There were a number of outstanding individual per-

formances by our students in all divisions. Out of 67

competing ACC Schools representing over 48,000

students, we have had seven students qualify for

the ACC Honorary All Star Team and therefore

Sport Honours meaning they finished in the Top 2

students in Division I events across all Carnivals (A –

H), This is a superb achievement. Three students

missed out on this selection by a single placing,

meaning we were close to having ten students se-

lected. As ever, this continued success is due to a

number of intangible factors:

1. Students are regularly attending School train-ing demonstrating ‘Dedication & Hardwork’

2. Our ACC Squad students exhibit ‘Ambition’ to compete and excel in their events

3. Senior students can be relied to act as Sports Leaders who give guidance and advice to Junior students

4. The coaching and teaching received by our students from our PE Staff is of a high quality

5. Junior and Senior students can be relied upon as our ACC Squads are cohesive groups of talented sporting students who all contribute to the squads overall success

6. Students have individual specific goals, roles and responsibilities which they understand

7. Students are knowledgeable of the high standards associated with ACC Sport

HONORARY ALLSTAFF TEAM MEMBERS

Savannah Steinbach (OPEN Capt.) - 800m & 1500m This is the 4th consecutive year Savannah has qualified for the ACC Honorary All Star Team for both events high-

lighting Savannah’s consistency and commitment to training (Joondalup Track Club). This results in Savanah

achieving ACC Letters, the highest individual ACC Sporting Award possible, which she also attained earlier this

year for Cross Country. Savannah has been a superb advocate of School Sport during her time, as have a num-

ber of the Year 12 students who have truly set a legacy for younger students to aspire to .

LIAM VAN DER SPUY (U16 CAPT.) -100M HURDLES (ACC RECORD), 100M, 200M & 4 X 100M RELAY & OVERALL CHAMPION ACC U16 BOY This is also the 4th consecutive year Liam has been selected for the ACC Honorary All Star Team thereby achieving

ACC Letters, the highest individual ACC Sporting Award possible. This year he qualified for three individual events,

whilst setting a new ACC record in the Hurdles for the second consecutive year (records date back to 1937). He was

also named to the ACC U16 Boys 4x100m Relay Team. Not only was Liam ‘A’ Division Champion U16 Boy, but in

addition, Liam was the overall Champion U16 Boy across all divisions – an outstanding achievement, demonstrating

his consistency in the sprinting events. Liam also placed highly overall for both the Long Jump and 400m.

DELANEY SMITH (U16 CAPT.) - JAVELIN (ACC RECORD) & SHOT PUT

Delaney has now been selected for the ACC Honorary All Star Team four consecutive times since Year 7

meaning she will be our third student to achieve ACC Letters, the highest individual ACC Sporting Award pos-

sible. This year she qualified for two individual events, whilst setting a new ACC record in the Javelin and also

acting as Sports Leader to younger students.

CAITLIN CHASE (U15 CAPT.) - 100M & 4 X 100M RELAY TEAM

This is the first time Caitlin has been selected for the ACC Honorary All Star Team which is impressive for a

student in the U15 category and reflects Caitlin’s dedication to training and continued improvement in this

event. Caitlin has competed for the School every year since Year 7 and is a regular a School training sessions

exhibiting a superb work ethic and coachable attitude. Caitlin set a new personal best in the 100m whilst

running the fastest time across every single ACC Carnival against some very strong competition. We hope

Caitlin will act as a Sports Leader next year where she will assist coaching some of the younger students for

this specialist event.

MIA LOCKWOOD (U14) - 800M & 1500M

Having joined us from St. Mark’s, I believe this is the second consecutive year that Mia has been selected

for the ACC Honorary All Star Team. This year Mia qualified for both the 800m and 1500m running the fast-

est times across all ACC Divisional Carnivals for both events highlighting Mia’s consistency and commitment

to training.

