Dear Student As part of this tutorial letter, we wish to inform you that Unisa has implemented a transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response to this charter, we have also placed curriculum transformation high on the agenda. For your information, curriculum transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be integrated at both the programme and module levels, as a phased-in approach. You will notice the implementation thereof in your modules, and we encourage you to fully embrace these changes during your studies at Unisa 1 INTRODUCTION My name is Mr Tebogo Banda, your lecturer for the module Integrated Security Risk Project Management: SEP3702. I am pleased to welcome you to this module and hope that you will find it both interesting and rewarding. I will do my best to make your study of this module successful. We would also like to congratulate you on your decision to empower yourself by studying towards an academic, tertiary qualification in the field of Security Management. We will do everything we can to help you achieve your academic and career goals. A special word of welcome is extended to all our new students who may be studying at Unisa for the first time. You may be a little nervous, but please remember that you have a dedicated team ready to assist you. Studying at Unisa can be fun and enjoyable – but it also requires commitment and discipline from your side. We have a highly motivated and committed academic team who are available to assist you with any queries for the specific modules you have registered in this academic year. We would like to encourage you to contact your lecturers directly and get to know them. Please feel free to contact the Programme Co-ordinator and/or the Chair of the Department directly if you have not been assisted in terms of any academic queries pertaining to your registered modules. Tutorial matter

Information supplied for the module will include tutorial matter such as the following:

Tutorial Letters 101, 201 and 301

Tutorial Letter SCHJALL/301/4/2020

study guide (Please note: Your study guide for this subject is Integrated Security Risk Project Management. The guide reflects the module code SEP3702. You will use this study guide for the duration of the semester in which you register. Some of the tutorial matter may not be available when you register. This tutorial matter will be posted to you as soon as possible, but is also available on myUnisa. You will succeed in your studies if you start studying early in the semester, do the assignments carefully and diligently by paying attention to what the assignment questions ask you to do, and submit the assignments before the due dates. You will receive a number of tutorial letters during the year. A tutorial letter is our way of communicating with you about teaching, learning and assessment matters. Tutorial Letter 101 contains important information about the scheme of work, resources and assignments for this module (SEP3702). I urge you to read it carefully and to keep it at hand when working through the study material, preparing the assignments, preparing for the examination and addressing questions to me.

In this tutorial letter, you will find the assignments and assessment criteria as well as instructions on the preparation and submission of the assignments. This tutorial letter also provides all the information you need on the recommended study material and other resources and how to obtain or access them. Please study the information contained in this tutorial letter carefully. I have also included certain general and administrative information of which you need to take note. Tutorial Letter 301 is a general tutorial letter that includes other important information regarding your studies. SCHJALL/301/4/2020 is the tutorial letter for all departments in the School of Criminal Justice containing the standardised referencing style and notes on plagiarism. Read them in combination with Tutorial Letter 101, since they contain important general information about distance learning and within a particular college. Your general tutorial letter (301) should be viewed as an operational or academic manual. It contains valuable information that is aimed at assisting you in completing your studies in Security Management at Unisa successfully. It is a very important tutorial letter and you should study it very carefully before you even begin your studies. You will be required to refer to it continually until you obtain your Diploma in Security Management. Your attention is also drawn to the importance of myUnisa and regular use of the internet. You must be registered on myUnisa to be able to submit assignments, have access to the Library functions, download study material, “chat” to the lecturers or fellow students, participate in online discussion forums and get access to all sorts of learning resources. I hope that you will enjoy this module and wish you all the best! 2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES 2.1 Purpose The purpose of this module is to provide you with a well-rounded and systematic knowledge base, by giving a detailed explanation of integrated security risk project management. This will allow you to apply fundamentals of project management, academic and professional discourse on the calculation of return on investment and the knowledge and skills to write and structure a comprehensive security risk management report. A person accredited with this module should be able to demonstrate a coherent and critical understanding of the importance of integrated security risk project management. 2.2 Outcomes Outcome 1 Equip you with the values, knowledge and skills to identify and demonstrate a coherent and critical understanding of the theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of project management (parts 1 & 2). Outcome 2 Conduct an academic and professional discourse on the calculation of return on investment (ROI) and its benefits. Outcome 3 Equip you with the values, knowledge and skills to write and compile a coherent and structured security risk management report to top management.

