GOOD NEWSlsaiah 49:3, 5-5 / r Corinthians e:r-3 / John r:29r34

When I was ten, my teacher decided to call me by my first name, M.ry,rather than by my family name, Kathy, paft of my middle name. My teacherfelt we should honor the Blessed Virgin by calling me Mary. The name

Katharine had been in my mother's family for years, and she liked itsstrength. lt was an abrupt switch, but like many children, I quickly got used

to responding to either name-and sometimes to both.

Names tell us something about a person. Today's Scriptures speak to thesingularity of the lncarnation by talking about names people gave Jesus. The

early Church looked through the sacred Scriptures of the Hebrew Bible and

realized that Jesus was like the figure in the prophecies of lsaiah, so theycame to know him as seruant (one who does God's will), covenant (a prom-ise between two parties), and lightto the nations.

Paul calls him Messiah(Christos in Greek) and Lord. And John refersto himas the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world" and the "Son ofGod."

We haven't yet been able to articulate the fullness of who Jesus is. We

believe he is fully God and fully human and that he came out of love for us tous from sin-,and death. ln qur attempt to understand.'that, we've given

many narr&. Each reveals a.little more about who !9ls fur us and whois with God. {*;

What is your name for Jesus now, and what does that mean to you?

d e ar PAD Rf,

O Erery year-dyringflu season, sonrcone with a terriblc coW or cough

wants n slwke my, lund ar lwg me at tlu sign of pacq and people

wtw are skk dinkfrom tlu Communion cup. Wlry mn't paislesban the a.ry and the stgn of pcace duringflu season?

A Many people share your concern. As a priest, I'm'El' huged by an entire congregation throughout flu season. If

I'm sick, I warn people as they approach, but sorne people

want a hug anyway. For meny, communiry fellowshiptrumps prudence.

As far as receiving the precious Blood, obviously itwould be best if those who are sick don't drink from thecup. But even if they do, receiving the precious Blood ismore important to me than the slight risk of illness.

However, if it bothers you that much, there's nothingwrongwith refusing the precious Blood for health reasons.

And instead of shaking hands and hugging et the sign ofpeace, try nodding and waving. If people just don't get itand push for more, a simple,.*Don't went to pass on theflu" should stop them.

In today's smiety, fx too many things keep us

physically epart. I refuse to casually surrender anythingthat brings us together in love and fellowship except indire circumstances, and for me, a normal flu season

doesn't quali$.Fr. Rick Potts, CSsR [email protected]
