I want to thank ROCS (The Ruger Owners and Collectors Society) for coming in from all over the country to be part of our July 2015 meeting. Our center aisle was entirely black and gold with 22 incredible display-only ta-bles plus an additional 10 trade tables! Lee Sundermeier did an excellent job in organiz-ing the show within a show. Over 60 ROCS members were in attendance and they seemed to appreciate the benefits we bring as a quality-oriented, private show. They will be back with us next year July 16-17, 2016. See page 4, “Ruger ROCS!.”

The Winchester Arms Collectors Associa-tion is coming to the September 19-20. 2015 meeting. To accommodate backboards and taller exhibits, they will likely be located along part of the west wall (row GG) Be sure to visit the WACA area and bring out your Win-chesters. Jim Curlovic has coordinated this event each fall over the last three years and he is excited to bring the group to The Roberts Centre for the first time. Buses stand ready to transport our north-ern members at less then it would cost to drive!

The beautiful Springfield Model 1812 musket on the cover of this newsletter was part of John Siekierka’s ex-hibit on the Springfield Armory this past May. If you missed our Annual Display Show you missed seeing some really nice historical fire-arms and accoutrements such as those in-cluded in his award-winning display. I want to thank everyone who made our Display Show and Members Banquet a huge success es-pecially the displayer’s, judges, authors, and banquet speakers. More coverage inside.

Also, as much as I hate to see this beautiful cover folded, doing so will save thousands of dollars on postage over the next year, and will help keep our prices down. In addition, although we will still have six mailings per year we are reducing the number of newsletters from 6 to 4. You will receive a winter, spring, summer and fall newsletter plus a small, interim mailing in October and April. This newsletter covers both the September and November meetings. In mid to late October look

for a small envelope with the September Ap-plicant List, Annual Dues Statement, and a reminder for the November meeting. Effec-tive immediately you may reserve tables for up to two shows at a time. To avoid confusion take extra care in filling out the Table Applica-tion on page 13.

Unfortunately, these changes are not enough to offset the cost increases that we are facing from hall rental to liability insurance to small items like gun ties and badges. Beginning in January of 2016, table rental will go up $10 except for annual tables. If you commit to all six meetings and prepay in advance, tables remain at $70. Otherwise, tables will be $80 beginning in January. Annual Table Registra-tion forms are now available upon request at

the business office and at the September and November meetings. More information on page 10.

In addition, for the first time in 14 years, Life and Senior Life dues will increase. Ef-fective October 1st, Life dues will be $700 and Senior Life Dues (age 65 or older) will be $400. With this change will come a long awaited pay-ment plan option. This is the only area in which dues will increase and more informa-tion can be found on page

10. We hope that we can count on our 3,700 current Life members for their continued sup-port. We are in the planning stages for pro-grams exclusively for those who have made the commitment to belong for life.

My goal is to make sure that the association can continue to operate and meet our found-er’s objectives for the long term. We need and appreciate your support!

The launching of “The OGCA Express” from Cleveland to Wilm-ington was an over-whelming

success. The purpose of the trip was to provide transportation for some of our Northern members to attend OGCA’s

May Display Show in Wilmington, Ohio. Our charter bus left Cleveland at 6:00 AM and arrived at The Roberts Centre shortly after 9:00 AM with one stop in between.

Some passengers commented that they were able to catch a nap on the trip which is possible when you leave the driving to us. The fare of $20.00 was commented on as being very reasonable and OGCA was more than willing to absorb the differ-ence in the cost of the charter.

If you rode the bus, please tell your fellow members about this great service. Any-one with an interest in attending future meetings in Wilmington via “ The OGCA’s Express” can reserve a seat with the form below.

We will do all that we can to accommo-date our members from Northern Ohio, Western Pennsylvania and Michigan while we attempt to locate a new site for a meeting up north.

The origin of the term “kit gun” came about many years ago when the need was felt for a small, accurate .22 cal re-volver that could be packed easily in a hunting or fishing kit. Such a gun would be ideal for bagging small game, snake protection, economical plinking fun or in an emergency, self defense. Smith & Wesson fulfilled this need with a series of small-frame, adjustable-sight high quality revolvers with 2 and 4 inch barrels.

This is their story ....It all began back in 1896 with the develop-ment of a series of revolvers S&W called the “hand ejectors”. The main feature was a cylinder which swung out to the left side for loading and ejecting cartridges. The first of these to be produced, with a small frame size, was known as the “I” frame. It was first chambered for the .32 S&W Long cartridge. This initial revolver was manufactured from 1896 to 1903, and was incrementally improved over the fol-lowing years. Production of the various .32 I-frames continued until World War II halted production temporarily.

