Today we are going to start our new unit on Vocabulary. Think about why we study vocabulary in school; what benefits does it have? Also, think about vocabulary you have studied in years past—what kinds of activities have you found that are most effective in helping you learn new words—and also about activities that don’t help you learn these new words. Explain your answer.

Purpose: • To help visualize the “parts” of the word
Assignment: • Create a Illustrated Word Part on a ½ sheet of paper
Example:

Directions: 1. Take out sheet of paper; tear in half horizontally
(hamburger) 2. Write the root of the word in capital letters in the middle.
– Write the meaning of the root and the language of its origin.
3. Write the prefix to the left of the root. – Write the meaning of the prefix.
4. Write the suffix to the right of the root. – Write the meaning of the suffix.
5. In the lower left corner, write three words with the same root.
6. Make a visual in the lower section. 7. Write the dictionary definition on back of paper.

Directions: Music starts, take ½ sheet and move around the room. Music stops, nearest person is your partner. Determine partner A/B
Partner A: Show your Partner B your paper. Have them guess what your word means based on your visual, prefixes, roots, and suffixes.
After 60 seconds, we will switch. Partner B: Show your Partner A your paper. Have them guess what
your word means based on your visual, prefixes, roots, and suffixes.
Repeat until Hampton calls time.
