FCAT 2.0 Reading Updates from Just Read Florida

“In December 2011, the Level 3 passing score for FCAT 2.0 Reading was determined as 245.

Concordant scores that are comparable for the alternative assessments – SAT and ACT – will be determined through a concordant study that links student data from the 2011-2012 FCAT 2.0 Reading administration to those students taking the SAT/ACT during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 school years.

However, the concordant study requires a sufficient number of student data from both the FCAT 2.0 and the alternative assessments. This is why concordant scores will not be available until Fall 2013.”

FCAT 2.0 Reading Updates from Just Read Florida

“While the concordant study is underway, the following applies to the current cohort of 11th grade students who have not yet met the graduation requirement score of Level 3 (245) on FCAT 2.0:

•They must participate in the Fall/Spring FCAT 2.0 Reading Retakes.

•They may also take the SAT or ACT in order to earn a score in advance in an effort to attain the highest score possible prior to the release of the concordant score.

•As stated in State Board Rule 6A-6.054 (Student Reading Intervention Requirements), those who earn a Level 2 may receive reading intervention services through enrollment in Intensive Reading, content area courses taught by a teacher who has completed CAR-PD or NGCAR-PD.”

HIGHLIGHTS FROM NAEP STUDY ON COMPUTER BASED

TESTING FOR WRITING

14

“Data were collected on how often they [students] engaged in 23 actions related to editing, formatting, viewing, and reviewing text. While exploratory in nature, the collection of data on the frequency with which students used various word-processing tools during the assessment offers new insight into how students interact with technology during a timed assessment, and the possible relationship between that interaction and performance.”

HIGHLIGHTS FROM NAEP STUDY ON COMPUTER BASED

TESTING

15

• Twenty-four percent of students at both grades 8 and 12 performed at the Proficient level in writing in 2011.

• The Students whose teachers more frequently asked them to use the computer to draft and revise their writing scored higher than those whose teachers did so less frequently (figure 13). Students whose teachers never asked them to draft and revise their writing on a computer scored the lowest.

• At both grades 8 and 12, students who used the thesaurus tool more frequently scored higher on average than students who engaged in this action less frequently.

FAIR Updates from Just Read Florida

“Lexiles – There are a few reasons why Lexiles are not provided in this year’s FAIR reports:

•Changes in FAIR to align with FCAT 2.0 and recent revisions to the scales provided in the Appendix of the Common Core would necessitate an additional linking study to accurately define Lexiles provided through FAIR.

•Our contract with MetaMetrics ended, and Lexiles are provided by MetaMetrics. We plan to provide a quantitative readability formula in future iterations of FAIR. There are several readability formulae available for districts and schools.”

FAIR Score Types

New column in Student Score Detail Report: “Grade Questions Benchmarked” refers to the grade level of the questions presented to students within each passage. For example, each student will begin with a grade level passage, so the first score for each student in all assessment windows should be the grade level of the student. If the student receives additional passages, then the grade level of the questions associated with each of the passages will be represented by this score. Since FAIR is adaptive, the grade level may fluctuate depending on student performance.

ALTERNATIVE PROGRESS MONITORING

• As with FAIR, progress monitoring must be done three times a year: baseline, mid-year, and end-of-year.

• Reading coaches’ meetings will be used to review student reports generated from Achieve.

• For SM5, run the cumulative performance report.

• Best practices that address specific needs of students will be discussed.
