SUM GOOD NEWS
New Year Message
Isaiah 43 New International Version (NIV) 16 This is what the Lord says—he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, 17 who drew out the chariots and horses, the army and reinforcements together, and they lay there, never
to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick: 18 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the
wilderness and streams in the wasteland.
Every New Year brings on new challenges and new miracles. We consider making New Year resolutions
to fix what was wrong last year. The prophet Isaiah tells us to forget the former things; do not dwell on
the past but look to the present, for God is doing a new thing; can you not see it?
As we begin a new liturgical year with the celebration of the Feast of Epiphany, let us be like the wise men
who traveled from afar to see the King of the Jews, and seek God who is made manifest/revealed in the
birth of Jesus. Let us be amazed in the revelations of the mysteries of Christ and reveal in the ways God
make streams in the desert.
God is doing a new thing! Let us rejoice! God has not forgotten and God’s promises are true. Let us stand
together seeking through prayer and praise the marvelous things God has for us.
Pastor Jimelvia

Dale and Denise Jurgensen Dale and Denise Jurgensen are retired military officers and their three sons are making careers out of the Air Force too. They were stationed in Germany, Japan, Hawaii and England including several states. They retired from the Air Force in 1993 and both pursued a second career in education. Dale taught high school special education and Denise was an art teacher. Dale is an avid golfer and Denise has a passion for horses so when the opportunity presented itself to move to Sedona in May 2013, they readily took it!! They love the small town ambience of the Village of Oak Creek and the spectacular scenery surrounding Sedona. Denise and Dale are pleased to be a part of the SUMC family.

Tanya Mayer, one of our ESOL tutors, also tutors at W. Sedona Elementary. She has a lot to crow about because two young brothers she tutors there, with hers and others help, have written, illustrated and published books. The adventures of Mama Rabbit, by Adrian Jaimes Gonzalez follows the adventures of the resourceful Mama Rabbit as she meets characters whom she asks to help save her baby, Jesu s, from Papa Fox. Adrian’s book is available in an English and a bilingual version. Axel Gonzales Jaimes has written Rambo Rooster, about a rooster who causes problems on each farm he's lived on. Both boy’s books are available from Amazon.
Tanya can probably arrange to get you an autographed copy of each! Our ESOL students had a great time taking turns reading about Mama Rabbit—it’s amazing how well they did.
Shannon Jakes, a language arts instructor at Verde Valley School, came to ESOL to ask for volunteers to demonstrate Mexican recipes to her Spanish students, using only Spanish. Now that’s a switch! Several students jumped at the idea. Barbara Chandler’s students, Rosa and Ofelia, taught them how to make tortillas. Scot Munro’s student, Mirella signed up to teach them how to make Mexican rice, but was unable to come and sent her friend, Jose to cover for her. Jackie Ritter’s student, Erika, demonstrated Flan. Barb and Suzie were able to be present at least once—it was so much fun and everybody learned more Spanish, in an exciting fashion. Teaching cooking has given us an idea for our church!

HOW ABOUT YOU AS A MISSIONER?
Please consider supporting FaithWorks missions in 2015 either by supporting any and all missions with monetary donations, commiting to be prayer warrior or by participating in mission yourself! Suzie Dunn is looking for happy mission minded people to join her Saturday March 7 at The Olive Branch in Rimrock from 7:30-4:30. The Olive Branch provides Christian family type living for men and women with developmental disabilities. We volunteers would offer the likes of cleaning, paint-ing, light building repairs, landscaping and whatever the administrator thinks we can do ALONG-SIDE the residents. The cost is $30 per person (includes lunch) or $50 for a family of two or more. See specific brochures on the bulletin boards. Contact Suzie at 928-284-4707 or [email protected]

Pledges/Stewardship Update
If you haven’t made a commitment/pledge yet, please read the following stewardship talk given by Finance Chair, Joe Huff at the November 23, 2014 worship service. “I know the question you are all asking yourselves…What does the Chairman of the Finance Committee want to talk to us about at this time of year? Well, surprisingly enough, it’s our Stewardship program. For the last few weeks we have been speaking to you about Time, Talents, and today the subject is Treasures. It is important that we discuss this today, as next Sunday represents the close of our program. This has become quite significant because we have received only 45 pledges to date. Historically, SUMC receives 82 pledges during our campaign season. After next week, our Treasurer, Gene Chandler, will take the total of these pledges and produce a prelim-inary budget that will be reviewed by the Finance Committee. I don’t have to tell you what a difficult job this will be if almost half of our expected pledges are not submitted. Over the last few weeks, Polly has provided you with impressive lists of the Missions SUMC has support-ed over the years, many of which have received continuous support for the 34-year history of our Church. I would like to add another important mission to that list. The one that is sitting perhaps 3 to 6 feet or more from you today. When we speak about the life and programs of our Church, we cannot forget about the needs of our Congregation. While we have all been supportive of our Church, let us not forget that our Church has also been there in times of need for each of us. I know the generosity of our Church and I want to ask all of you that have not submitted your pledge to please consider the consequences. Polly was kind enough to prepare a wonderful text for me to read today that goes along with the section from Deuteronomy that is printed on the insert in today’s bulletin. Being the troublemaker that I am, I’ve decided to speak to you instead about a different Treasure. Did anyone see Betty and Kent Brownlow walk in this morning? I didn’t either. I just want you to know they are here. As I remember, they usually sat right down here in front. We lost Kent just over a year ago, and Betty passed away last February. While not regarded as the most well to do of our congregation, they were always supportive.
December 29, 2014
I want to bring everyone up to date on our 2015 stewardship pledges. We have been blessed with three additional pledges since my last letter. This brings our totals, as of today, to 63 pledges and $184,924.15.
We are grateful for the continued generosity of our membership here at The Sedona United Methodist Church. The Finance Committee is continuing to work with our available finances as we move into 2015. May God Bless you all, and may God Bless our Church.
Joe Huff, Finance Chair