In 1910, a San Francisco gun dealer, Phil Bekeart, discussed with S&W the possi-bility of a .22 long rifle target revolver built on the .32 I-frame. He was so convinced that this would be a good seller that he prevailed on the company to build and sell him 1,000 guns. Accordingly, S&W tooled up, and by the spring of 1911, they began production. However, only 292 of these “.22/32” Target Models were com-pleted and sold, as demand did not meet the expectations of Mr. Bekeart. In fact, additional production was not initiated un-til 1914. The Bekeart guns, now offered in the S&W catalog, represented the first marriage of the .22 caliber and the small I-frame.

In 1934, in response to some inquiries as to the possibility of a shorter-barreled .22 LR small frame revolver as a handy take-along for hunters and fishermen in their travel kits, Smith and Wesson crafted a prototype. This gun, numbered 527712, was kept in-house by a member of the Wesson family. Other prototypes might possibly have been made. Actual produc-tion started in 1936. These were built on the I-frame, and featured 4” barrels and target sights. Stock configurations varied,

with three styles. These were round butt regular checkered, rebated-frame extend-ed square butt checkered (Regulation Police type), and Bekeart-style extended square butt “two screw” checkered stocks that fully enclosed the rear grip strap. The first gun bore serial number 530,003 in the .32 Hand Ejector series. It was called the .22/32 Kit Gun. Production continued until World War II, with the last serial numbers of the “pre-war” guns probably coming in the 529,450 to 534,600 range, although the opinions of experts vary. It should be noted that S&W did not produce complete guns with sequentially progressive serial numbers, nor did they ship them, neces-sarily, in serial number order. It’s been es-timated that anywhere from 1325 to 1500 “pre-war” kit guns were assembled from 1936 to 1940.

Some completed guns were not shipped until after the war, at which point they were upgraded with the new hammer safety block and shipped with a combi-nation of pre-war and post-war features. These guns, know as “transition” guns are quite collectible and valuable today. Interestingly, some gun dealers who re-ceived these pre-war/post-war guns re-jected them in favor of newly-manufac-tured guns, not realizing, of course, that they were being blessed with future col-lector prizes!

Following the war, production started anew on the Kit Guns, beginning at se-rial number 551,123 of the 32 Hand Ejec-tor series. The numbers were intermixed with the .32 guns’ serial numbers. These first post-war guns used pre-war frames, but incorporated newer components in-cluding the now-standard hammer block safety.

1953 Ushers in the Final Standard and most significant

.22 cal Kit Gun Design

In 1953, a new series of Kit Guns was produced. The official designation was “22/32 Kit Gun, Model of 1953”. These differed from previous production in hav-ing a new “I” frame with a coiled main-spring and micro-click sights. They had 4 screws, coil mainsprings, larger trigger guards and larger grip frames like the new “J-frame” revolvers then being pro-duced for personal defense purposes. This began a separate serial number se-ries starting with number 101. This serial number series continued until October, 1968, when the serial numbers had pro-gressed to number 136,465.

The top side plate screw was authorized for elimination on December 13, 1955. This change was phased in gradually between serial number 11,000 approxi-mately 14,000.

It was in this Model of 1953 series that a 2” barreled version was offered for the first time by S&W.

In 1957, Smith & Wesson renamed its repertoire of revolvers with numbers, and the Kit Gun became the Model 34. The

Page 6model number was stamped in the frame side of the yoke hinge.

A significant change came about in Oc-tober, 1960 when the Model 34 Kit Gun was produced using the complete “J” frame, which was slightly larger. It simpli-fied manufacturing, and the change was implemented at serial number 70,000. These J-frame revolvers are stamped “Model 34-1”. A new “M” serial prefix series was started in 1969, beginning with serial M1. An extremely rare bunch of about 15 guns, chambered in .22 LR and with fixed “groove” rear sights, were crafted in March of 1972. Only four were completely assembled and shipped.

The 1988 Model 34-2 models had a new yoke retention system.