Details concerning the time, date and venue will be communicated to you via SMS when these are fixed and confirmed. 5.2 Information on tutorial offerings at Unisa Note that Unisa offers online tutorials (e-tutoring) to students registered for certain modules at NQF levels 5, 6 and 7. This means qualifying first-year, second-year and third-year modules. Please communicate with your module leader to find out if any of the modules that you have registered for fall into this category. Once you have been registered for a qualifying module, you will be allocated to a group of students with whom you will be interacting during the tuition period, as well as an e-tutor who will be your tutorial facilitator. Then you will receive an SMS informing you about your group, the name of your e-tutor and instructions on how to log onto myUnisa in order to receive further information on the e-tutoring process. Online tutorials are conducted by qualified e-tutors appointed by Unisa and are offered free of charge. All you need to be able to participate in e-tutoring is a computer or other device with internet connection. If you live close to a Unisa regional centre or a telecentre contracted by Unisa, please feel free to visit any of these to access the internet. E-tutoring takes place on myUnisa where you are expected to connect with other students in your allocated group. It is the role of the e-tutor to guide you through your study material during this interaction process. For you to get the most out of online tutoring, you need to participate in the online discussions that the e-tutor will be facilitating. There are modules, which students have been found to fail repeatedly; these modules are allocated face-to-face tutors and tutorials for these modules take place at the Unisa regional centres. These tutorials are also offered free of charge, but it is important for you to register at your nearest Unisa regional centre to secure attendance of these classes.

5.3 myUnisa If you have access to a computer or other device that is linked to the internet, you can quickly access resources and information at the university. The myUnisa learning management system is Unisa’s online campus that will help you to communicate via the internet with your lecturers, other students and the administrative departments in Unisa. To go to the myUnisa website, start at the main Unisa website, http://www.unisa.ac.za, and then click on the Login to myUnisa link on the right-hand side of the screen. This should take you to the myUnisa website. You can also access this website directly by typing in http://my.unisa.ac.za. Consult the publication Study@Unisa, which you received with your study material, for more information about myUnisa. During the year, other administrative departments and I may make contact with you via e-mail in order to provide you with important information. It is therefore important that you register on myUnisa and make use of your free myLife e-mail account (i.e. your own Unisa student e-mail address). You can claim your e-mail account by doing the following:

1. Go to myUnisa at http://my.unisa.ac.za and click on the Claim myLife e-mail link. 2. Provide your details by completing the e-form on the screen. This is done for verification

purposes. 3. You will then receive your myLife e-mail address and password. 4. Access your e-mail account.

Remember to check your myLife e-mail frequently, as it will be your responsibility to manage your myLife e-mail account. Note that your myLife e-mail address will be the only official means of electronic communication between Unisa and you. myLife is a web-based e-mail service, which means that you can access your e-mail from anywhere in the world using an internet browser. Use the link http://www.outlook.com, your myLife ID ([email protected]) and your password. All queries that are not of a purely administrative nature but are about the content of this module should be directed to me telephonically, by e-mail or through myUnisa, using your module website. Please have your study material with you when you contact me. 5.4 Free computer and internet access Unisa has entered into partnerships with establishments (referred to as telecentres) in various locations across South Africa to enable you (as a Unisa student) free access to computers and the internet. This access enables you to conduct the following academic-related activities: registration, online submission of assignments, engaging in e-tutoring activities and signature courses, etc. Note that any other activity outside of these are for your own cost, e.g. printing, photocopying. For more information on the telecentre nearest to you, visit www.unisa.ac.za/telecentres. 6 STUDY PLAN Use your Study@Unisa brochure for general time management and planning skills. 7 PRACTICAL WORK There are no practicals for this module.

