for all of us to participate in a ritual of worship and practice which had previously been meaningful for many of the residents. The planning went forward, and the event was scheduled for an evening during Holy Week.

That evening a group of about twenty-four residents and team members gathered in the living room and began overflowing into the adjoining hallway. One of the Lititz House residents played prelude music on the keyboard and accompanied the group in singing the hymn, “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” Following a reading from Luke 22, I shared the bread and the cup of communion with those gathered.

The highlight of the evening was the service of foot washing. I read from John 13, which records Jesus washing feet, and shared some thoughts about humble

service and cleansing of the heart. Then we team members, taking prepared basins of water, each knelt in front of one of the residents to gently and lovingly bathe and wipe the resident’s feet. Following this we shared hugs and blessings.

The resident whose feet I had washed approached me and warmed my heart with a big “Thank you!”

Then unexpectedly one of the residents said she wished to wash the feet of a team member. Without any preplanning, she was assisted by others to

kneel, and then she washed and dried the feet of a team member. When she was finished and was assisted to her feet again, she gave the team member a

hug and kiss.

One team member said, “I am sure that when God placed this in the hearts of the Lititz House team they had no idea how

meaningful and how much of a blessing this would be to so many people.”

Friends of the Towel & Basin, Continued

A Chance to GrowBy Stu Landis, Recipient of the LeadingAgePA* Professional Advancement Award 2011

I am very pleased to receive this award which I see as an incredible honor. To me the award reflects so much about the opportunity that Landis Homes gives to its employees to grow and develop... even giving space for persons like myself to be curious, experiment and to find solutions.... some that even resulted in improvements.

I think serving creatively involves giving employees space and opportunity to explore methods of improvement. Landis Homes for me has welcomed innovation and encouraged the development of ideas to make our community a better place.

I give my thanks to each person on the IT team. Duane, who somehow keeps calm and consistently find solutions even in the midst of multiple technology

challenges. Chris, and his skill to manage virtual servers, Windows networking and pounding away until there is a breakthrough. Donna, who

is great at bridging the gap between Technology and Nursing.

I give my thanks also to the Landis Homes management team for their nomination and their kind encouragement. They lead well in honoring employees, making it a great place to work so that the ministry of Landis Homes can be accomplished: to serve aging adults and their families by honoring and enriching their lives in a community of Christ-like love. *formerly Panpha

My Greatest AwardBy Corrina Burkholder, Recipient of the LeadingAgePA* Non-licensed Caregiver of the Year 2011

Winning the Caregiver of the Year Award has been an extraordinary experience for me. I was surprised and honored. The brunch and awards ceremony were special for me since I was able to invite both some residents and co-workers who have helped be supportive of me. I have the group photo taken that day on my bookshelf at home. I treasure this photo since one of my dear resident friends has since passed away. She stated that she felt honored to be there to share my special day and I was honored and blessed by her being there as well.

I appreciate the dedication of my fellow workers on the personal care team. We work together to find creative ways to honor and enrich each life we touch. Landis Homes is a special place. Our leaders mentor these qualities and value our insights. That empowers us to serve in creative and unique ways. I appreciate also how other departments like housekeeping, dining, life enrichment and nursing support and assist each other. I feel that my award recognizes not just me, but the

entire team. We all work together to be the best we can be. Every person makes a difference in the lives of those we serve. Seeing residents enjoying life and smiling are still my greatest “awards.”

Doing for OthersBy Ada Blank, Adult Day Services Client“I retired when I was 65 and started coming to the center at Eden West. Now I am 80 and I still enjoy coming. I like the food - it is great. And the companionship is too. I enjoy riding the bus to get to the center. It is like taking a tour.

Making blankets for Project Linus* makes me feel

good. I enjoy it and I like that I am doing something for someone else. The staff taught me what to do and even though I can’t sew, I am able to make the blankets. It keeps my hands busy.

I don’t have any idea how many blankets I have made but I know they go to people who need them.

I saw a list of where the blankets go. Like when there is a fire, they go to the fire victims. The blankets are nice because there are no seams and they

are soft.”

