Pastoral Leadership

May / June 20104

For the first three hundred years of the Christian faith, followers of Christ had little alternative but to stay close to Jesus, live in a vital love relationship with Him, and cling to each other for mutual encouragement and support. They were persecuted by local and national govern-ments and fearful every day for their lives.

Church leaders from that period, like Tertullian of Carthage (160 AD), are an example of the emphasis on true discipleship. He constantly wrote to the churches of his day calling for Christians to live holy lives, separating themselves from the practices and values of their

pagan culture. Ignatius of Antioch (117 AD) wrote, “I am the wheat of God, and let me be ground up by the teeth of wild beasts, that I may be found the pure bread of Christ…then shall I be a true disciple of Christ.”

Then, around 322 AD, the worst thing that could happen, happened to the Church of Jesus Christ. Christianity became a popular movement in the Roman Empire. Constantine the Great, the emperor, officially recognized Christianity as the state-sponsored religion of the empire. And when once Christianity became part of main-stream culture it had to do everything in its power to maintain that place of popular-ity, even if it meant compromising the truth of the Gospel.

Rodney Clapp, in his book, A Peculiar People, writes of this period of history that, “the ethical requirements of the Church were adapted to the level of what might be called ‘respectable unbelief.’”

by Pastor Alec Rowlands

5May / June 2010

This author captures an accurate assess-ment of the condition of most of the churches in America today in this quote from his book, “The question was no longer ‘How can we survive and remain faithful Christians under Caesar?’, but now becomes, ‘How can we adjust the church’s expectations so that Caesar can consider himself a faithful Christian?’”

Eddie Gibbs, author of a book entitled, In Name Only, says that the Christian Church today is “full of people who want to be known as Christians, but who no longer accept the basic beliefs of Christianity, are living lifestyles incom-patible with the values of the kingdom, and are not maintaining an ongoing relationship with the Lord.”

Faith without works is going to be the demise of Christianity in our genera-tion unless we have a spiritual awaken-ing in this nation. We have people who say they have saving faith but are being unfaithful to their marriage vows without much conviction or concern. We have churches full of people who think the Ten Commandments are outdated and more like ten guidelines. We have churches in America that have no concern at all about those who are without Christ and are so afraid of offending that they have hidden the true demands of the Gospel.

The Apostle James saw the tell tale signs of this malady in the early church, and wrote, “Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?” Then a few verses later, he writes, “You see that a man is justified by works...” On the sur-

face this looks like a direct contradiction to Paul’s teaching on faith. In Ephesians 2:8-9, Paul writes, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

In reality there is no contradiction be-tween Paul and James. The problem is that in common Christian usage the word faith has come to mean an intellectual assent to a set of doctrinal propositions about Jesus, the cross, and salvation. No expectations of a transformed life. No expectations that sinful behaviors will be crucified and fall away. No expectations of holy attitudes, holy character or holy conduct. Just faith and poof, your sins are forgiven, you are going to go to heaven, and nothing can alter your eternal destiny.

In reality, no such faith existed in Paul’s theology and James certainly leaves no room for this kind of faith in the verses we are going to examine today. When Paul uses the word, faith, he fully intends that it is a faith that has immedi-ate and life-long ramifications concerning the Christian living a life of practical holi-ness. When James uses the word, works, he fully intends that it is a works that is birthed in and inseparable from the faith that saves.

We have made the distinction between faith and works to our own peril and the peril of the Gospel in our day. James and Paul did not make that distinction! James holds up the mirror of God’s Word to show you and me a faith that works!

Emergency ServicesDirector of Emergency Services: Rita Miller Emergency Services is Westgate Chapel’s critical first response to the practical needs of the community. It is an expression of the Father’s heart to those that are in desperate need of a touch of His grace.

Leadership Transition• On March 30, the Westgate Staff said farewell to

Margaret Smith, who had served as the Director of Emergency Services for the past five (5) years.

