On being a mom …Last Tuesday, I was looking for-

ward to having lunch with my young-est son, who recently moved to his own place. We made a date to meet at home after he got off work. He usually makes it back to Fenton by 1 o’clock, or shortly thereafter.

I picked up lunch and made it home at about 10 minutes to 1 p.m. Because I had my hands full I missed a call from him. Then, of course, I called him back several times and he did not pick up. He didn’t make it home before I had to go back to work. My stomach was in total knots. I was hop-ing he just stopped off at St. John’s to vote and was prepared to chastise him by saying the polls are open until 8, but in the back of my mind I was praying that nothing terrible happened.

He called me as I was pulling into the Times parking lot. He said he was delayed at work because of a sharp pain in his thigh. His manager convinced him not to leave just yet, that he should stay a while longer and walk it off. He did that until his leg felt better and finally got underway, traveling north toward Fenton on Hickory Ridge. Shortly after he got on the road, he had to turn around and find an alternative way home. There was a bad three-car pileup on

Hickory Ridge that appeared to have happened within the past 10 minutes or so.

“I could have been in that accident, Mom,” he whispered. I said, “You better thank God.”

My youngest son is 27 years old and I was again reminded of how precious the lives of all my children are. I never stop worrying about their safety, that they have enough of what they need and that they’re happy. You don’t stop being a mom when they

become adults. This year, three of my young friends and ac-quaintances have brought amazing new babies into the world. I am so happy for them because I know that if all goes well, they are in for many years of hearts filled with pure love, joy and pride. But I also know the years of worry will be there — are they

safe, do they have enough to eat, am I doing everything right to be a good mom, the list is endless.

To these new moms I can only say one thing. It doesn’t matter if your children are babies, toddlers, adoles-cents or adults, the best Mother’s Day gifts you will ever receive are right in front of you — the precious humans you brought into this world.

Happy Mother’s Day!

ODD BITSThroughout most of history and in many parts of the world today, a person would have to be crazy to throw out perfectly edible pieces of animals just because they weren’t prime cuts. Odd Bits puts modern zest in ancient and impoverished diets with recipes on how to cook ears, feet, tongue, hearts, lungs, gizzards, kidneys, brains, testicles, intestines, and more.

GIGGLE WATERThis self-published recipe book told its 1928 readers how to make delightful, Prohibition-flaunting giggle drinks, including “Eleven Famous Cocktails of The Most Exclusive Club in New York.” Drinks such as The Bronx, The Astor, The Bacardi, The Clover, and The Dry Martini were among the recipes.

ROALD DAHL’S REVOLTING RECIPESIt can’t be all lickable Snozzberries and edible flower teacups in Roald Dahl’s world. Revolting Recipes, written by Dahl’s wife Felicity, offers up both dismal fare such as Mr. Twit’s Beard Food (mashed potatoes, eggs, mushrooms, and cocktail weenies) and some which is more promising, like Eatable Marshmallow Pillows.

SPECIAL EFFECTS COOKBOOKPublished in 1992, this still locatable family fun cookbook promises “Easy to create recipes for food that Smokes, Erupts, Moves, Sings, Glows, Talks, Cracks, Pops, and Swims!” A great way to sneak science into your children’s pastries.

THE “WHY I’M SUCH A FAT BASTARD” RECIPE BOOKA cookbook for all who believe Truth is Beauty. Buster is really sick of Kindle diet books. So he made his own Kindle book, showing how to make British desserts. It’s filled with butter and cream and sugar and even some bad language for good measure.

OFFICIAL STAR TREK COOKING MANUALToday there’s an updated publication of Star Trek cookery, and there have been endless unofficial imitators, but this was the first and the official. Printed in 1978, when the franchise was still sacred to a relatively small number of Trekkers, this is for true academy-trained cadets only. Mr. Scott’s Scot’s Broth. Dr. McCoy’s Cornbread. Romulan stew. They’re all here.

He ran the Wings of Mercy 5K race in 2018. Wings of Mercy provides air-plane rides for medical patients for care that would otherwise be inaccessible due to distance. W right plans to run it again with his daughter in a stroller.

Wright appreciates that the W orld Vision 6K focused not only on local water, but also global water access.

Organizer Joshua Kennedy is as -sociate pastor at West Flint Church of the Nazarene. He said the 6K distance is chosen because it’ s the average distance women and children in devel-oping countries have to walk for any access to water.

This distance struck married couple Curtis and Jordan Groover of Fenton as they ran together . Jordan said the first lap felt fine, but then she realized that someone would still be walking just to access water . “When they do it, they’ve got water on their backs,” Curtis added. “It’s like a precious com-modity to them.”

As a couple, they try to participate in these events a few times a year. Curtis also ran the Chicago World Vision race.

Kennedy said this race raised $5,100 through registrations and donations. This will give lifelong clean water access to 100 children. One method is through new wells being dug in areas of need, usu-ally in developing African nations. “The long-term vision of that is to install them and train people how to utilize them and maintain them,” Kennedy said.

The event also raised $6,100 for the Flint Kids Fund with several Flint-area sponsors.

While the 6K was held in Flint, there were 50,000 others across the globe running on the same day . There were approximately 40,000 in the U.S.

The next race date is tentatively set

for May 16, 2020. Go to teamworldvi-sion.org for more information.

This was the inaugural Flint race, but also the first large event utilizing the brand new Chevy Commons trail system, a 60-acre portion of the city-owned, former automobile manufac -turing facility , commonly known as Chevy in the Hole, into a natural area called Chevy Commons.

Fleas are something no pet par-ent wants to encounter, but they’re all too common among companion animals. Unfortunately, once fleas are in the house, they can affect everyone in the household - includ-ing people. The following six signs of flea infestations are not always appar-ent, especially when they aren’t in abundance, but they are some-thing pet owners can watch out for. 1. Scratching, licking and biting: Fleas set up residence in hard-to-reach places, says PetMD. The head, neck and tail of a pet are common areas where flea infestations occur. An animal that is consistently pick-ing at these areas may have fleas. 2. Restlessness: Fleas are uncom-fortable and can upset pets. If your dog or cat is acting out of sorts, fleas could be to blame. 3. The presence of “flea dirt”: Black deposits within the fur near the skin are often flea droppings. If you’re unsure, drop a little into water and see if they turn it reddish-brown. If so, this is indicative of fleas. 4. Raised bumps or welts: Fleas can irritate the skin, causing raised welts on pets and people. People are often affected near the ankles when

fleas jump from the carpet onto hu-man skin. 5. Fur loss: A flea infestation can cause constant scratching and biting, which may eventually con-tribute to the loss of fur. 6. Pale gums: Pale gums are a sign of anemia and indicate that a pet has a severe flea infestation. The dog or cat simply cannot reproduce red blood cells as fast as they’re drained by voracious fleas. Sometimes it’s possible to see fleas in action, but they tend to jump and scurry so fast that they can be hard to detect. Pet owners who suspect their pets are dealing with fleas infestations should consult a vet. He or she will likely recommend a flea shampoo and preventative treatments to stop future outbreaks.