8 ASSESSMENT 8.1 Assessment criteria The marks obtained in the two compulsory assignments will be regarded as a year mark, which is also known as the examination admission mark. The year mark composition for Assignments 01 and 02 will be 30% and 70%, respectively. The final mark composition will consist of a combined total mark of 20% (year mark) and 80% (examination mark). 8.2 Assessment plan The assessment plan for this module consists of two compulsory assignments, one self- assessment assignment and a 2-hour closed-book examination. The self-assessment Assignment 03 is a written assignment, which you must complete and mark yourself. Use your study guide to mark this assignment and you may contact me if you experience any problems with any of the questions. Although this assignment is not compulsory and will not contribute to the year mark, I advise you to complete the assignment to assist with preparation for the final examination. Markers of Assignment 02 will comment constructively on your work. In addition, feedback on compulsory assignments will be sent to all students registered for this module in a feedback tutorial letter (201) (sent out after the due date and well before the exams). The assignments and the feedback on these assignments constitute an important part of your studies and should help you to be better prepared for future assignments and for the examination. 8.3 Assignment numbers 8.3.1 General assignment numbers Assignment 01: Multiple-choice questions (MCQs) – compulsory Assignment 02: Written assignment – compulsory Assignment 03: Self-assessment assignment 8.3.2 Unique assignment numbers You will have received unique numbers together with your proof of registration. These numbers differ from your student number and subject codes. You need these unique numbers to complete your mark-reading sheet and to submit your written assignment. Note that your unique numbers are as follows: SEMESTER 1/2020 Assignment 01 unique number: 586081 Assignment 02 unique number: 781526 SEMESTER 2/2020 Assignment 01 unique number: 677967 Assignment 02 unique number: 821607 Fill in the unique number on the cover of your assignment.

8.4 Assignment due dates The due dates for the submission of the compulsory assignments are as follows: SEMESTER 1/2020 ASSIGNMENT 01 24 March 2020 ASSIGNMENT 02: 24 April 2020 SEMESTER 2/2020 ASSIGNMENT 01: 25 August 2020 ASSIGNMENT 02: 25 September 2020 ** Please make sure that your assignments reach Unisa on or before the respective due dates. 8.5 Submission of assignments

You must submit two compulsory assignments (Assignments 01 and 02) for assessment during the

semester in which you are registered for this specific module. Make sure that you are answering the correct assignments, that is, the assignments set for the semester for which you are registered. If you answer the incorrect assignment, you will not be allowed to correct your mistake (i.e. resubmit the correct assignment), and you will thus fail the assignment. If you do not submit the assignments, you will not be allowed to write the exam. PLEASE TAKE SPECIAL NOTE THAT the university is very strict on late submissions and NO EXTENSIONS will be granted other than for exceptional unavoidable circumstances (e.g. hospitalisation, prolonged sickness – proof to be provided by means of a doctor’s certificate BEFORE the due date and not after the fact). If you have what you think are valid reasons (being very busy at work does not qualify in this instance, nor does a funeral), you may request an extension for Assignment 02 by sending a fax to the department (marked for my attention by name AND the module code for which extension is being requested) or an e-mail to me. In this letter you will have to give the reason(s) for requesting an extension (also indicate for which module) and all your contact details. In addition, all supporting documentation needs to be attached to the request letter. The letter and supporting documentation will then be given to the Programme Head: Security Management, Department of Criminology and Security Science, who will decide whether the reason(s) is/are valid and whether the extension will be granted. Extensions are generally only given for a period of one week or a maximum of two weeks from the due date. The extension letter – if granted (signed by the Programme Head: Security Management) – must be enclosed in the same envelope as the late submitted assignment. REMEMBER, any assignment extensions MUST be requested BEFORE the due date! In other words, the application must not be done on or after the due date has already passed. You may submit written assignments and assignments completed on mark-reading sheets either by post or mobile MCQ submission or electronically via myUnisa. Assignments may NOT be submitted by fax or e-mail.

For detailed information and requirements concerning assignments, see the brochure Study@Unisa, which you received with your study package. To submit an assignment via myUnisa:

Go to myUnisa.

