We offer a wide range of seeds including cereals, oilseeds, pulses and organics as well as forage crops and other small seeds. A select number of well-appointed suppliers are used to ensure we retain the highest quality product with a prompt and professional service. One such supplier Dunns (Long Sutton) Ltd – is 100% owned by Gleadell Agriculture and is a major UK agricultural seed wholesale company and specialist human consumption pulse processing business.
Gleadell are a market leader in aiding the development of new varieties which has gained support from the end users. This has created a link between the seed
breeders and the consumers which has enabled products to have suitable homes available once they are brought to the market.
This year our wheat end market suitability comments are kindly supplied by ADM Milling Ltd. ADM have for many years worked strategically with leading UK wheat breeders, evaluating pipeline material, to gain early understanding of milling and baking functionality in promising varieties. This has provided valuable commercial feedback at an earlier stage of the process, and led to greater confidence in new varieties as they achieve RL status.
Through our strategically located suppliers of cereal and pulses seed we aim to offer a consistent high quality and excellent standard of supply, whilst managing the risk of varietal performance due to unforeseen weather events in any given season.
Building on the success of last year’s catalogue – this year we hope to give further insight into the varieties and aid selection for your individual farm situation.

UK seed market share autumn 2015 plantings - 9.8%
Gleadell’s view - Now established as a versatile wheat variety on farm, Skyfall has been popular with the quality wheat grower and the feed grower alike. Skyfall is a bearded wheat but that’s not the only reason it stands out from the crowd. It has revolutionised the quality wheat market – bringing yield in line with the very popular feed wheats. Its combination of yield, quality and good all-round disease resistance including OWBM and Pch1 eyespot resistance makes it an exciting all-round package. Better suited for later sowings from the end of September onwards. End-market suitability - Good milling and baking performance has been seen from this variety in its first full season of availability. Given its high yield, effective protein management will be required to achieve consistency and full milling potential.

Gleadell’s view - KWS Trinity entered the group 1 sector last year, it is a high yielding group 1 variety with excellent disease resistance, short, stiff straw and mid-maturity. Trinity’s best performance is in the northern region, but on a par with Skyfall in the East.
End-market suitability - KWS Trinity joined the RL in 2015 and from the early commercial crops seen, has confirmed its status as a group 1 variety. We expect to see a larger volume this season and an effective protein management programme will be required to maximise its potential.

Gleadell’s view - Crusoe represented a step forward in terms of disease resistance from Gallant and Solstice. It is now outclassed in yield terms by Skyfall and KWS Trinity but its consistent quality and on-farm performance will mean it will see it remaining popular with growers.
End-market suitability - Although lower in yield than other bread wheats it is quickly becoming the quality ‘backbone’ due to its ability to produce high protein crops. Good crumb structure and solid baking performance are key attributes that ensure its popularity will continue.

Gleadell’s view - Following on from the success of Skyfall, Illustrious comes from the same stable. It has the best untreated yield of the group 1 varieties and looks to be an excellent choice from a risk management point of view. Slightly taller than the sector competitors but nice and stiff, with an excellent all round disease portfolio. Slightly later maturing so would suit a grower looking to spread harvest dates with the likes of Skyfall and Crusoe. Best performance looks to be on heavier sites.
End-market suitability - New to the RL this season and was identified as a variety that potentially has good protein functionality. Over 3 years of testing it has performed consistently well, with a high level of water absorption being a key feature. Baking performance has been excellent.

Wheat Varieties - Group 2
UK seed market share autumn 2015 plantings - 4.5%
Gleadell’s view - KWS Lili was a popular choice in 2015, it ticks many boxes and should be considered first and foremost as a very high yielding variety with the potential to achieve an added premium to increase gross margins on farm. Consistent across locations, with outstanding first wheat yields, KWS Lili is best suited to lighter soils.
End-market suitability - Another variety more suited to blends as high yields will possibly dilute protein. Baking performance was variable over the 3 years of testing.

