Educator’s Angle My son gets restless when his Rebbe is teaching and has trouble looking inside when they are reading Gemara. His Menahel suggested that we have him tested for ADD/ADHD. Could this be the source of his Kriah difficulties or are they separate issues?

Dear R’Avrohom

This question is quite common and must be addressed. Firstly it should be noted that ADD/ADHD is a medical diagnosis generally defined as a behavioral disorder characterized by a short attention span, poor concentration and personal organization, impulsivity, and in some cases hyperactivity. Any questions regarding medication should be directed towards a qualified medical practitioner.

When a student exhibits hyperactive behavior and poor concentration we need to look for possible causes of this behavior. Recently a Talmid came to me for a reading difficulty. During the evaluation his parents mentioned that they were exploring the possibility of ADHD. A bit surprised, I commented that their son had been sitting calmly for the past 45 minutes which would not be expected of a hyperactive child. I then proceeded to give him a page to read and almost instantly he was jumping around in his seat and glancing around the room. It was the visual strain of the reading which caused his jumpiness not the other way around. Another Talmid was very restless one day and needed to move around the room; behaviors he

had not shown in the past. I asked him if he had eaten supper and he told me he usually eats earlier but that evening he hadn’t yet eaten. His mother told me that he regularly skips breakfast on school days. When he made sure to eat consistently regular meals we saw tremendous improvement in his reading skills.

A recent study from Michigan St. University found that students born in the month before the school cutoff date (e.g. the cutoff date is Dec.1 students born in November) were over 60% more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD and were twice as likely as their peers to be given medication by the time they were in sixth grade. A likely cause for this is the subjective nature of this diagnosis which is based on the observations, not a blood test or a scan of the brain. Teachers are likely to compare a student to his peers and mis-label immaturity as hyperactivity. The fact that a student can maintain focus while on medication does not necessarily tell us that we have addressed the source of the issue because even accomplished professionals who take stimulants will see enhanced performance.

There are many factors which may contribute to your son’s Kriah difficulties and lack of focus in the classroom, lack of sleep, food allergies among others. It is crucial to properly diagnose and remediate all the issues in order to allow your son to reach his potential.