• On April 1, Rita Miller began her ministry as Director of Emergency Services and newest member of our Re-gional Mission’s Staff.

• From Janette: Regional Missions Administrator “We will truly miss Margaret and her heart for those

that are so broken. In preparation for our new direc-tor, Rita Miller, Margaret has taken extra care in train-ing and administrative set-up to make the transition smooth. We are so grateful Margaret will still be a big part of the Westgate family.”

Food BankThe following data reflects the ministry of the Food Bank throughout March 2010:• Households served ................................................ 343• Individuals served ............................................... 1214• Pounds of food distributed .............................. .14,086• Volunteers in ministry ............................................. 32• Hours volunteers served ........................................ 305• Fresh produce purchased ............................... $317.35

Financial Assistance• Total monies disbursed ................................... $304.80

Note from Margaret“It has been a privilege serving the Lord in Emergency Services. I rejoice in all the Lord has accomplished for His glory. I carry the ministry in my heart and prayers.”

Increase Participation from WestgateThe number of people in our congregation desiring to help in the food bank has increased. We have two new people helping this month. I think the Lord is putting the desire in people’s hearts to serve.

Throughout the past the two years, it has been my privilege to share a Regional Missions report in

the monthly meeting of the Board of Elder and Deacons.

In February of this year, one of our deacons commented at the conclusion of the report that he had

been at Westgate many years, and was unaware of the scope of Westgate’s mission to our region.

He further commented that he believed there were many in the Westgate community who would

value information and would like to see the report in the Westgate Window. The following is the

April 2010 Regional Missions Board Report.

Forest Messenger Testimony“It’s 8 am and I heard a thud and scream outside my of-fice. Someone had been hit by a minivan outside. The Lord reminded me that when I had a bicycle accident that left me temporarily paralyzed, two men came out of nowhere to pray over me. He told me to go and pray over her.

The woman was badly injured. I reached toward her and boldly prayed out loud in the name of Jesus for her heal-ing and salvation. When I got back to my office I heard the Holy Spirit say, “You may not have saved her life, but she could have heard in that moment of her need to call on the Lord.”

Salt & LightTeam Leader: Lori Granberg Salt & Light exists to help Westgate Chapel believers be more effective agents in our areas of influence as we seek the Lord for a revival of Biblical righteousness. We desire to help Christians understand their civic responsibilities and the moral issues of the day so they will be equipped to positively influence the culture. Our strategy is to be watchmen on the walls, intercessors, and equippers of the ministry teams of Westgate Chapel.

Classes• TrueU concluded March 8 Events• National Day of Prayer – May 6 Featured Guest Speaker: Pat Stafford, mother of Pierce

County Deputy Sheriff, Kent Mundel. Officer Mundel was killed in the line of duty.

Issues UpdateOngoing Homeless Outreach Team Leaders: Brian Christopherson & John JacobWestgate Champel’s homeless outreach is a practical expression of the Isaiah 58 and Matthew 25 mandates by offering food and other practical help to the homeless of our region.

Second & Fourth Wednesday We handout sandwiches on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month. It has been difficult to locate the homeless during the winter since they go into “hiding.” The weather is better now and the team is able to locate them better and spend more time talking with them.

Interface with the New Heart NetworkDuring one of our last feedings, we came across several men by the Ballard Bridge who expressed interest some type of program to help them with their addictions. Now that Philadelphia Church has started their New Heart program we are able to encourage them to attend.

From the word I get on the streets, when a person goes into a rehab program and then comes out of rehab there are very few healing and recovery groups in the Ballard area to help support them and keep them from going back into their old ways.

Praise God for New Heart Ministries opening up. The tim-ing of God speaking to us to start the Homeless Outreach and leading Pastor Ron to help Philadelphia church start a New Heart Ministry is truly a miracle.