Gleadell’s view - Cordiale has developed a strong place on farm. It has given consistent quality year on year, helping it to maintain a solid market share since its introduction over 10 years ago. The early maturity is a popular trait – ensuring quality in the barn along with a decent entry into OSR.
End-market suitability - Baking and milling performance has remained consistently good over many years since this variety joined the RL. Millers have relied upon Cordiale as their group 2 variety of choice. Treated yield is similar to Crusoe, with early to harvest credentials and resilient protein and hagberg levels maintaining its popularity, we expect to see its longevity continue.

Gleadell’s view - Possibly the most exciting new addition to the 2016/17 RL – KWS Siskin is a supercharged version of the popular variety KWS Lili. Siskin takes yields to a new level and is the equal highest yielding variety on the new list for the eastern region but with outstanding disease resistance scores including a 7 for Septoria tritici, the most yield robbing disease for winter wheat. Consistent across soil types and rotational positions KWS Siskin looks set to be very popular this year.
End-market suitability - New to the RL this season and has a degree of variability in its baking performance. With its very high yields its milling usage will probably be suited to blends, as optimum full spec milling protein may be difficult to achieve.

Wheat Varieties - Group 3
UK seed market share autumn 2015 plantings - 0.5%
Gleadell’s view - A new variety added to the RL last season that struggled to gain market share in a difficult year for group 3 soft wheats. With an exceptional performance on farm last harvest, the variety looks like an interesting choice for the soft wheat grower – particularly suited to later sowings and second wheat situations, performing well on both light and heavy sites.
End-market suitability - Good Gluten extensibility has been seen to date and meets all other group 3 criteria.

Gleadell’s view - Basset is one of two new soft group 3’s from KWS this year, the other - KWS Barrel - is very limited in seed supply, however there will be slightly more KWS Basset available. It has equal yield to both Barrel and Britannia in the Eastern region, featuring stiff straw and a good all round disease resistance package. KWS Basset also looks like it will suit early sowing.
End-market suitability - New to the RL this season, it is high yielding and will therefore need an effective level of protein management to achieve full milling potential. Meets all other group 3 criteria.

Wheat Varieties - Group 4 Softs
UK seed market share autumn 2015 plantings - 4.5%
Gleadell’s view - The highest yielding Group 4 soft wheat variety on the
RL, Leeds has been a popular variety over the past few seasons. Its high
specific weight underpinned its launch platform in harvest 13 when we
saw very low specific weights in many other varieties due to the wet
harvest. Leeds has decent all-round disease resistance except for mildew
and brown rust, which will need watching. The variety is particularly
suited to northern sites and lighter soils.

Gleadell’s view - Revelation has been one of the first varieties to sell out
in the past three seasons now. Its on-farm performance has helped its
popularity and it has an outstanding disease portfolio. Consistent across
soil types and rotational position, it produces a very high untreated yield,
reducing risk. It is on the late side so can play a useful role as part of a
portfolio of varieties to spread harvest maturity.

this season. It is a potential group 4 soft variety, which has flexibility in
sowing date and consistent yield performance so far in trials. It has a good
all round disease portfolio – including OWBM resistance.

KWS Silverstone looks to favour light soils and has very high yield
potential in the northern region, although on limited data. Consistent yield
performance across other regions, and a solid all round disease package.
Straw strength will need to be managed to maximise the potential of the
variety.

Gleadell’s view - Another candidate variety included in this years seed
catalogue, Marston is a hard group 4 variety with high yield potential
but backed up with solid disease scores including a 7 for Septoria
tritici. The variety is from breeder DSV and a downgraded quality
wheat, its grain qualities are very good and looks like it may find a
home with added premiums, certainly one to keep an eye on this year
with high levels of disease.