An Airweight Kit Gun was introduced in November 1954 with pilot production be-ginning at serial number 5000. However, actual mass production and distribution did not begin until January 1958 with se-rial numbers starting at 32,244. This was first known as the Model of 1955, and later officially as the Model 43 22/32 Kit Gun Airweight. Since it was based on the J-frame rather than the I-frame from the beginning, there was never a 43-1 varia-tion. Although there are perhaps 3 exist-ing Model 43 examples with 2” barrels, it appears that the 43 production was offi-cially only offered in the 3.5” barrel length. The Model 43 was discontinued in 1974.

In May of 1960, the .22/32 Model 51 Rim-fire Magnum Kit Gun was introduced, chambered for the .22 Winchester Rimfire Magnum. The 51 was S&W’s initial entry into .22 magnum Kit Gun production and began with serial number 52,637. These were made only on the J-frame and 4” barrels, produced until 1974. Both round and square butt along with blue and nickel variations were available, with the round butt type being the rarest. Models 43 and 51 were both numbered in the standard Model 34 series.

Smith & Wesson’s first stainless Kit Gun, the Model 63, was offered from 1977 to 1998, in both square and round butt con-figurations. Both 4” and 2” barrels were produced with the 2” barrel being some-what scarce.

A .22 magnum Model 650 stainless was introduced in 1983. The 650 is the only Kit Gun ever produced with a 3” bull bar-

rel, only in round butt and non adjustable frame rear sights. During its production years a “Special Order” with accompany-ing .22 LR cylinder was occasionally avail-able. These highly desired 650 Special Order sets are estimated to be less than 100 produced. The 650 was discontin-ued in 1988.

Also in 1983 the stainless .22 magnum Model 651 was introduced and became the final classic Kit Gun production. A very scarce “Special Order” 651 with ac-companying .22 LR cylinder was offered. This last Kit Gun model was built only with a 4” barrel until its last year of pro-duction. In 1999 a unique single 651 spe-cial manufacturing run of 1241 units was produced with a 2” barrel and an Uncle Mike round butt stock, making it one of the rarest of Kit Gun variations.

Post-war Kit Guns made after 1953 were offered with either 4” or 2” barrels. Both blue and nickel finishes were available, as well as round and square grip frames. The central “diamond” pattern of the checkered grips was eliminated in 1968. The pinned barrel was dumped in 1982. As a point of information, all Kit Guns since the beginning have chambers re-cessed for the cartridge rims. As a spe-cial note, these little gems were offered in many options and limited “Special Order” configurations. Rare and unusual exam-ples appear on occasion.

These handy revolvers continued as a very popular gun with sportsmen, fisher-men, plinkers, and anyone who just want-ed a small, handy, accurate .22 revolver.

However, all good things must come to an end, and in 1991, the Model 34 Kit Guns were dropped from the Smith & Wesson lineup. Still, the demand for these small guns was such that S&W continued their J-frame model 63 and model 651 produc-tion for another 7 and 8 years respec-tively.

The 651 was discontinued in 1999 and is considered the FINAL YEAR of the true original Kit Gun production.

Good specimens of all the Kit Gun varia-tions are in high demand today with some variations being very scarce. Prices have escalated rapidly in the last few years, now considered a true S&W Classic and suggested by many as being “The Finest Revolver Ever Designed”.

Life Member Tom Clapper has been with OGCA since 1970. He has graciously dis-played his collections many times at the OGCA Annual Display Show and as a Featured Displayer. Thank you, Tom, for setting the record straight on the Kit Gun!

MAY BAnquet wAs “weLL done” (no Pun intended) Neither fire, nor lightening nor mon-soon rains could stop the May 30th An-nual Members Banquet! Just one week prior to the big event a roof fire above the kitchen at the Hope Hotel required a last minute relocation to the Holiday Inn Dayton-Fairborn. However, based on the crowd it seems that everybody made it to the new location despite a major lightning storm that evening. OGCA Director and Banquet Chairman, Charles Metcalf, was grateful for all the quick work to pull to-gether a great evening with fantastic food among friends!

Speaking to the sold out crowd NRA Presi-dent Allan Cors said it was great to be back home in Ohio! Formerly of Cincin-nati, Mr. Cors joined OGCA 56 years ago in 1959 and spoke from the heart at the positive difference that OGCA is making. Every member can be proud to have con-

tributed to the important causes he men-tioned, from our political action committee to our educational projects, to the gener-ous financial support of the NRA, and our constant focus on inviting new genera-tions to the collecting world and shooting sports.

