August 2018 August 2018 Sedona United Methodist Church SUM GOOD NEWS Greetings to our Sedona UMC Family & Friends, Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. (Matthew 5:9) In His sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called sons (children) of God” (Matt. 5:9). Into a world that is so often wrought with division, violence and hatred, Jesus calls upon us as peacemakers. We aren’t given the choice of whether or not we would like to be peacemakers and we certainly aren’t given the choice of what kind of world we would like to live in. As bad as things may be, this is the only world we have and if we are going to be true followers of Jesus Christ, we must be peacemakers. But, what did Jesus mean by calling us to be peacemakers? A working definition of a peacemaker is actively seeking to reconcile people to God and to one another. The word peace comes from the Hebrew word “shalom”. “Shalom” is often used as a greeting word or a departing word in much the same way we might say “hello” or “goodbye”. It is a broad term related to health, prosperity, harmony, and wholeness. It means perfect welfare, serenity, fulfillment, freedom from trouble, and liberation from anything which hinders contentment. When a Jew said “Shalom” they were wishing one another the full presence, peace, and prosperity of God. A very familiar benediction is found in the Book of Numbers 6:24-26: “The LORD bless you and protect you; the LORD make His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the LORD look with favor upon you and give you peace”. And the word “make” in the term “peacemakers” comes from the Greek verb that means “to do” or “to make.” It is a word bursting with energy. It calls out action and initiative. Peace must be made. Peace never happens by chance. Peacemaking is a divine work and God is the author of peace—And, Jesus is the supreme Peacemaker! Jesus came to establish peace; his message and his example proclaimed peace; his death purchased peace; and his resurrection enables peace. The life of Jesus was the epitome of God’s mission to bring God’s peace and to initiate the healing relationships of peace with God. God gave everything so that we might experience true peace. SUM GOOD NEWS

Greetings to our Sedona UMC Family & Friends,

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. (Matthew 5:9)

In His sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, because they will be called sons (children) of God” (Matt.

God is on a recruiting mission—God is looking for volunteers to join God’s Peace Corps. He’s looking for a few good men and a few good women who will spread God’s peace all over the world. So much war, so much strife, so much pain exists in the world. That’s means there is plenty of work for all of us to do. Will we take up the mantel of peacemaker? Every step we take, every heartfelt action, is promised God’s blessing! How are we called to action in this world? —Be a peacemaker!—Be A child of God—A true reflection of the life and person of Jesus Christ. During the month of August, I will deliver a sermon series entitled “Blessed Are the Peacemakers” in which will look closely and study the deeper meanings of peacemaking, the ways in which God is calling us to be “Peacemakers” – “Children of God” - and you are invited to be a part of this journey. Oh, how this world could use a whole lot of Peacemakers right about now! Grace & Peace,

    Pastor Fred

    COMMITTEE CORNER

Trustees: The Verizon Tower construction is almost done! There is still some

cosmetic items to do and they still need to fix the parking lot before we seal it. We did

receive a “Thank You” from the Sedona Fire Department for the construction of the tower

since they have so much trouble in this area with the signal. Please try to be patient with

our limited parking while this is happening. A work day was held on July 27th—thanks to

    all that participated!.

The Missions Committee: We continue to plan for the remainder of 2018 to provide

mission opportunities and support for our community. Our next mission opportunity for

volunteers will be for the Sedona Community Dinner on September 17th. Please see

Kathy Roth if you are interested in volunteering for a shift. Thank you to those who

volunteered on July 30th for this special dinner that is so important to our community.

The SET team has the “Bears and Barts” fellowship opportunity on August

19th. (A great event to invite friends!) They have also been working on develop-

ing Community Partnerships with a Movie Night at Rainbow Acres. And plans

have begun for our Trunk or Treat and Holiday Boutique events. The Younglife

Group is taking over the Pumpkin Patch so we are looking forward to partnering

with them on some Fall activities!

The choirs are ramping up to begin their 2018/2019 season. See page 10 & 11

of the newsletter for music opportunities! We have handbell workshops this

month, with regular practices for the bell and chancel choirs starting on Thurs-

day, Sept. 6 and a chancel choir workshop on Saturday, September 8th. We are

excited to have Jan VanKooten and Laurie Rathbun directing our chancel choir

and Bob Martin returning with our Bell Choir. Please think about joining us this

    season!

A meeting of this group is planned for Wednesday, September 12 at 6

p.m. in Fellowship Hall. Please join us for planning and dinner. Plans

for another golf tournament is in the works for a date in October.

Start thinking about who you can invite to play a fun round of golf

with lots of prizes! Thank you to Kathy Huff who is organizing this

activity that will also be fund raiser for a need in our community.

Also don’t forget to like and share our Facebook posts. This really

helps get the word about what is happening here at SUMC!

    COMMITTEE CORNER

Christian Ed Committee is continuing the study on prayer through August 28th.

Watch for a new opportunity in September with a study on our Spiritual Gifts. We will

also be getting the children in Sunday School more involved in the church services

through music, puppets, and assisting as ushers & acolyte.

