RABBI’S MESSAgE

Ilove the aromas and memories of our Passover holiday. Last year we celebrated in our sanctuary with more than eighty folks, and this year we will host close to

one hundred persons. Personally speaking, Pesach is about spring cleaning, rousing songs, tasty matzah ball soup, and morning matzah brei. But we know that Passover is more than a gustatory experience; it is about our freedom and the history of our people for more than three millennia. We recently read the stories of the exodus, the golden calf, and the building of the mishkan, the outdoor sanctuary in the book of Exodus. All these details explain the emergence of a new people, a people blessed with freedom and a destiny leading them to the promised land. Just remember, our biblical Passover story is told in sharp relief in thirteen chapters at the beginning of the book of Shemot.

Personal memories abound in my dreams of preparations from years past. First I recall changing our kitchen, with all the pots, pans, silverware and glassware for Pesach brought up from the cellar, to be washed and scoured for the great holiday. In our house we spent two days cleaning and preparing the kitchen for the first Seder.

As you know, commentaries and midrashim abound on the holiday themes. Take the Four Questions, first explained in the Mishnah text (second century). The four kashes of the Mishnah are quite different from the four questions we read in our Haggadah. Instead of the response, “we dip the herbs twice, in salt water and charoses,” the Mishnah gives us this reading: “on all other

nights we eat boiled, roasted, or cooked meat, on this night we eat only roasted meat.” The Mishnah speaks of roasted meat because of the ancient Temple’s sacrificial system, i.e. the slaughtering of animals which was our way of showing allegiance to the Almighty. This historical memory speaks to the ancient roots of Judaism, and the ways our religion has radically changed over the past two millennia.

Why on this night do we eat only matzah? What does the unleavened bread mean to us at this time? Does eating matzah make us more sensitive to the sufferings of our forebears? And why do we consume only bitter herbs, as prescribed in the Seder. How do we move forward in healing the bitterness and rage that appears to consume our

society? What about the inner bitterness that sometimes affects our hearts, in dealing with friends and loved ones? We are blessed with much prosperity and a future for a marvelous congregation, but truly a congregation is more than bricks and mortar. Building community means concerning ourselves with the welfare of those around us, in this city, and in Israel. Though the world is broken, as the Lurianic Kabbalah reminds us, our good deeds will help restore some harmony and decency to our world.

On this Seder night we will recline, to recall that we could enjoy the largesse of life as did the Romans of the first century. And why not recline? We deserve to relax and breathe the air of freedom. But we cannot rest on our laurels, there are many more good deeds that we have yet to realize. I trust that you will enjoy a warm Seder with friends and family, and remind yourselves of the deeper meanings of Passover. May we be blessed with good health and a renewed purpose to strengthen our Beit Tikva.

Hag sameach,

B’shalom,

Martin W. Levy505.670.4671

PRESIDENT’S MESSAgE

Our Vibrant Congregation

By the time you receive this issue of the Bulletin we will be entering the second quarter of 2014. What have we accomplished so far this year? First, and foremost,

Shabbat services are extremely well attended. It is highly unusual to have fewer than 25 members and visitors. By like token, we’ve had as many as 56! Those of you unable to attend miss a personal religious experience. Rabbi Levy’s D’var Torah teachings and sermons sure beat the Friday Night Fights (are there still such things?). If singing is your thing you’re missing Cantor Linder’s Shabbat liturgy and the congregation’s enthusiasm.

The 92nd Street Y programs have been wonderful. Not only the programs but the warmup bagels and lox. The committee working on the Y programs is reviewing next season’s selections.

Rabbi renewed his 7:30 pm Wednesday Adult Education Series this winter with “The Evolution of Jewish Thinking.” The 9:15 am Saturday morning Torah Study Class continues to draw an ever increasing number of students. There are no prerequisites from week to week. Rabbi and his students maintain a high level of interest and involvement.

Our building expansion is moving along on schedule. We are anticipating breaking ground by the end of April with an expected completion sometime in August. While we are in possession of the funds necessary to erect the addition we still need additional monies to furnish, acquire and install fixtures throughout. Further, work will need to be done to restore our driveway after heavy construction equipment tears things up a bit. Our thanks to Howard Aronow for his generous gift earmarked specifically for the driveway and parking lot. (It’s not the sexiest item to raise money for. I look forward to seeing how Gail will affix a plaque to a tree or shrub.) We are very fortunate in having Jeff Less as our Building Committee Chair. Thank you Jeff for your expertise and level-headed approach to this difficult undertaking.