Next up was keynote speaker Secretary of State Jon Husted who brought at-tendees to their feet with several stand-ing ovations. He certainly struck a chord with our crowd when he spoke about his efforts to make sure that the vote of active duty service men and women get counted! After the banquet OGCA President Rob-ert Ray Preston presented Husted (who was already a member) with an honorary life membership, of which only a very few have ever been given in our 78 years.

We were honored to have many distin-

guished guests including Ohio Senator (and member) Joe Uecker; Judge Col-leen O’Tool; Greene County Sheriff, Gene Fischer; Aaron Davis and Bill Poole of the NRA; Annual Display Show Judges T. Rees Day, David M. Rachwal and Alan R. Sinz; and Buckeye Firearms Asso-ciation President, Jim Irvine and Vice President, Linda Walker. John Darby set the tone early on with the singing of the national anthem. (Look for a featured member profile in an upcoming newsletter about this well-traveled professional tenor who manages to find time to attend virtu-ally every meeting. See page 9 for some great photos thanks to Chris Rohal and Tom Schiffer!

Our next banquet on May 7, 2016 will be a casual affair onsite after the show in the lobby of The Holiday Inn. More details to follow.

On the following page you will see the fantastic of variety contained in our 2015 Annual Display Show. We had everything from Robert Landies’ historical Mauser’s (1871 to 1887) to William Combs’ mili-tary firearms used by Spain in the Span-ish American War. For our Colt collectors was a Python exhibit by Rodney Kirian, while representing our many Smith & Wesson collectors was Curtis J. Tuttle with his S&W Performance Center pistols. The Noble’s collection of meticulously displayed P 38’s was a real eye catcher. Featured on the cover of this newsletter is just one example of many amazing items found in John Siekierka’s display of the venerable Springfield Armory! The Model 1812 flintlock musket is a type 2 made 1816 in .69 caliber.

It’s been too long since we have seen John Eckert of Arizona, and this time he brought a presentation of Lugar pistols made for and by the Swiss from 1900 to 1975. Ron Lough of Iowa always goes off the chart in terms of creativity, and this year his display featured the Winchester Model 20, .410 shotgun manufactured in 1919 which was sold in a kit including the gun, shells and clay targets, thrower, cleaning rod and literature. The variety continues!

A beautiful display of Cosmopolitan and Gwynn & Campbell carbines made in Ohio during the Civil War from the collection of

Randall Setty. WACA Board member, Jim Curlovic (who is organizing their Midwest show at our September meeting), could be found with his collection of rare Win-chesters plus a Hotchkiss prototype. Jim is always ready, willing and able to provide insight to a novice collector! The same is true of Warren Buxton who brought Walther experimental and prototype .22, .25 and 9 mm automatic pistols.

Sean McCarter brought out his complete collection of Harrington & Richardson pistols manufactured between 1928 and 1941. He has displayed in the past, and says it’s a great way to get the word out about what you collect. (Once you do a display people come to you with great finds.)

Even Ty Greenlees’ great photos do not do justice, and we hope you were there to see first-timer Brett Kramer’s unique and educational display on the subject of Colt’s plastic division such as molded plas-tic parts from the late 1920’s to 1990. He included information on the process Colt used to make grips and related items. Oh, and how about the miniatures in the Navy Luger’s display put on by Dave Molchen and Rick Anzellotti? If you were not there, kick yourself and mark your calen-dar for May 7-8, 2016!

Display Show Chairman Sherman Kirk-land and his committee selected three

completely new judges this year and he would like to thank T. Rees Day of Ken-tucky, David M Rachwal of Central Ohio and Alan R. Sinz of Texas. Extremely knowledgeable, their expertise was indis-pensable!

Every single display was of such high qual-ity and professionalism, but Sherm Kirk-land would like to get your opinion on at-tracting more displays! He estimates that there could have been room for another 12 to 15 tables. If you have displayed be-fore, and/or were thinking about doing a display this year but didn’t, why not? What would encourage you to display your col-lection in 2016? How can we encourage more participation in terms of exhibitors, visitors and voting for the Members Choice Award? From our visiting members, what did you like and what would you like to see more of? What suggestions do you have for improving the Annual Display show? Please drop us a line at the business of-fice or visit Sherm Kirkland, III, at row N 4-5 (orange flag) and we will make sure that next year’s committee receives your valuable input!

Thank you in advance for your time and enjoy the photos of our great displays on the next page.

Every single display this year was outstanding and OGCA would like to thank each displayer for giving their valuable time to share their personal collecting interests with our members. You are the firearm historians and preservationists that keep the collecting interest going for generations to come. Thank You.