Graham
Meet GRahaM, the early maturing, hard feed wheat, with excellent disease resistance and potential for early drillingGRahaM is the newest Winter Wheat offering from Syngenta to the 2016/17 ahDB Recommended List. With high yields, a 7 rating for Septoria tritici and strong straw, GRahaM is a very interesting new variety to consider...
GRahaM’s growth habit is highly suited to early drilling. It is slow to develop over the winter and stays prostrate to the ground. In Syngenta observation plots, GRahaM went through its growth stages at the same rate as Grafton, and heading occurred on the same day. Maturity is given as a 0, similar to JB Diego, but in reality it is the 5th earliest winter wheat variety to reach maturity (ahDB RL 2016/17).
In Syngenta trials GRahaM has been the highest yielding variety in early September drill trials over 2 years and 2 sites. along with it’s over winter growth habit, and innate high yields, GRahaM’s strong straw and excellent foliar disease profile means that GRahaM is highly suited to early drilling.
What does Graham bring to the table?
BrEEDErS INSIGhT
UK treated yield is 104%Cm, and Graham is the highest yielding variety in the West

Gleadell’s view - A Conqueror cross – KWS Crispin looks by its parentage to
be well suited to late sowing. Crispin has removed its named parents two real
weaknesses in brown rust and low spec weight. KWS Crispin looks like it will
be a popular choice for 2016, its untreated yield is one of the highest on the
list and is the only new group 4 hard variety with OWBM resistance, which
could be a good management tool with the loss of Chlorpyrifos. Although it is
suited to late sowing – it also performs very well in the main drilling position
– particularly grown under farm protocols as we have seen in private trials.

KWS Crispin is a high yielding Group 4 with good physical grain quality and exceptional disease resistance characteristics. Resistance scores include maximum ratings for yellow rust and mildew. It is a vigorous variety that has performed equally well in the East, and West and has the second highest untreated yield on the RL after KWS Siskin. With Conqueror in its parentage it is no surprise that it performs well in the late drilled slot.

Gleadell’s view - Costello was a new entrant to the RL last year, however
2016 is the first year with any volume of commercial seed availability.
Costello is from the same stable as JB Diego and looks to follow on in its
footsteps. The variety appears to give consistent on farm performance
backed up with good all-round disease resistance and perhaps even some
added quality, including a monstrous specific weight – the highest on the

Winter Barley - Malting Varieties
UK seed market share autumn 2015 plantings - 1.5%
Gleadell’s view - Talisman is now fully approved for brewing following a successful 2nd year of testing, the variety shows consistent performance across different sites/situations and is particularly strong on light land. The variety has reasonably tall straw with medium strength and good all-round disease resistances.
End-market suitability - Talisman is now fully approved for use in brewing. However to date it has not been trialled extensively for malting and should be grown on contract where possible.

Gleadell’s view - SY Venture is the most popular winter malting barley variety grown in the UK, well-liked by growers and end users alike. The variety has short, reasonably stiff straw and generally good all-round disease resistances. However Rhynchosporium resistance is not the strongest and as such will require monitoring. SY Venture performs better on heavier soil types.
End-market suitability - SY Venture is fully approved by the IBD for production of malt for brewing and is first choice among brewers and maltsters for winter malting barley. Growers will find good demand in most regions although it should only be grown on contract in southern areas.

next level with a 5% UK yield difference between it and the best 2-row
feed type. Showing yield increase over Volume in all regions, Bazooka
will be the hybrid of choice for drilling this autumn. The variety has a

