She even prayed with us! It felt good, because I felt like I had helped evangelize the gospel of Christ to someone who didn’t know Him.

I want to thank my spon-sors from King Ave who made this trip possible for me to attend. I will remem-ber this trip for the rest of my life!

Thank you for this great opportunity.

Originally published in New Life News, August 2012. Printed with permission.

Recently I was awarded a scholarship to join King Avenue on a mission trip to Scranton, PA. I really enjoyed meeting a bunch of “cool” people. We went to help families restore their homes. We got to meet these awesome fami-lies before we began our work.

Our team worked on Elaine’s house, sanding it and painting it white. Elaine was incredibly nice, providing cookies and soft drinks to us through the day. Elaine, was sweet helping with paper goods, that we often forgot.

My favorite part of work camp was work-ing on the homes. I felt good knowing that I was able to help some-one who did not have help before. Our resi-dent wasn’t religious, but she would sit with us during our devo-tion and would listen to us pray.

On the last day we had a closing service. We invited Elaine to join us, but she said “No.” To our surprise she showed up. She sat with us and was very moved by the service, listening and taking in all that was said.

NNEMAP by Anne Nelson

Through June of 2012, NNEMAP has distributed over $150,000 dollars of food to our clients. Last year is was just over $102,000. We calculate all of the donations from our churches, all of the free items we get from Mid-Ohio, and the low-priced items we purchase from Mid-Ohio at $1.40 per pound. That is what cus-tomers pay at the grocery store on average. We weigh items that come in so we have the proper value. We project that NNEMAP will distribute well over $300,000 in food in 2012! Thank you for contributing!

THANK YOU King Avenue for all the back packs. The

children were ecstatic to receive them! The parents and teachers thank you too.

Proceeds from the Christ-mas tree sale last year cov-ered NNEMAP’s operating costs for a month. We hope to double that this year. Watch the Carillon and bul-letin for details. Plan to buy your FRESH FRASER FIR TREE AND WREATH to benefit NNEMAP! We will start taking orders in Octo-ber for delivery the first Saturday in December.

The Harmony for Hunger Concert to benefit NNE-MAP will be November 16 at the Church of the Master in Westerville. Mark you calendars now!

NEW LIFE UMC by Kathy Durfee

One of the New Life youth was awarded a scholarship to join the King Avenue youth summer mission trip to Scranton, PA. You can read about Timeeka’s story on page 3. King Avenue plays a big role in the life of New Life and their min-istry to reach out to the homeless and low income neighbors right here in our area. Thanks for all that you do.

New Life UMC continues to be a busy place. Plugged- I n , t h e t u t o r i n g /mentoring program, will start back up this fall. This program has really grown and so has a need for vol-unteers. Let us know if you are interested in learning more. You don’t have to commit to participating every week.

There is also a need for Sunday morning breakfast volunteers. If you have a small group that would like to serve or if you are an individual with some time to help, please let us know.

There is always a need for gently-used clothing for the clothing room. They continue to see big crowds.

With the start of the new academic year, we welcome Ellen Vandenberg as the new cam-pus intern. Ellen has been an officer within the ranks of Campus Ministry for two years and is well suited to lead Campus Ministry alongside Pastor John Wooden. Ellen is the younger sister of Erin Vandenberg, who is currently serving in the Peace Corps.

Imminent Events for Campus Ministry

• Tuesday night gatherings commence on Tuesday, August 28 at 6:30pm in Logos Lounge. Students will participate in conversations of faith as well as share in a meal together;

• Weekly 9am and 11am worship at King Avenue and 10am worship at Stone Village Church;

• Monthly service ~ mission opportunity;

• Monthly social events;

• Hocking Hills Retreat in November; and

• Alternative Winter Mission Trip in December.

The King Avenue Players present

CINDERELLA Thursday, October 25 at 7:30pm

Friday, October 26 at 7:30pm Saturday, October 27 at 3pm and 7:30pm

The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance. Originally presented on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's CIN-DERELLA was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its rec-reation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second re-make in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilar-ity, the hearts of children and adults alike still soar when the slipper fits.

OSU Home Game Parking

The first OSU home game is set for Saturday, September 1 and King Avenue is again offering our parking lots to those in need of a safe and convenient parking location. As in years past, King Avenue will be accepting a monetary dona-tion for those parking in our lots. If you have any questions, please contact Pastor John Wooden, [email protected].

SVC Worship

Formerly Homeless

Mentorship Program

Stone Village Church (SVC) has been invited to participate in a Mentorship Program through National Church Residences. The purpose of the program is to offer support, guidance and hope to formerly homeless residents in Na-tional Church Residences’ Permanent Supportive Housing programs. (Note: the idea here is NOT to provide financial or mate-rial support, but rather to serve as a positive role model that encourages and reinforces behaviors and activities that promote self-sufficiency.)

This is a wonderful oppor-tunity to connect and to serve those in need. Below you will find a listing of responsibilities, require-ments and a mentor's time commitment to the pro-gram. If you feel called to this meaningful and im-portant community minis-try, please contact Pastor John Wooden with your

Megan Evans will be our featured artist for Septem-ber. Her exhibit of mixed media and abstract paint-ing will coincide with the Short North Gallery Hop on Saturday, September 1. You can view Megan's ex-hibit in SVC from 5:30 - 8pm.
