It was a fabulous day of sailing on August 21 for the Race For The Case.  This year’s first place winner was Ocean Springs Yacht Club. GYC participants were Hugh Hawkins, Grant Kalil, John Harrison Doucet and Barrow Hawkins. Our GYC team placed 3rd in the Portsmouth category and first in the water balloon fight.

COMMODORE’S REPORT

  Although you can’t tell by the scorching temperatures, Fall is just around the corner, and that means football game parties and other activities at the Club!  Come on down!      The Manager Search Committee has hit the ground running and has 

already interviewed one candidate.  Vice Commodore Teal Salloum is chairing this committee, and committee members also include Michael Seicshnaydre, Stephen O’Mara, Michael Hage, Gayle Christian, Johnny Atherton, Prissy Joyner, Dickie Dunaway, Kit Glenn and Chip Speaker.  I want to thank all of them for devoting their time and effort to this committee.  While there is no deadline to have a new manager hired, the committee should make significant progress over the next month.   Sailing has consumed the Club over the last month, with the Club hosting the Junior Liptons and the Galloway Regattas.  Thanks to Sam Vasquez, the Sailing Committee, the staff, and all those involved in making sure these events were a success.  Great work!   As you know, recently the MISCO and Marine Life properties were re‐zoned for gaming by the City.  Various permits and approvals must be obtained before a casino vessel can be located at the site.  While it is unclear at this time as to whether this proposed project will receive those permits and approvals, we hope to have casino representatives make a presentation to the Club membership within 

the next few months to share their plans and address questions and concerns.   Don’t forget that the newly formed tax‐exempt organization to promote junior sailing is still looking for tax deductible contributions to help “kick start” this organization.  If interested, please contact the Club office or Vice Commodore Teal Salloum.   I want to thank Past Commodore Chris Crighton, who chaired the Nominating Committee, and also thank his committee members for their work in nominating an outstanding slate of Flag Officers and Board Members that will be presented for approval at the upcoming annual meeting on October 19.   The Governing Board has unanimously recommended that the membership approve a modification of the “junior membership” category at the upcoming annual meeting on October 19.  You may recall that this category was added to the By Laws two years ago, and basically allows a new member under age 35 to pay 30% of the initiation fee and finance the remainder up to five years.  However, in an effort to attract younger members to the Club, the Board is proposing that this “junior membership” category be modified, so that new members under age 35 are eligible to pay ½ of the current dues and 10% of the current initiation fee.  When those junior members reach age 35, they would become full members, begin paying full dues, and would pay the remaining balance of the initiation fee.  If you have any questions about this proposal, please contact me or Will Van Kirk, Membership Chairman.  See you at the club, Marty Warren, Commodore

  High School Sailing is off to a great start.  Both teams, St. Patrick and Gulfport High, had a ʺmeet and greetʺ in the Ballroom on August 24.  We had a great turn out.  Both teams registered and ordered sailing gear.  Practice begins August 31 with St. Patrick practicing on Tuesdays from 3:45 p.m. til 6:15 p.m. and Gulfport High on Wednesdays from 3:45 p.m. til 6:15 p.m.  If your child would like to participate please see details on the GYC website under High School Sailing.   Both High School Sailing teams are hosting a Spaghetti Dinner/Silent Auction Fundraiser on October 7 in the Ballroom. Tickets are $10.00 each.  A ticket puts you in the drawing for a 32ʺflat screen TV 

and you do not need to be present to win.  Take‐outs will be available.  We will also have a silent auction.  If you would like to donate an item it would be greatly appreciated.  Just drop it by the GYC office.  Special guests of the night will include our own Olympic Sailors, John Dane and Austin Sperry.  All proceeds from this fundraiser will go to buy sailing equipment for our teams.  Tickets maybe purchased from Sam Vasquez at 323‐1336, Jennifer Kalil at 547‐9600or any sailing team member.  Please buy a ticket and support our high school sailors!