* Project Linus is a national, non-profit organization providing love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need, through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers.”

Ways to GiveGifts of Cash

This can be as simple as writing a check to Landis Homes and mailing it to the Gift Planning Services, Landis Homes, 1001 East Oregon Rd., Lititz, PA 17543

Giving Online

Authorize a charge on a credit card by visiting our web site at www.landishomes.org and follow the link Donate Now.

Charitable Bequest

A gift by Will to Landis Homes is a tax free distribution of the estate. It can represent a percentage of the estate, same share as each child or other representation. The gift can be designated for a particular fund or it can be unrestricted.

Charitable Gift Annuity

A Landis Homes gift annuity is a simple contractual agreement between a donor and Landis Homes in which assets are given in exchange for payments for life. It includes valuable tax benefits.

Life Insurance

A policy can be donated outright or the donor can name Landis Homes as the beneficiary of the policy. Either way there is a tax deduction for the giver.

IRA Distributions

The law providing an outright charitable gift of IRA funds expired on December 31, 2011. Congress is considering an extension of this gift provision.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

Appreciated assets like real estate or securities can be turned into a cash gift without losing much of the gain to taxes. The gift asset is transferred to the trust and the trust sells the asset. Donors receive a tax deduction and receive income for life based on an agreed-upon rate.

Charitable Lead Trust

This is a unique tool that allows one to use an income producing asset to pay interest to Landis Homes first. It saves taxes and allows the donor to retain the asset principal or pass it on to heirs after a designated period of time.

15“God has given each of you a gift . . . serve one another.” • 1 Peter 4:10 Landis Homes • Annual Report 2011

The Story of the White RoseThe watercolor “Mature White Rose” was completed in time for a one-person art exhibit by Eva Beidler in 1993 at People’s Place Gallery in Intercourse, Pennsylvania, where Louise Stoltzfus was the curator. Eva said the inspiration came from a late summer rose that actually had some unusual coloring of gold and rust which she tried to represent in her piece.

Louise later told Eva she had received the painting as a gift. It hung in Louise’s home for many years. In 1995 when what is now the Azalea Room at Landis Homes was being created along with the building of Harvest View, a small group of board members and team members formed a committee to meet with the People’s Place Gallery to gather and purchase artwork for these new spaces. Louise Stoltzfus was very closely involved in this process.

One of the pieces the committee considered was the watercolor “Azalea” by Eva Beidler (pictured below left) and it was quickly decided it was out of our price range. Louise along with Luke

Bomberger (board member, committee member and now Harvest View resident) came up with the idea of finding 10 people to each contribute something to purchase the piece. The contributors were found and this is how the Azalea Room got its name.

Later, Louise Stoltzfus became a Landis Homes board member and served for several years. She also wrote 12 books including the book “Quiet Shouts” in which she interviewed a number of female church leaders including some Landis Homes residents.

After Louise passed away in 2002, her “White Rose” painting by Eva Beidler went to her brother, Alph Stoltzfus. Alph contacted Landis Homes in 2011, saying he wanted to sell the painting to help fund the further education of his daughters, Louise’s nieces. Knowing the relationship Louise had with Landis Homes and the location of another Beidler piece, he contacted Landis Homes to offer the right of first refusal. Again a group of board members and team members made it possible through their combined donations to purchase the piece which is destined to hang in the appropriately named “Rose” dining room following renovations this fall.

Landis Homes also had prints made of the “White Rose,” which Eva Beidler signed and numbered as limited edition prints. The only condition she asked is that they not be sold for profit, but made as gifts or used to raise benevolent care gifts for residents in financial need. This painting which started as gift of inspiration and a gift of appreciation will continue to be a gift to those who encounter it now and in the future.

Upon seeing the original painting again after 18 years, Eva shared, “….I know now, after painting, showing and selling my work for many years, that art is a gift. It is a gift, not just in terms of ‘talent’ but more importantly, in terms of gift to others. For me, art is a calling, a means of service. Yes, I paint to express myself, and then, it seems to work best if I share it.”
