A Look at Human Trafficking in Texas Sunday, Sept. 10 9 a.m. Room 201, Adult Education Building

Did you know there are more than 300,000 victims of human trafficking in Texas? Almost 80,000 of the victims are minors and youth and forced into sex trafficking. There is a surge of sex trafficking in Austin during our festivals such as SXSW.

What can we do about this?

Find out when Corinne Weisgerber from the Oak Hill UMC Human Trafficking Committee speaks to the B.A.S.I.C. Sunday School class at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 10. She will discuss what trafficking looks like in Texas and review some of the programs around the state that are trying to address this horrific problem. We will discuss the challenges the committee is having and brainstorm on ways in which we can help.

UMW Mary Martha Circle Meets Sept. 11 Monday, Sept. 11 11:15 a.m. Fellowship Hall

Mary Martha Circle invites the ladies of Oak Hill UMC to join us for our first meeting of the fall season at 11:15 a.m. Monday, Sept. 11, for lunch and a presentation by Dress for Success Director Judy Chambers. Let’s show Judy that the Oak Hill UMW cares about women of Austin who are trying so hard to make their lives better. Contact Myra Allison at (512) 394-9047 if you have questions. Come for lunch and be inspired!

Page 3: SEPT. 1, 2017 - Oak Hill UMC

Special Note: Our speaker has requested that we can help Dress for Success during this time of special needs for our flood victim friends along the coast. Judy says that they need “new, unopened basic toiletries for female refugees from Houston who are here in Austin. They are collecting men’s toiletries and new white socks for the Dress for Success affiliate in Corpus Christi. Because of severe damage the Corpus Christi affiliate is not open to serve clients for some time, so in the meantime Dress for Success in Corpus is in need of toiletries for men and socks for first responders and those who’ve traveled to Corpus to help the victims.” The Austin Dress for Success is in need of unused, of course, makeup items such as mascara, eye shadow, blush and moisturizer; and professional handbags, especially black, brown, and navy for these ladies who are going on interviews and into the workplace. If you can help, bring these items to the Mary Martha Circle meeting or mark these items for Dress for Success and leave them in Fellowship Hall for our meeting on Monday, Sept. 11. •••

UMW Wednesday Morning Study Group Begins Sept. 13Wednesday, Sept. 1310 a.m.Room 206, Adult Education Building

All are welcome! The United Methodist Women (UMW) will resume Wednesday morning studies Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. in Room 206 of the Adult Education Building. The first study is “The Wesley Challenge” with Jeannine Inbody leading, and it will continue through Sept. 20 and 27.

“The Wesley Challenge” is about going beyond words to develop the spiritual habits, practices, and actions that can lead toward a thriv-ing Christian life. Using the 21 questions developed by John and Charles Wesley, you’ll be challenged to work with one question a day for 21 days. For each question you’ll receive a few practical ideas to help you develop a healthy, sustainable rhythm of faithful Christian living.

With fast-paced emphasis on graphics and short content bits, “The Wesley Challenge” will inspire us to a new kind of commitment—one that is more authentic, vulnerable, and soul shaping, resulting in a renewed passion to discover deeper levels of commitment to God and others.

If you would like to participate, and would like to order a book, please contact Gail Jones at [email protected] or call her at (512) 906-0790. Cost of the book is $10, and the deadline to order is Sept. 3.

David Saltzman and Amy Loar joined Oak Hill UMC by transfer of membership from a local United Methodist Church at our 11:15 a.m. service Aug. 27. Welcome!

Introducing the “2017 Methodist Build” Home The house in the photo, located at 306 Martin Luther King Dr. in Bastrop, is known as the 2017 Methodist Build. It was completed June 3 and dedicated a week later. About 10 Methodist churches in Austin, including Oak Hill UMC, join in odd years to construct a Habitat house. The cost for materi-als and contracted services is $85,000, with each church contributing 10 percent, or $8,500. Members of Oak Hill UMC contributed $6,713, Community Ministries contributed $500, and the Methodist Men contributed $1,287 (from their annual barbecue) to meet the $8,500. Thank you for your generosity. The owner of the home is Tina Leal, whose family has lived in the Austin and Bastrop areas for more than 100 years. Her late husband, a U.S. Army veteran, planned to participate in the Habitat program. Tina is a first-time home owner. Previously Tina and her 21-year old son shared a one-bedroom duplex with their dog in South Austin. She slept on a recliner while her son slept in the bedroom. Both have special needs, and adaptions were made to accommodate them. Thanks again to everyone who gave their support! — Ernie Rebuck

Have you ever been to a worship service where the sound wasn’t working or the projected song lyrics were off or altogether absent? For every single worship service, we need at least two volunteers to run the technical side of worship; that’s six people every week! Whether you have experience or not, if you’re willing we can train you. Contact Evan Ingersoll at [email protected].

Audio/Visual Help Is Needed

A few years ago Oak Hill UMC participated in a large campaign to supply malaria nets in Sierra Leone. Many nonprofits from around the world have pitched in to help end the spread of malaria in Africa. There have been more than 1 billion nets distributed throughout Africa. According to the Gates Foundation, the spread of malaria has been cut in half. This is great news, but there is more work to be done. Sierra Leone was hit very hard with ebola a few years ago, so malaria efforts were not a priority for the country. Our friends in Sierra Leone are just now recovering from the ebola epidemic. Within the past two weeks the capital city of Freetown was hit by another disaster. The area has had heavy rain; one portion of the city suffered a major mudslide, with many other mudslides occurring along the runoff area. The death toll is close to 500, with another 600-800 people still missing. Thousands are without a home. We are reaching out to our friends and contacts to see how they were impact-ed, but so far we have no news. Our good friend and church member, Saffa Koroma, tells us that his friends and family are safe. The mud slide occurred in the southern part of town. The Kissy area (where we have sent teams from Oak Hill UMC) did not have mud slides but have been impacted by the rain.

Fortunately, the United Methodist Church in Sierra Leone is doing its part in the recovery. Consider making a contribution to the Meth-odist Disaster Response Fund to help the relief efforts. If you make a contribution, there is a way to credit Oak Hill UMC. Go to http://www.umcmission.org/Give-to-Mission/Search-for-Projects/Projects/982450.
