Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed

your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with you Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. Bishop Maurice Shexnayder

We will publish this list once a month. “I do not know how philosophers may ultimately define religion; but from Micah to James it has been defined as service to one’s fellow human rendered by following the great rule of justice and mercy, of wisdom and righteous-ness.” —Theodore Roosevelt

Liturgical Roles for September

From the Pastor’s Desk

It’s been raining. I’m sure you noticed. As I write this, now tropical storm Harvey is meandering around in the Gulf after wreaking devastation on Texas coastal cities, and drowning the city of Houston. Predictions are that it is coming back, possibly hitting land somewhere around Sabine Pass. Clearly we are not done.

It feels rather strange to sit here in Lafayette, with (relatively) dry roads for the most part, trying to carry on with the day’s affairs. Such total devastation is just down the road from us, we remain under threat of some kind of severe weather, and it’s kind of like waiting for the other shoe to drop. In the meantime, we sit and we pray, as well we should.

More than anything else, times like this remind me that we are really not in charge. Those who have flooded here in Louisiana in recent months can certainly bear witness to how quickly the weather can totally dis-rupt one’s life, for months if not years, stripping away not only treasured possessions and memories, but the place of safety one once called home. In those moments, everything changes. That’s the kind of thing so many in Texas are experiencing right now.

So we pray, and we have been doing that. Yet experience shows that God does not usually swoop in and shove deadly storms to the side, or suck them up into the upper atmosphere. I remember after Hurricane Katrina how some people (who should have known better) characterized that storm as some kind of retribution for the sins of the people of New Orleans. (They seem to have overlooked the fact that for the most part, the storm missed the French Quarter.) I, for one, do not believe God acts in that way, aiming storms and tossing lightning bolts. Rather, in his own mysterious way, God lets his sun shine on the just and the unjust, as the Scriptures tell us. Likewise, his rain falls upon the dirty and the clean, while the wind blows where it wills.

It’s not that I don’t believe God is active in our world and our lives. I do. He just doesn’t seem to be active in the world in the way in which we often wish (demand?) he would be. We often pray, “God keep us from the storm”. Sometimes the storm avoids us, sometimes not. When the storm strikes, however, we are often disap-pointed or even angry that God didn’t obey our commands. This dismay can blind us to the ways in which God is alive and active in the midst of the storm. Witness the tremendous generosity and bravery being exhibited by so many as they reach out to those in need. Is that not the grace of God at work? I believe it is.

I firmly believe that God is with us in the midst of the storm. We just have to pay attention.
