y The ear is the organ that detects sound .

y

It not only acts as a receiver for sound, butplays a major role in the sense of balanceand body position.

y The ear is part of the auditory system .

y Audition is the scientific name for the sense of sound . Sound is a form of energy that moves throughair, water, and other matter, in waves of pressure.

y Sound is the means of auditory communication,

including frog calls, bird songs and spoken language. Although the ear is the vertebrate sense organ thatrecognizes sound, it is the brain and central nervoussystem that "hears".

y Sound waves are perceived by the brain through thefiring of nerve cells in the auditory portion of thecentral nervous system. The ear changes soundpressure waves from the outside world into a signal of nerve impulses sent to the brain.

y Ear is shown in the figure.

y It has 3 main parts.

1. Outer Ear2. Middle Ear3. Inner Ear

y There are 4 reasons why the ear get damaged.

1. Auricle2. Ear Canal3. Middle Ear Trauma4. Inner Ear Trauma

y

The auricle can be easily damaged. Because it is skin-coveredcartilage, with only a thin padding of connective tissue, rough handling of the ear can cause enough swelling to jeopardize the blood-supply to its framework, the auricularcartilage.

y Ear canal injuries can come from firecrackers and otherexplosives, and mechanical trauma from placement of foreign bodies into the ear. The ear canal is most often

self-traumatized from efforts at ear cleaning .

y L ike outer ear trauma, middle ear trauma most often comesfrom blast injuries and insertion of foreign objects into theear.

y Skull fractures that go through the part of the skullcontaining the ear structures (the temporal bone) can alsocause damage to the middle ear.

y There are two principal damage mechanisms to theinner ear in industrialized society, and both injure haircells. The first is exposure to elevated sound levels

(noise trauma), and the second is exposure to drugsand other substances ( ototoxicity ).

y Cochlear implantation is a technique to provideartificial hearing facility.

y Here the clear view of cochlear implantation is shown

in Video.

y BERA is an electro-physiological test procedure which studies the electrical potential generatedat the various levels of the auditory systemstarting from cochlea to cortex .

The Bera test gives approximate average hearingthreshold level of subject.

Done by click sound by which subjects averagehearing threshold across all frequencies can beautomatically access without subject having torespond.

y W hen the ear is damaged and do not work properly then in such cases Hearing Aid/Audiometer is used.

y This instrument functions same as the ear and makethe patient to hear the sound.

WORKING:--

y A h earing aid is an electro acoustic body wornapparatus which typically fits in or behind the wearer's ear, and is designed to amplify and modulatesound for the wearer. Earlier devices, known as an

"ear trumpet" or " ear horn ", were passive funnel-likeamplification cones designed to gather sound energy and direct it into the ear canal. Similar devicesinclude the bone anchored hearing aid , and cochlearimplant .

y From this seminar we can conclude that ear is a very delicate organ of our body.

y W e should not enter any pointed or sharp thing inside.y It may cause ear infection or ear damage.y W e can understand the causes why ear get damaged

and their solutions.