Beret GoldBeret Gold is a broad spectrum seed treatment giving excellent disease control for wheat. Containing 25g Fludioxonil, Beret Gold gives superior control of Fusarium and Microdochium nivale on top of this it also covers Septoria nodorum, soil-borne bunt and covered smut, giving excellent coverage. Beret Gold is the best choice single purpose treatment for your wheat seed and as such it is our product of choice.
Redigo ProRedigo Pro ensures sound establishment in all varieties of winter and spring wheat, providing a healthy crop to build on for high yield potential. Redigo Pro protects against all important seed- and soil-borne wheat diseases. It is also suitable for durum wheat, winter and spring oats and barley, rye and triticale.
LatitudeLatitude gives excellent control of the soil-borne fungus take-all. It is a popular choice of product in second and third cereal situations where take-all risk is high. Latitude is co-applied with a single purpose treatment.
Austral Plus Austral Plus protects against seed and soil-borne disease with an added insecticide element to protect against wheat bulb fly. Often used following root crops where wheat bulb fly could be a problem or after grass where wireworm can be troublesome.
Jockey Jockey offers control of seed-borne diseases plus good protection against take-all along with some protection against early foliar disease so is popular for varieties susceptible to yellow rust and Septoria tritici. Jockey also improves rooting, which can help improve anchorage.
TurboTurbo seed treatment contains a complex of nutrients which aid establishment and rooting in the critical stages of the seedlings life. A strong healthy root system will ensure the plant can access the nutrition in the soil solution it requires throughout the growing season reducing the impact of abiotic stress and improving yield potential.

Pulses
Gleadell’s view - Tundra was added to the PGRO RL in 2014 but autumn 2015 was its first commercial season, and it proved to
be very popular. The variety really takes winter beans forward in yield terms with a 8% increase over the old favourite Wizard.
Retaining decent seed size and similar agronomics to Wizard, Tundra looks to remain a popular choice.
End-market suitability - Tundra has proved to be a suitable variety for splitting, although slightly smaller than other varieties
of winter beans. It has smoother skin when compared with other winter bean varieties which means it is more acceptable for
export as a whole bean for “foule medames”.
Breeder Limagrain Europe
UK Agent Limagrain UK
Gleadell’s view - Wizard has been a mainstay in the winter bean sector for over 10 years, and to many growers has been the
only winter bean to grow. The variety has given consistent human consumption grade quality so will remain popular. However, it
will lose some market share to its new rival.
End-market suitability - Liked by end users due to large size and therefore most suitable for split bean market. Used less than
spring beans for Foule Mesdames due to its darker, wrinkled skin.

Small seed website
Gleadell have developed a simple to use e-platform which includes more than 50 different products for sale covering the small seeds sector; including game cover, greening options and environmental crops, grasses and forage – which can be ordered at any time of the day or night, so no need to wait for our offices to open. We like to think we have compiled one of the widest ranges of game cover options, available in one location perfect for busy farm managers and shoot managers for example.Gleadell have a long established name in the arable seed sector and are really excited about extending our recognised high quality and service focus into the wider seed sectors including grass seed, environmental mixtures and game cover.
Ensuring the site is simple to use and works across all devices was a critical area of focus - so providing you have an internet connection you can either place your order in the office
or the field, paying by debit or credit card or for current Gleadell customers you can pay by account, and receive invoices in the normal way.
For anyone unsure on exactly what they require we offer product descriptions and outline the role each should play; we also provide a crop selector table providing information such as pack size, crop purpose (cover, feed or nectar), utilisation period and crop duration, as well as agronomy notes on sowing dates and seed rates. If you are still unsure you can speak directly with a fully qualified expert. All orders are normally delivered within 48 hours.
Within the site – there are options available to satisfy new and existing Countryside Stewardship agreements – either part of ELS/HLS or the new mid and higher tier system.
The grass seeds range includes short, medium and long-term leys as well as specific haylage and silage mixes and equine leys. Forage crops include rape, kale, fodder beet, stubble turnips and root mixtures.
A couple of product options which have been popular thus far – are our Carbon/Quinoa mixtures – designed for shoots across the country, with the rapid establishing Carbon, a Kale/Mustard hybrid – and the high seed bearing Quinoa makes this is very useful mixture for many situations, providing both cover and feed in one mixture.
The Green Manuring mixtures are also set to be popular this autumn – and we have a wide range of options, covering many different basis – but including species such as Black Oat/Forage Rye/Vetch/Mustard and the newly allowable Fodder Radish.