Members were glad to have curb to curb bus service to and from the banquet. (Good news: no buses for 2016 as the event is planned for next door in the lobby of the Holiday Inn.)

Pay Your Dues Online, 24/7 at www.ogca.com.

Select the “Pay Dues Here” link. Visa, Master Card, or Discover.

Insurance, hall rental, paper, and just about everything we buy seems to go up every year. In order to keep our member-ship prices as low as possible we looked at numerous cost cutting options and have implemented those that we felt were fair, reasonable and with the least negative im-pact on the future of the association.

Newsletter Changes: As announced on page 2, simply folding the newsletter and reducing the number of editions from 6 to 4 per year will help save thousands of dol-lars in postage and printing ever year. We are now moving into a seasonal newsletter format (fall, winter, spring, summer) but will still have 6 total mailings per year so that Applicants can be reviewed, screened and voted in on a timely basis.

Annual Dues Statement: Your next OGCA mailing will be one of two yearly interim

mailings and will include only the Septem-ber applicant list, Annual Dues Statement and a reminder of the November meeting. Therefore, please keep an eye out for your 2016 Annual Dues Statement to arrive in a small envelope in mid to late October. If your 2016 dues are due please pay by 12/31/15 so that we may avoid the cost of sending out a postcard reminder.

Life Dues Price Increase: We have not increased the price of Life Memberships in fourteen years - since 2001! We regret that both Life and Senior Life Dues must be increased $100 each this year. With this change will come a payment plan op-tion beginning in late October to be an-nounced on the Annual Dues Statement. The Life Membership increase will not be effective until October 1st for the benefit of the members who have long been “think-ing about it.” Life dues are as follows:

Life Membership: Paid by September 31st, $600. October 1st or later, $700.Senior Life (Age 65 and older): Paid by September 31st, $300. October 1st or later, $400. (Enclose proof of age for Senior Life.).

No increase on Annual Dues:1-year dues: $401-year Active Duty Military: Free3-year dues: $95 (saves $15)5-year dues: $150 (saves $50)

Dues payments may be made at the Dues Desk in person at a meeting or mailed to the Business (allow 3-6 weeks for process-ing.)

Annual 2016 Tables will be on sale at the September and November meetings (and at any time by contacting the Business Of-fice for an Annual Table Application) for January 2016-November 2016. Cost is $420 per year per table ($70 per table x 6 regular Wilmington meetings). This is a great way to save $60 per year, per table on table rent as the price for individual ta-

bles starting January 2016 will increase to $80 (see pg. 2). It is also a convenient way to reserve a table for the whole year!

Also, due to the newsletter changes men-tioned above, members may now reserve tables for up to two shows at a time. This can be done via mail or in person during a meeting for the next 2 meetings.

Simply check the box at the top of page 13 for which show or shows for which you are reserving tables. We can also email the Table Application to any member at their request. If you would like to be added to the “table application email list” just call, fax or email and we will email the form about 5-6 weeks prior to each meeting.

iMPortAnt sAFetY reMindersFor everyone’s safety, observe all federal fire-arms laws, and safety rules of OGCA. Every firearm accident is avoidable and below are some of the most important rules to know be-fore you go. We want everyone to enjoy their visit.

No loaded clips. NO LOADED or PRIMED • guns or air guns on the premises. This in-cludes CCWs.

Unload, deactivate, remove clips and • magazines before you leave home.

All firearms/airguns must be tied. (Gun • ties are available at the Gun Tie desk. $.05 each or 20 for $1.00. No one will be denied if you do not have the change.)

All firearms brought to the meeting • hall must be presented at the Gun Tie Desk located at the entrance. If

any firearms are taken out of the hall and return, it must be REINSPECT-ED and RETIED at the Gun Tie Desk.

The OGCA Past Presi-dents’ Council would like to thank our friends at The Roberts Centre for their help in planting a tree and installing a permanent plaque in memory of Past President and Treasurer Emeritus, Thomas L. Kyser. Tom served on the Board of Directors for 28 years in-cluding as president in the mid 1990’s, club historian,

and as treasurer from 1999 until his passing August 30, 2014. Among

those that attended the May 30th ceremo-ny were OGCA past presidents, numerous

Robert Centre representa-tives and his wife, Carole, of 48 years. The ceremony took place during our dis-play show weekend which is a program that was al-ways close to his heart. All members are encouraged to visit this beautiful, living memorial located in front of the convention center.