Log in with your student number and password.

Select the module.

Click on Assignments in the left-hand menu.

Click on the assignment number you want to submit.

Follow the instructions on the screen. Note: Although students may work together when preparing assignments, each student must write and submit his or her own individual assignment. In other words, you must submit your own ideas in your own words, sometimes interspersing relevant short quotations that are properly referenced. It is unacceptable for students to submit identical assignments on the basis that they worked together. That is copying (a form of plagiarism) and none of these assignments will be marked. Furthermore, you may be penalised or subjected to disciplinary proceedings by the university. Instructions for Assignment 01 (semesters 1 and 2) You only have to mark the corresponding number on your mark-reading sheet regarding each of the 20 questions. Please make sure that you mark only one correct answer per question. If you mark two numbers on your mark-reading sheet, the answer will be marked as wrong. Make sure that you answer all 20 questions in the way I have just explained. The answers to these questions can be found in your study guide. Instructions for Assignment 02 (semesters 1 and 2) Read the instructions below carefully before starting Assignment 02.

Try to collect relevant cuttings of newspaper articles or download relevant journal articles (from the Unisa Library e-journals website) in order to support one or more of your answers (if applicable). Do not attach the hardcopy newspaper articles; you must extract and paraphrase relevant information contained in the articles and incorporate this information in your answer(s) (see TL SCHJALL/301/4/2020 on how to do this properly). If you do utilise this information, remember to reference it correctly in accordance with the referencing guidelines in SCHJALL/301/4/2020.

Do not copy word-for-word from your study guide. Try to supply practical examples (if possible from your own work experiences) in support of the theoretical facts.

Keep the following in mind:

This is your second compulsory assignment. Start doing it as soon as you have completed your first assignment.

Additional marks You will be able to obtain up to 10 additional marks for your assignment by

following the correct presentation of a long/essay question

using the correct reference method in your assignment (see TL SCHJALL/301/4/2020)

including a title page and a table of contents for your assignment (on separate pages)

including a list of references at the end of the assignment

referring to the source of information (reference) at the end of EACH ANSWER, for example (Rogers, 2010:57)

using headings and sub-headings in your assignment, especially for the long essay-type question

using and referencing additional sources used in the assignment HOW TO APPROACH THE ASSIGNMENT 02 QUESTIONS? Because you are students at a tertiary institution, I expect you to do independent research (collecting information on this subject) and then produce work of a high standard. This also means that you have to DO EXTRA READING (research the specific topics and collect information relevant to the assignment questions) other than just reading through your study guide. Your answers should also NOT merely be a repetition word-for-word of the material in the study guide (in other words, avoid plagiarism). You should

Page 12: SEP3702 - exampreparation.co.za · Mrs Judith Motha (Admin Officer) 012 433 9475 (maponjm1@unisa.ac.za) Ms Z Skhosana (secretary) 012 433 9434 (Skhoszp@unisa.ac.za) Letters should

be including information from different sources and paraphrase, in your own words, the information and add your own analysis and interpretation to the facts provided in the information collected. All information used (including from the study guide) MUST be properly referenced. NB: For additional guidance on how to approach and answer the assignment questions, read Tutorial Letter 301. The essay question Have another look at Tutorial Letter 301 (“How to complete a long assignment question”) when you are answering your second assignment. Basically, the point of an essay-type question is to answer the question within a specific structure (using a more detailed discussion of information in the text of your answer; if asked to “discuss”, DO NOT merely list the points). An essay requires the following standard structure:

1. a title page (on a separate page) 2. a table of contents (with page numbers for each section or heading on a separate page) 3. an introduction (on a new page) 4. definitions (where you will define terms relevant to the essay topic) 5. a body (where you discuss the main information under different headings where applicable – i.e.

you must discuss what the question is asking) 6. a conclusion (summarise your main findings and wrap up the discussion with a concluding

statement) 7. a list of references or a bibliography (list the publications, including books, articles, reports, website

addresses – e-information or an e-publication listed on a specific website – and so on where you obtained the information you used in answering the essay question)