MADISON KINGSTON (U13 CAPT.) - HIGH JUMP

Being in Year 7, this is obviously the first time Madison has qualified for the ACC All Star Team which bodes

well for the future. Madison set a new High Jump personal best in her favourite event and narrowly missed

out on setting a new ACC Record by just 3cm. She also placed very highly overall for the 200m, 400m, Long

Jump and was part of the successful U13 Girls 4x100m Relay Team. Madison was a committed member at

School training and was an integral contributor to the Champion Junior Girls category; she led by example

throughout the day.

TYLER PEDLEY (U13 CAPT.) - JAVELIN Being in Year 7, this is also the first time Tyler has qualified for the ACC All Star Team which bodes well for

the future. Tyler set a new Javelin personal best after a great attitude at training. She also placed very

highly overall for the 800m, 1500m, Discus and was part of the successful U13 Girls 4x100m Relay Team.

Tyler was an integral part of the ACC Athletics Squad and led by example throughout the day.

Peter Godwin (U13 Capt.), Lucy McCorkindale (U14) and Georgia Morgan (U15) are all highly deserving of special mention as they embrace our ACC Squad values of ‘Hardwork, Dedication and Ambition’ and are regular attendees at School training; however, they all missed out on the ACC Honorary All Star Team by just a single place in the 800m. The following students are also deserving of acknowledgment in addition as they finished in the Top 8 students overall (Division I & II combined) for their respective events listed thereby accruing points towards the School’s Overall Virtual Carnival Result:

U13 (Year 7) Taffy Nyirenda – ACC Athletics (Long Jump; 4 x 100m Relay Team) Peter Godwin – ACC Athletics (Squad Captain; 800m* & 1500m) Nicole Bothma – ACC Athletics (Javelin & Shot Put) Struan Horne – ACC Athletics (Hurdles) Georgia Mitchell – ACC Athletics (4 x 100m Relay Team)

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN SCHOOLS In the September Accredited Athletics Coach Newsletter, there was an interesting article about the value and importance of physi-cal activity within Schools. In an age where sedentary lifestyles are becoming more prevalent due to a variety of reasons, it is im-portant to remember the importance that physical activity plays in the growth, development and social aspect of children . . . Here are five reasons why we need promote and emphasise the importance that physical activity in our schools and how it can pos-itively affect our students: 1) Physical activity helps to enlarge your brain's basal ganglia which controls your ability to focus. We all know how hard it can be to focus at times and we are living in a day and age where a plethora of things are vying for our students' attention. Therefore, any measures we can put in place that will help our students to not just maintain their focus, but also enhance their focus, most cer-tainly will pay off when it comes to student learning. 2) Physical activity positively affects several vitally important areas of health. Steady amounts of physical activity will prevent obesity and will help to maintain proper levels of blood pressure. Additionally, physical activity will ensure students grow up with healthy bone structures as they continue their skeletal development. Finally, cholesterol levels will also be kept in-check with daily physical activity. As we all know, students who are physically healthy will be in school more often and absent less and will be better able to focus on their learning. 3) Physical activity helps you sleep and improves your overall sleep quality. When we get consistent and daily doses of exercise our sleeping experiences become higher quality. Since the physical body needs the nightly recharge more, the body is able to fall asleep faster and get into a 'deeper' level of sleep more quickly. Because of this, the quality of sleep goes up drastically and a class-room full of well-rested and recharged students will always perform better than a room full of tired and fatigued students. 4) Physical activity is a natural stress reliever. When we are stressed we are unable to focus as well and we become tired more easily due to struggles with sleeping. Additionally, we are less able to be patient and are much more susceptible to mood swings. When we get physical activity we are able to relieve and diminish these levels of stress which in turn will have several positive effects on our overall mental and physical health. Stressed students don't and can't learn, so let's ensure they have some outlets to keep the stress at a minimum. 5) Physical activity stimulates brain plasticity. Brain plasticity allows our brains to be more 'fluid' and 'mouldable' so to speak. When this happens, our brains are able to make new connections as well as able to strengthen existing connections. The more and stronger neuronal connections we have the better able we are to learn and retain information. This obviously has huge implica-tions for our students on how and when they learn.