Sometime in the last few years, Kent and Betty sat down and made provisions to continue the sup-port of their beloved Church even after they were gone. Several months ago, their executor con-tacted SUMC to tell us the Church had been granted a gift from their estate. A few weeks later we received a check for almost $30,000. I’m very happy to tell you that the gift provided by Kent and Betty is the initial deposit of The Sedo-na United Methodist Church Permanent Endowment Fund. Along with other gifts we hope to be granted from our congregation in the future, their money will be invested conservatively to provide an ongoing income stream to help fund our Church Programs in the years to come. As you can see, the Brownlow’s have already made their pledge for 2015 and many years to come. I ask those of you that have not completed your pledge to please join Kent and Betty, and support our Church by submitting your pledge. If you simply have not gotten around to filling out your pledge, now is the time. If, for some reason, you have decided to not submit a pledge this year, I ask you to please revisit that decision. Now is the time. If you have faithfully supported our Church, but have never been comfortable filling out your pledge card, please take a moment to reconsider, because now is the time. If you are new to our Church and have never pledged to a church’s Stewardship program, let me assure you, now is the time. Thank you and may God bless this Church and its Congregation.”
NEW OFFICE HOURS
SUMC’s office hours will be reduced beginning the first week in January of 2015 due to budget limitations. Vicki’s hours will be reduced from 28 per week to 18 per week. Vicki will be in the office Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00-4:00 and will work from home a half day on Wednesdays. We plan to hire someone to work on Wednesdays. So, the office will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays; it will be closed on Mondays and Fridays.
Because of her reduced hours, Vicki’s focus will be mainly on the bulletins and newsletters. Please be thoughtful in what extra requests you make of Vicki as her time will be limited. Thank you for your cooperation.

A Great Time at the Christmas Open House and
Luncheon held December 21
Christmas Cantata and SUMC Open House and Luncheon held December 21
Our second annual Christmas Open House and Luncheon on December 21 was a wonderful time to
celebrate Christmas. First we enjoyed worship and the Chancel Choir’s Cantata “An Unending Song” by
John W. Peterson. The choir did an excellent job which earned them a well deserved standing ovation!
Thank you Dr. Lily Chou for your leadership. Our soup luncheon followed and this year we featured
“The Twelve Soups of Christmas.” Although we only had 11 soups, no one really noticed. Thanks to our
soup makers and hard workers: Ellen Brooks, Kat Bramblett, Anna Schneck, Linda Nelson, Freda
Wrons, Bonnie Fletcher, Cheryl Henriksen, Suzie Dunn and Doris Phillips. Thanks to Julia Fanning and
the UMW who supplied us with the delicious cake for dessert. Gail Davis and Andy Timmer were in
charge of the cake and helped with serving and clean up duties. Everyone was talking about Jeff &
Suzie Dunn’s Christmas train. Thanks to Bruce Bramblett who fixed our electricity problem and Pastor
Jimelvia Martin who inspired the theme for the day.

Wellness Notes — "The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him...." Lamentations 3:25 (NIV)
Disclaimer
This article is for infor-
mation only and is not
intended to replace evalu-
ation, diagnosis, and
treatment by your health
care professional.
JANUARY is a new beginning-----again!! We have finished our thank you notes
and put away the gifts and decorations from Christmas; let ourselves steep in
the beauty and wonder of December; but now what? Do we begin with the
guilt of "I ate too much holiday food", "I am stressed from the expense of the
holidays", or "I just have to start exercising"? Or do we start this fresh NEW
YEAR with another set of gifts----these given to ourselves wrapped up in HOPE!!
The gift of LOVE of ourselves: Taking a good look at our self esteem, bathing ourselves in
gratitude for the gifts God has given us, and wrapping ourselves in a mantle of praise.
The gift of PATIENCE: Allowing ourselves to forgive others shortcomings, wait out the processes
of change that may be apparent, and giving ourselves permission to be ourselves and not be
influenced by others choices, decisions, or actions.
The gift of WELLNESS: Begin TODAY with improved food choices with the "My Plate" (check it out
online or at the market) format that helps us nourish our body with the right amount of
healthy nutrients. Start TODAY with a short walk around the block or house, or hallway with
the goal of increasing that activity a little more each day. Breathe deeply and stretch each joint
to release the tightness and stress. Take out that new 2015 Guidepost, Upper Room, Devotion
booklet, or your Bible and start TODAY with a daily time of reading, meditation, and spiritual
strengthening.
The gift of AWARENESS: Open your eyes to injustice, distrust, untruths, and jealousy. Make a
special effort to be more kind, thoughtful, interested, and trusted. Take out your new calendar
and line out your annual physical, lab tests, special Dr. appointments, and prescription list up-
date. Clean out the medicine closet to let it hold only current medications and supplements
(disposing of all outdated or unused meds at the Fire Dept.). KNOW YOUR NUMBERS to start
the year with baseline blood pressure, blood glucose, weight, measurements, and pulse.
Mind, Body, and Spirit Wellness inspires us to carry HOPE in our hearts and improve our journey into
a new and untouched 365 days.
A Blessed New Year to each of you.