POWERBOAT COMMITTEE

MADISONVILLE WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL  October 23‐24, 2010 

  “The weather is here – I wish you were beautiful” are the words of a verse in a popular song by that Son of a Sailor – Jimmy Buffet.     Well, the weather of fall will be here in October and the Mississippi Sound is beautiful – with no oil in sight.     Fall on the Gulf Coast means the GYC Madisonville Rendezvous is coming up on October 23‐24 in Madisonville, LA.  For the past several years this has been one of the most popular and big‐time fun of all GYC Powerboat events during the year.  GYC has a number of beautiful, classic wooden boats that participate along with full crews of family and friends that make the event great.  Some of the wooden boats from GYC that might be seen at the show are:   Rufnek II: Captains Teel Salloum, Sherman Muths Jr., Lawrence Hage & Commodore Michael Hage; Bout Time: Commodore Johnny Atherton; Loophole: Captain John Heath, Alligator: Commodore Wayne Tisdale; Shamis: Commodore Ron Werby; Madame II: Captain George Boddie; Ring Dang Doo: Captain Rick 

Quinn; VanAlbert Lee: Commodore Tommy Hewes; Rebel: Captain John Webb   There is also a nice contingent of boats from the Plastic Boat Society that come along bringing their family and friends to join the festivities even though plastic boats are obviously not allowed to enter this 

great event.  Some, probably not all, of these boats that have participated in this event – or could participate – are:  Miss Audrey: Captain Woody Bailey; Frayed Knot: Captain Gary Robinson; Glass Sea: Captain Dickie Dunnaway; Double Shot: Captains Jason Smith and Drew 

Allen;  Ariel: Captain Bruce Norman; Scorpio: Captain Betty Collins; Free Spirit: Captain Jim Montgomery; and no doubt others.     All are welcome.   Hopefully, many GYC members will join with the boating contingent of GYC and have a great time at Madisonville this year.  Next month we will provide a list of activities, dates and times for this event.  If you would like additional information you can go on‐line and google Madisonville Wooden Boat Festival, or contact Wayne Tisdale at 216‐3001.  

Auxiliary Happenings…

  What a wonderful family gathering with Grandmothers, Mothers, Daughters and Granddaughters sharing time together at our July Luncheon.  This is truly what life is about…watching with love as our families grow.   Sharing moments such as this reminds us of all that should make us grateful.  Hostesses for July were Bobbye Carraway, Darlene Warren and Jeannie Pullis. The pictures tell it all…   Each year the Ladies Auxiliary sets aside one of our meetings to honor all those who served as President of the Auxiliary. In August, each of the Past Presidents spoke of their accomplishments during their term.      Our hostesses for August were Anne Heidelberg, Bernice Simmons, Mary Alice Bailey and Maybelle 

Dukes who surprised members with wonderful Luau decorations of leis, masks and bamboo candles in expectation of the GYC Luau.   Our September meeting, on the 22nd, will be Wine Tasting presented by Mike Mensi from L & M Package Store. Don’t miss it! Hostesses for September are Sandy Morrison, Vicki Heath, Nancy Wheeler, and Mary Joyce Laycock.   Joyce Smith (228‐861‐3397or 228‐222‐3146) or jsmith77@cableone.net  makes the reservations for the Wednesday Luncheon on the Monday before so please let her know by then so that she can provide an accurate number for the lunch menu. 

LADIES AUXILIARY

  I can’t believe the summer of 2010 is behind us.  Boy was it HOT! 

  Mahalo! The Luau was great and I hope everyone had a hip swinging good time. A big thank you to  everyone that helped,  especially the GYC staff.   I would love to hear some suggestions and or comments regarding football 

season. Last month we did FREE wings for the Saints game. I am open to any fun football ideas.   September 5th is our last Sunset Sunday. Get your cameras ready! We will have a photography contest for the best Sunset taken from the GYC property. Lots of prizes, music, food and fun. See you on the deck Sunday, September 5th at 5pm.   As always check your e‐log, posted flyers, GYC monitor and the Log Sheet about upcoming events and details.  Victoria Salloum Chambers Entertainment Chair 

   

ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE Saints Kick off Party August 21