S.A.G.A.P.—Sedona Area Gap Asist Program. The basement walls are getting ready to

be painted as the storage area for SAGAP. This program is being spearheaded by DeNise Bowers

to help the Sedona residents currently on assistance with those items not covered by state

programs. (Hygiene products, cleaning products, diapers, over counter medicines, paper

products.). Please contact DeNise if interested in helping with this important ministry.

CARING LAY MINISTRY TEAM: Please remember that if you know someone in our

congregation who is ill, please let Pastor or Jenny or one of our CLM team members know. It is far better to insure that we know the need for support, rather than assume that we already know. Since many of our CLM team members are out of town, the August 5 Kachina Point Service is cancelled and the next SUMC Service there will be

    September 2.

SPRC REPORT: The SPRC will not hold a meeting in August, and their next scheduled meeting

will be September 28th. Thanks to the SPRC (Anna Schneck, Carol Keller, & Barb Chandler) for covering the church office while Pastor Fred and Jenny were on vacation for a week. They will also begin planning for our October 28th Charge Conference and our new District Superintendent, Nancy Cushman’s visit.

Finance Team: A “State of the Church” meeting will be held during fellowship on

Sunday, September 16th to go over our accomplishments of 2018.

LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO SERVE?

SUMC is always looking for help on one of their committees. Prayerfully consider serving on one of

tional Care / Wellness /Prayer Ministries, Missions and Outreach, Special Events/Fellowship,

    HANDBELL WORKSHOPS!

    Can I Ring Handbells?

Yes you can! And much easier than you think. Even if you don’t have musical experience you will be

reading music after just two beginning workshop sessions. The best part is that it is absolutely free.

No instrument to rent or purchase. No lessons to pay for. And no daily practicing like you may have

had learning a band instrument in school.

You are invited to attend two workshops and then prayerfully consider if this ministry of praising our

Lord with music is right for you.

These Handbell Workshops will be on Thursdays, August 23 and 30, from 5:00 to 6:15 pm. Please

call me at 248 462-9093 or email me at [email protected] if you have any questions. All ages are

welcome! My goal is to be able to use all of the handbells to enhance the worship experience at

    SUMC.

Many thanks go to our SUMC Bell Rock Ringers for their hard work this past year. Sometimes our

ringers are few in numbers, but we enjoy praising our Lord with music.

    Come, Let Us Sing!

Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

Psalm 95:1 Do you enjoy singing? Does making melody and harmony give you delight? Does singing help you praise God more robustly and with more heart? If so, please consider joining other singers in the Sedona United Methodist Chancel Choir this choral season. Regular rehearsals will begin on Thursday, September 6, 6:30 p.m. in the choir room and will be followed on Saturday, September 8, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. with a singing/fellowship/feasting event during which choir directors Jan VanKooten and Laurie Rathbun will lead singers in sight-singing through much of the choral literature chosen for the upcoming year. Not only will you get a taste for 2018/19’s anthems, but you can also get to know other choir mem-bers and share a tasty lunch with them. Welcoming Our New West District Superintendent Rev. Nancy Cushman

I am looking forward to getting to know the churches and pastors of the West District. I thought I would share a little about myself, so you can begin to get to know me. My roots in the West District are deep. I was called into ministry in Blythe, California and the former Blythe Community UMC sent me into candidacy. I preached my first sermon as a local pastor at Haven UMC in Jerome and my second sermon at Mountain View UMC in Cottonwood. The 25th anniversary of that first sermon will be this November. I served with my husband, George, as his associate pastor until being appointed to Shepherd of the Valley UMC where I was their solo pastor. After a season with them, my husband and I were appointed co-pastors at Prescott UMC. As you can see my ministry has been mostly in the West District. Most recently, I served as the Senior Pastor at North Scottsdale UMC. It is exciting to be coming back to a district that has been a part of so many milestones in my life and ministry. I was raised in the Army where my father was a career officer. God trained me well for the appointment system! Growing up, we lived on a base or in a town for one and a half to three years before moving on. I have lived in two foreign countries, France and Venezuela, and visited many more. I attended college earning degrees in Business Management and Construction Science at Kansas State University, a master’s degree in Civil Engineering: Construction from Stanford University, and finally an Masters of Divinity from the Claremont School of Theology. I spent six years working for construction contractors moving from jobsite to jobsite across five states. I had no idea then that Blythe would become a crossroads in my life. While working on a prison project in Blythe, I visited the local United Methodist Church. While I was raised Episcopalian, there wasn’t an Episcopal church in Blythe, so I visited the United Methodist Church and boy, did it change my life! I met George, who was the pastor of the church and we married. As we began our life together, he encouraged me to answer my call to ministry. I have two adult stepsons who have families of their own and we have two adult daughters. We also have six grandchildren and two foster grandchildren; we are a large, happy, blended family. I am looking forward to getting to know you, the people and pastors of the West District, and learning your stories as I visit to worship and to lead your Charge Conferences. Over the last few weeks, I have been praying for the churches and pastors by name, a practice I will continue. I have prayed specifically for those who are beginning a new season of ministry. 1 Corinthians 3:4-9 has been a theme verse for me during this time of transition reminding me that we plant and water, till and nourish the fields, God is the one who makes it grow. I can’t wait to see what God will grow among, between, and through us in the season ahead. In joyful anticipation, Rev. Nancy Cushman