Pesach is fast approaching. We are expecting a sell out crowd. I am writing this in mid March and we already have reservations for more than half our capacity. Don’t treat this as a wait-til-the-day-before Santa Fe activity. I look forward to seeing about 90 of you at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, April 15th. One more thing, please remember to indicate your main course selection: brisket or vegetarian.

FORE!! Be a swinger at our first golf outing and fundraiser on Monday, May 19th. Registration at Marty

Sanchez Links de Santa Fe is at 8:00 am, tee off at 9:00 am. Len Feiner is waiting to hear from you.

We undertook several other activities during the first quarter: a program by noted artist Gloria Abella Ballen; a book discussion of My Promised Land: Triumph and Tradgedy of Israel coordinated by Reggie Klien; participation in the Teddy Bear Project for the Solace Center coordinated by Joan Less; and under Sandy Levine’s leadership, we helped provide dinner at the Interfaith Homeless Shelter. We also enjoyed Shabbat Across America and a special Purim service replete with Shalach Manot food and drink gifts.

On the short side, this time last year more than half of you had renewed your membership pledge. Wish I could say that for this year. We are experiencing a cash flow squeeze. As a reminder, we, the congregation, voted to ask Rabbi Levy to assume full time responsibilities. In order to accomplish this your board and you at the annual meeting, voted (1) to hire Rabbi full time, (2) approved a budget which clearly reflected the amount of money we would need for fulfill our obligations, and (3) passed a 25% across the board increase in dues.

Many of you have stepped up, accepted the increase and made a dues commitment in a timely manner. We need the commitment to properly assess our monetary situation from month to month. Those of you who have yet to make your commitment for this year will be contacted by Rabbi Levy. We function at the generous participation of you, our members. Please return your dues letter pledging at least the amount for your status, single or family. Further, consider raising your giving to our premium or Rabbi’s Circle level. We have fundraising activities planned. Monies collected from fundraising fill in the gaps and enable extraordinary expenses. Congregation Beit Tikva only thrives if you, our members, do your part.

Congratulations to Phyllis Kapp!

Our congregant, Phyllis Kapp, has just received the Santa Fe Gallery

Association’s honorary “Artist of the Year” award. Phyllis moved to Santa Fe from Chicago twenty eight years ago. She opened her studio and gallery (Waxlander Gallery) on Canyon Road back when there were fewer than ten galleries there. Her gallery has grown, and now represents 32 different artists in addition to her own work. In selecting artists to represent, she is adamant about choosing artists whose works evoke joy. Her own artwork reflects her personal beliefs, and she draws her inspiration from Mother Nature in the southwest. Many of the titles of her paintings describe her feelings that the subject expresses (or, perhaps, celebrates). A few examples are, “Life is Good,” “With a Smile” and “The Stars are Shining Bright.” Phyllis also takes time out from painting to teach in schools spreading her joy of life. Phyllis feels as Americans we are very lucky to be in this country and be free to make the choices we have.

As you may know, Phyllis is also on Congregation Beit Tikva’s board of trustees. She is always willing to lend a hand to our congregation. Please take a moment to congratulate her when you see her. Better yet, stop by her gallery and see for yourself why she was named “Artist of the Year!”

Shabbat Across America 2014—Potluck and Service

Share Some Joy by Providing or Sponsoring an Oneg Shabbat

Actually, that headline is a bit of a pun, since “oneg” means “joy.” But we also know “oneg shabbat” as the buffet nosh that we gather to enjoy with

other congregants and visitors on Friday nights after services—and which gives us an opportunity to connect and schmooze.

We usually ask that each member (individual or family) host or sponsor one or two onegs during the year. There’s a form in your annual membership pledge packet, on which you can indicate dates you’d like to choose to do an oneg. There are lots of reasons to sponsor an oneg on a particular

date: a special happy event in your family, in memory of a loved one, or some other occasion you’d like to mark. Or, no reason at all, other than the convenience of the date on your calendar.

We honor everyone who provides or sponsors an oneg by announcing their names and thanking them that evening at services, and in the Congregation’s bulletin the next month.

Of course the main way to provide an oneg is to bring the food for the evening. But remember when that is impractical, you can also “sponsor” an oneg by providing funds for Beit Tikva to do the food purchase. In that case Barbara LaMont (Board member and our oneg coordinator) or her helpers will get the food, and set up the oneg before services begin. To sponsor an oneg we ask for a contribution of $50.

