In any government system, the best way a citizen can participate is by...

VOTING!

Page 46: Semester 1 Social Studies Review

Under a PRESIDENTIAL SYSTEM• There is a SEPARATION of

powers.

• The President is elected INDEPENDENTLY of the legislature.

• The head of the government is known as the President.

• Legislature is the law making body.

Page 47: Semester 1 Social Studies Review

Under a PARLIAMENTARY SYSTEM• Parliament IS the

lawmaking body.

• The executive power called the -

PRIME MINISTER– is a member of the majority party in Parliament, and stays in power ONLY as long as his/her party IS the majority party.

Page 48: Semester 1 Social Studies Review

How do governments distribute powers?

• Unitary –One central government controls

everything. – Power is not shared between

states, counties, or provinces. – Examples : United Kingdom, France,

the Netherlands, and Spain

Page 49: Semester 1 Social Studies Review

Confederation

• Individual states make their own laws and decisions.• Loosely aligned to a weak central

government.

Page 50: Semester 1 Social Studies Review

Federal

–Power is shared by a powerful central government.

–States or provinces are given considerable self rule, usually through their own legislatures.

Page 51: Semester 1 Social Studies Review

Federal RepublicBrazil & Mexico

A state in which the powers of the central government are restricted and in which the

component parts (states, colonies, or provinces) retain a degree of self-government;

ultimate power rests with the voters who chose their governmental representatives.

Page 52: Semester 1 Social Studies Review

DictatorshipsCuba

Page 55: Semester 1 Social Studies Review

The 3 Types of Economies

Traditional Economy

*What will be produced?

*How will it be produced?

*For whom will it be produced?

Command Economy

*What will be produced?

*How will it be produced?

*For whom will it be produced?

Market Economy

*What will be produced?

*How will it be produced?

*For whom will it be produced?

Page 56: Semester 1 Social Studies Review

Main Ideas of Economics

• Production- the act or process of being produced either by human or mechanical efforts; act of creating something of value by producing goods and services

• Consumption- the using up of goods and services by consumer purchasing or in the production of other goods

• Distribution- the process of marketing and supplying goods especially to retailers

Page 57: Semester 1 Social Studies Review

Factors of Production

• Natural Resources• Capital Resources• Labor Resources• Entrepreneurs

Page 58: Semester 1 Social Studies Review

Four Factors of Production-the resources needed to produce

goods and services• Natural resources- raw materials needed to make goods

(examples- land, water, forests, minerals, soil)• Labor resources- workers are needed with the right

amount of knowledge, skills, and experience to make goods or provide services

• Capital resources- machines, factories, supplies, and technology that are needed to make goods

• Entrepreneurs- the small business owners who take the risk of bringing land, labor and capital resources together to produce goods and services