SEC Saturdays and Who Dat Sundays!   Watch your favorite teams in the Chart Room. Every Saturday see the biggest SEC rivalries and your favorite Mississippi teams, while Sundays it’s all about the Saints!!  We’ll have special Game Day menus and beers iced down early.     Upcoming Games Sept. 2 Saints at Tennessee Sept. 4  Jacksonville State at Ole Miss  Sept. 4  Memphis at Miss. State Sept. 9  Auburn at Miss. State Sept. 9  Saints vs. Minnesota

   August was a very busy month for the sailing program.  We could not have pulled off hosting three big events without the help of the Regatta Committee and the all the other  members 

who volunteered their time. We also would like to especially thank the members of the newly formed Grill’men  (and Ladies) Club. I do not know the numbers off hand , but they sold a lot of burgers.   Regatta Reports: Jr. Lipton’s It turned out to be one for the history books. GYC  upped the bar by hosting a two day clinic prior to the event with all the local Pro’s and Hot Shots. They 

actually got on the boats to sail rather than couching from a skiff! John Morrow  and the race committee did a wonderful job running the races‐‐despite having to deal with a north breeze. Sam V and the green flag boats kept the race course clear of all spectators boats, 

keeping the playing field even for the 16 clubs. Fairhope  was 1st, followed by Pensacola YC  2nd. and Houston 3rd. Our  young GYC  team finished 9th.   Knost It was a normal light air regatta in the pass with the current playing a large role in how boats finished.  The GYC  team  consisted of Ana Gayle Christian, Claire Yoste, and Raemie Ladner. The team was in 3rd going into the last race on Sunday. The girls got caught in a hole on the left side of the course and could not dig out deep enough, finishing 5th overall.    Galloway Regatta Once again, we hosted an epic regatta with 93 Single Handed Boats competing. Seven classes of boats sailed on three courses. The remnants of Tropical 

Depression 5 made the sailors come in early on Saturday  but we were able to get in enough quality races to make it a regatta.  Hank Saurage was top senior, Leslie Dane was top female and John Dane placed first in Finns. Our green fleet sailors excelled as well, and our junior sailors Luke Seicshnaydre  and Dawson Doucet placing second and third in 

Open Bics.     42nd Race for the Case This fun race from Gulfport to Biloxi is still well below pre‐ Katrina numbers in terms of participation.  The 

Biloxi schooners were unable to attend but we look forward having them back next year. The sailors that did compete this year enjoyed  steady, 5‐8 knot west wind and a great party at the Biloxi Yacht Club.    Lipton Team – Labor Day Weekend BWYC Skippers will be John Watson Galloway, Sam Hopkins, Ana Gayle Christian and Hugh  Hawkins. We would like to invite all members to come show their support in the Bay.  Friday Night Racing September 10, September 17, September 24, October 1, October 8 The sailing Committee will host Friday Night races on the listed dates above. Juniors and Adults are encouraged to participate. Boats will start off the visitor’s pier sailing out of the channel to a designated mark.  First start will be at 6pm. Members must sign up on the registration sheet on the GYC Bulletin board located on the lower deck.   Adult Sailing Adult Sailing Classes will run in conjunction with the Friday Night Races. Adult sailing will have priority on the boats.  All members interested in Racing or Adult Lessons will need to sign up on the registration sheet on the GYC Bulletin board located on the lower deck.

Toast to the Coast ad

  HAPPY SEPTEMBER 2010!!  Hurricane Season for 2010 is half over, Life is GOOD and getting Better!!   We have just completed the second year of operations in our new club facility and it has been successful.  Thank You for your support and encouragement. 

  Another way  the Club will continue to show its appreciation to our members is to offer  the popular “THANK YOU THURSDAY” lunches in September. These are great days to bring your Office Staff, Friends, Relatives, and Prospective members to the Club.  The Lunch Buffet will be reduced to near Half‐Price ($5.50) for each Thursday in September.    Another Thank You for the Members of GYC, discounted Dance Lessons, will begin this month and continue throughout the year.  Look for more details here in the Log Sheet and in our daily E‐Logs and come on down to Dance, Dance, Dance!!