We do try to accommodate each oneg provider’s first choice of date. If more than one member/family would like the same date, we (that means Barbara LaMont!) often arrange for them to do it together.

Please consider providing an oneg to help celebrate the joy of Shabbat. Our onegs are a special time for us to share with fellow congregants old and new, and to socialize with visitors from out of town or, perhaps, new to Santa Fe. Remember if you can’t be there, you can sponsor one!

Contact Barbara LaMont at 982-0928 or [email protected] for more information and to sign up. If you haven’t sent in your membership pledge yet, please do soon so you can suggest at that time oneg dates you would like.

yom ha’atzmaut on Friday, May 2On Friday, May 2, 2014 at 6:00 pm, congregation Beit tikva will celebrate the anniversary of israel’s statehood with a pot luck picnic.

Barb and armon LaMont will provide hamburgers and kosher hot dogs and buns for the grill. the pot luck will be “picnic” favorites: potato salad, baked beans, desserts, etc.

the evening will include our Friday evening service and special music to honor israel.

Please remember there is a $5.00 donation per person requested to defray the costs of the set up and clean up team.

call Barb LaMont for more information or questions at 982.0928.

jewisH HisTorY

the Jews of kerala, southern india

Kerala is a state in India situated on its southwestern Malabar Coast. The ancient seaport of Cranganore or Shingly, as the

Jews called their settlement, was home to Jewish merchants since the 5th century exodus of Jews from Persia, through the 15th century, as Jews arrived from Spain in the 1400s and Dutch settlers in the 1600s. It is theorized that the first Jews may have come to Kerala even earlier as part of King Solomon’s merchant fleet. The tradition of the city of Cochin notes that Jews came there after the destruction of the second Temple in the first century and that tens of thousands of Jews were welcomed by the Hindu rulers of the times. Obviously it has been a center of trade for a very long time.

The Cochin synagogue was built in 1568, destroyed by the Portuguese, then rebuilt in 1662 by the Dutch. It is still standing. Although there were some intermittent times of distress from foreign invasion the Jews remained. In 1968 the synagogue celebrated its 400th anniversary. Under both British and Indian rule Jews have enjoyed religious

tolerance and freedom. Records show the continued contribution of Jews to the economic prosperity of the region.

However, with the establishment of the State of Israel many Jews left the area to pursue educational advancement and increased employment opportunities in the Jewish State. But their historical place of worship still remains and Cochin is visited by thousands of tourists each year. Photos are by Paula Eastwood, our designer, who recently visited the area.

“I spent four weeks in February/March touring India with my Vedanta philosophy teacher, Shubhraji, and a group of students from around the world. The tour ended in Kochi (Cochin) and I stayed for four more days in the historic colonial district of Ft. Kochi. I returned to the synagogue a few days after the group visited it, just to linger inside. Photography is not allowed inside the compound, otherwise I would have loved to share with you images of the beautiful ancient interior. It was one of the many highlights of my time in amazing India.”— Paula Eastwood

Congregation Beit Tikva, Hadassah and Civitan have completed our annual Teddy Bear Project for child abuse victims in Santa Fe. This year, we delivered 75 stuffed animals and 31 journals to the Santa

Fe Solace Treatment Center (formerly the Santa Fe Rape Crisis Center). Our effort was greatly appreciated because the Center relies on donations throughout the year. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month, and abused children interviewed at the Center cross all racial, religious and ethnic lines. We hope to continue this worthwhile project next year.

Monetary donations are always appreciated as are food staples such as canned soups, energy bars and packages of peanut

butter crackers. call the shelter (505.795.7494) to arrange a drop-off time for items or to inquire about volunteer positions.

Swing!Len Feiner has been doing extraordinary work securing raffle donations for our May 19th “Swing!” Golf Outing. There are gift certificates from The Ranch House, Raaga, Jinja, The Steaksmith, Swiss Bistro & Bakery, Harry’s Roadhouse, Santa Fe Bar & Grill, Tecolote, The Sports Authority. Callaway is providing four gift sets. Two Apache-made money clips were donated by Michael & Rita Linder from JewelMark. Additionally, there are gift certificates from Kia of Santa Fe and Trader Joe’s. All will be used for raffle prizes and each golfer will get one free raffle ticket in their gift bag at registration at the golf course. Or, you can purchase as many extra tickets as you like!

In addition, Valerie Frost has volunteered to donate $18 to the synagogue for each golfer who shoots par on the “Chai Hole” (the 18th hole) and $36 if anyone legitimately gets a birdie. Thank you, Valerie!
