Just because certain things have been done in a certain way in the past here at Second does not mean they need to continue to be done that way. When we grip something too tightly, whether it is a person or an idea or a principle or a procedure, we squeeze the life out of it and all we have left is a lifeless shell. Celebrate new ideas and recognize that God moves in new and mysterious ways beyond what any of us might be sure is the best way. None of us is always right and most of us are often wrong! We can live a both/and life and need not be confined to an either/or world. New plans need not be feared for how they might take away from existing plans. When a new opportunity is presented, rather than worry about how it might draw people from an existing involvement, celebrate that the new venture may be able to involve people not presently connected. It need not be either the new opportunity or the existing option; it can be both the new and the existing. Think “abundance” not “scarcity”! Second Church is blessed with many dedicated members and much effective ministry. While it has strong ministry and mission commitments, there needs to be flexibility and adaptability in how the congregation engages in its priorities. I wish Second Church its members and staff all the best in this exciting new chapter in your life. Please know that I will pray for you as I hope you will pray for me. Thank you for the opportunity to have served as your pastor for these past nine years. Blessings, Dan

Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say – Duke of Albany in King Lear.

Heeding Shakespeare’s advice, in my final Parson to Person reflection with you, I share some personal thoughts with the deep hope that they will be heard with the deep love that generates them. Here are some things I have noticed or experienced at Second Church - things you can do for your new pastor - things that I hope come across with the hopeful concern with which they are intended.

Let your new pastor be who he/she is. A new pastor is different from prior pastors and necessarily so, as each of us is a unique person. God made your pastor in God’s image so try not to fit him/her into your image of what you think he/she should be. As Thomas Merton observed in No Man Is an Island: The beginning of love is to let those we love be completely themselves, and not twist them to fit our own image. Otherwise, we love only the reflection of ourselves we find in them. Celebrate the uniqueness of your new leader and be open to how God wants to lead Second Church into the future through the unique leading of a new leader. Even the parson is a person!

I wish Second Church – its members and staff – all the best in this exciting new chapter in your life. Please know that I will pray for you as I hope you will pray for me. Thank you for the opportunity to have served as your pastor for these past nine years.

Blessings, Dan

The summary from the group meetings of Second Church members to discuss their thoughts and hopes for

the future will be presented to the Session at its April 9 meeting. On that occasion reports from group

facilitator Rev. Darryl Baker and from three of our elders on what was heard in those meetings will be

shared and analyzed. Written copies of these reports will be presented in the June newsletter or may be

obtained in the church office.

On Sunday May 7 at noon in the Fellowship HallOn Sunday May 7 at noon in the Fellowship HallOn Sunday May 7 at noon in the Fellowship HallOn Sunday May 7 at noon in the Fellowship Hall, Rev. Darryl Baker and several elders will be present to

share these findings with the congregation as a whole. This will not be a formal Congregational Meeting

as no action will need to be taken. It will be a time to hear the summary reports and ask follow up

questions. The goal of these meetings has been to provide a glimpse from the congregation’s perspective of

where Second Church has been, is now and needs to be going so that a future Pastoral Nominating

Committee might use this picture to seek the next installed Pastor/Head of Staff. Thank you to all who

participated in this process.

In November 2015 women of Second Church hosted a brunch/auction to raise funds for Buckhorn Children’s Center. At the brunch, the women made quilt squares outlining their own hands and Joan Bush used the squares to make this quilt. Thanks to all the ladies who contributed their time, talents, funds, and prayers to create this beautiful quilt for Buckhorn. It is currently hanging in the Gathering Place until April 29, when we will present it to them with the following message: Though we are miles apart we are always holding you in our hearts.

• Save the Date for Saturday, April 29 - Buckhorn’s Rankin Cottage Workday. Sign up in the Gathering Place April 9 and April 23. Contact Nellie Wilkinson ([email protected] or 859-

summer!

We need group leaders to experience VBS with the children, people with crafting skills to lead crafts and

help decorate, game leaders, food helpers, and those with drama skills to help br ing Rome to life!!! If

you would be interested in learning more or volunteering to help, please contact Jen Brown

([email protected]).

Even to your old age and gray hairs, I am He who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you.

Lilies and blankets are $10 each; Note the amount given for lilies are not tax deductible.

EASTER LILIES

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING

One Great Hour of Sharing is one of our four annual special offerings of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) that will be received on April 9 (Palm Sunday). It funds:

Self Development of Peoples/Programs

Presbyterian Hunger Program

Disaster Relief

JUSTICE MINISTRY NEWS

Presbyterian Women of Transylvania Presbytery will hold the SPRING GATHERING at First Presbyterian Church in Lexington on Saturday, April 22.

The cost will be $12.00 for registration (this includes the lunch). Please contact Sandra Harrison (273-9375) for reservations no later than April 7th.

ATTENTION PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN!

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.' 1 John 3:18

• Nehemiah Action Assembly - Tuesday, April 25th from 7:00-8:30pm (doors open at 6:30) Heritage Hall

If we at Second Church can gather for worship 52 times a year certainly, just once a year, we can join our interfaith BUILD community to DO JUSTICE at the Nehemiah Action to hold our public officials accountable to do what is right, what is fair and what is just. For Justice is the heart of what God is and what God does.

If you and your family, friends, neighbors, co-workers are distressed about the ongoing gun violence, drugs and criminal activity that continues to cause pain and suffering in ALL areas of our city, the power of your presence April 25th, along with 2000 concerned citizens, is imperative to stop the violence and reclaim our neighborhoods. In 2016, Lexington had the highest homicide rate in over a decade! 101 shootings that left 81 injured and 24 dead. So far this year 5 deaths and reports of random gunfire throughout our city!

Too many of our sisters and brothers with mental illness still lack accessible, continuous mental health care. People are released from the hospital or jail, and then wait for weeks to be seen in outpatient care, especially if they are poor, because there's not enough resources available. About 500 homeless people in our city have mental illness. Yes, the power of your presence for "the least of these" is what Jesus expects us to do.

Second's Justice Ministry Team will provide a lite meal, 5:00-6:15. Lakshman will be making two trips to Heritage Hall (6 and 6:30). Please contact Bill or Fredda Moody ([email protected]), Judy Maxson ([email protected]) or sign-up on the bulletin board outside the office by noon on Sunday, April 23rd if you plan to dine and/or ride from Second Church.

• REMINDER to all 42 Justice Ministry Network Members: RALLY, Monday, March 27th, 7:00pm Consolidated Baptist

Please contact your Team Leader (Fredda, Bill, Catherine, Jim D., Judy M.) if you have any questions, concerns or need a ride.

All Church Retreat Saturday, April 1st (10:00 am-4:00 pm)

Cost: $10/person ($40 max per family)

Please join us for a day of fun, fellowship, worship, and relaxation at Camp Burnamwood! We have lots of great activities planned including games, hiking, arts and crafts, lunch, and much more! You can also just take time to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature!

If there are those who need a ride to camp, the bus will be available. If you would like to ride the bus, email Sara Benedetti ([email protected]). Sign up deadline: March 26.
