1. You are #1 As difficult as it may be, you must take care of yourown physical and emotional needs first. Eat healthymeals, get sufficient rest, take time for yourself, exercise, and ensureyou schedule yourown preventativecare appointments.Maintain yourfriendships and gethelp immediately ifyou are feelingoverwhelmed, angry, and depressed, orare using prescriptiondrugs or alcohol tocope.

Family rituals, meditation, andprayer can generateinner peace – andboost the immune system!

2. There is no “one” way to provide careEach caregiving situation is different; each caregiverand care recipient is unique. Caregiving may involvedriving to appointments or it may involve around-the-clock, hands-on care. No one person can do it all andno one way is the only way.

3. Your safety and the safety of the care recipient are of utmostimportance Learn to recognize when your loved one is no longerable to live independently. Learn how to deliverphysical care safely. If you cannot physically help yourloved one in a safe manner, let someone else do it.

4. Know your enemyEducate yourself about your loved one’s disease.Routinely reassess your loved one’s needs and yourability to provide care.

5. Plan ahead for medical, legal &financial issuesTalking together is the single most important thingthat a family can do when they care for and plan for

the end of life for someone they love. Do you knowwhere to find financial information and otherimportant documents (Maryland MOLST, AdvanceDirective)? Do you know who the designated Medicaland Legal Powers of Attorney are?

6. Ask forhelpSpecifically identifythe care and helpneeded and call afamily meeting.Have a writtenagenda andinformation fromphysicians, casemanagers, etc. Ifothers are unableto help with thehands-on care, canthey contributefinancially so that

you can hire respite care; can they prepare somemeals or help with yard work, transportation toappointments, or manage finances?

7. Accept helpKeep a list of tasks that would be helpful (walking thedog, cutting the grass, preparing a dinner, errands). When someone offers to help, show them the list andlet them pick what they can do.

8. Contact your employer aboutemployee assistance programsMany employers understand the benefits of providingassistance and resources to family caregivers. It’s justgood business!

9. Contact your local Area Agency onAging (AAA)In Anne Arundel County, call 410-222-4257 forInformation and Assistance.

10. Identify a support systemMaintain your friendships and stay in touch withfamily members. Locate caregiver support groups inyour community or on-line. If needed, seekprofessional support from your doctor or a therapist/counselor who understands caregiver stress.