Please Pray for MarkThere is one man, Mark, whom I just spoke with who went into rehab for a month and then came back to Ballard and started drinking again because the tempta-tion was to strong and he told me he had no one to talk to about his problem. He recognizes he has a problem and wants to change but does not know where to turn to. I will talk to him about New Heart Place. So please pray for Mark.

Lives Are Slipping Into Eternity“Jeb” the very first person we gave a sandwich to died on the streets from a massive heart attack. We pray the gospel message became real to him. Please continue to lift up the Homeless Outreach as we come in contact with more and more of the homeless in the Ballard area and that God will lead us in every step that we take.

May / June 201010

Most of us are familiar with the scripture verse in John 8:32, “You shall know the Truth and the Truth will set you free.” In verse 36, we are told by Jesus that “if the Son makes you free, you are free INDEED!”

Have you wondered what it was, exactly, that Christ has set you free from, or free to do? Here are just a few “freedoms” to con-sider:• Romans8:7says,“Hewhohasdied[been

crucified with Christ] has been freed from sin!” AMAZING!

• Romans 6:18 says “having been freedfrom sin, [we] became slaves TO righ-teousness.”

• Galatians 3:28 says we are free from cultural, gender and ethnic prejudice.

• Galatians 5:13 says we have been freed from the reign of fleshy desires TO the realm of love (love of God; love of others).

2 Corinthians 3:17 states, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” I would like to suggest that this liberty, or freedom, is a celebration of lives being “called out of darkness and transferred into His won-

derful light.” (1 Peter 2:9) There is great rejoicing in heaven when one sinner repents and comes home to the Lord (Luke 15:10). There is “great rejoicing with joy inexpressible and full of glory” in those who believe in Him and love Him (1 Peter 1:8) because of the living hope we have in Christ.

Unrestrained, joyful abandonment, rejoic-ing, freedom from all things that have held us in the grip of sin and living death! Where the freedom of the Lord is there is full-heart-ed, unhindered worship. Just a foretaste of being with the Lord forever!

Come worship with us on Sunday, June 27, at 6 pm in the Sanctuary, as we gather for a Worship Night designed to celebrate the freedom we have in Jesus! We set aside these special nights for worship and more worship sometimes through personal testimony, sometimes in congregational worship and sometimes through special adult choir’s and orches-tra’s musical offerings of praise.

These evenings are extraordinary! God so faithfully “shows up!” Please be encour-aged to invite friends who need to be in His Presence, to experience the joy of the Lord, the FREEDOM that is in Him!

Thursday, Friday & Saturday | July 8, 9 & 10Cleaning out your home and garage this Spring? Donate your gently used items to the New Heart Place GIANT Yard Sale. Donations will be received at a later date but we want you to begin the process of spring cleaning now.

Last year, Tom Peterson and about 45 volunteers helped raise close to $14,000 with this event. Hundreds of people came through to shop! Many guests commented on how organized the sale was and that everyone seemed so happy. There was a real sense of God’s presence during this event.

Not only was the sale a blessing to New Heart Place, but at the end of the sale, we were able to donate:• Left over men’s clothing to Union Gospel Mission’s Mens Shelter• Left over baby clothes and toys to an unwed mother’s facility• Some items went to a yard sale for our youth going on Choir Tour• The rest went to Goodwill. The Goodwill store manager had to call more people in to work that day to handle the donations so we actually helped employ some people.

Where can you volunteer at this year’s sale? You can provide goods, volunteer to work at the sale, or just come to shop. Please save the date and plan to be a BIG part of another successful fundraiser for New Heart Place, our Men’s Residential Recovery & Discipleship Home.

Jesus stressed the importance of being water baptized when He commissioned His followers to baptize all those who dedicated their lives to Christ. “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 23:19-20

Water Baptism is more than just a religious experience. For Christians, baptism is the outward expression of an inward commitment to Christ. If you are a Christian and have not yet been water baptized by immersion, we encourage you to take this important step in your walk with the Lord.
