What is Second Life?

A real time, massively multi-player interactive virtual world

A persistent, social environment A 3-D world on your 2-D computer screen A world where you are represented by an

avatar – and every avatar represents a real, live person

A place where you communicate by text chat, or via VOIP in-world




What do I need to know about Second Life, and how do I learn about it?

Second Life is owned by Linden Labs – it is not an IBM product. No discussion of confidential information should happen in Second Life.

You must have an avatar to participate in Second Life

You should practice with your avatar – the more you practice, the better you become.

Be courteous – there are real people behind every avatar.

Ask for help. Most people in Second Life will go out of their way to help you.

Complete your orientations, and be open to new experiences – you will see things in Second Life that are have no counterpart in Real Life. And many things that do.




Do they speak my language?

Second Life is international – you will meet people from all over the world, at any time of day or night.

A few terms you might see or hear:- SL = Second Life- RL = Real Life (where you are when you are not in

SL)- FL = First Life (see RL above)- Rez = making objects appear in SL- Inworld = occurring inside SL

Getting Started: Can you join?

Be sure you have the latest driver for your video card.

To update ThinkPad drivers, and for all support / troubleshooting for Second Life please go to the Virtual Support Gateway- http://w3.tap.ibm.com/w3ki08/display/LKVSS/Select+a+tool

Important Note: Some new ThinkPad models (such as the T400) have graphics cards which are not officially supported by Second Life; if you're using one you may get a warning that your computer does not meet the required minimum specification. Second Life may still work fine for you, but we strongly recommend that you go through the process of updating your graphics drivers.




Getting Started: Join the club

Setting up an account: Go to http://secondlife.com Click on the “Join” link in the upper right hand

corner.





Creating an account: It’s all about you

Fill in the information: Make sure you use

your IBM email address





Creating an account: Create your virtual persona

Name & password- Feel free to pick

any first name Try to use your

first name or something easy to pronounce!

- Choose a last name from the list

- Create your password





Creating an account: Create your virtual style

Choose whichever default avatar look suits you- Remember you can change it at a later time

Note: Changing your appearance is covered later in this presentation





Creating account – Finalize information

More fields to fill in: Choose security

Terms of Service Agreement

Click the “Create Account” button





Creating account – eMail verification

Check your email: You’ll get a message

with a link Click on that link to

activate your Second Life account- Known issue with trying

to register while behind IBM firewall

- Try registering at home if registering from office doesn’t work.





Download & install the software

After creating your account you should be prompted to download the client- If not go to http://www.secondlife.com/download




Logging in

Click Start, All Programs, Second Life Viewer 2

Use the name and password you created

Getting around

Walking, Running, Flying, Teleporting





Walk, run, fly … and jump

To jump, simply press the Page Up key once


Flying Push the Page Up key until you get to your

desired height, then use the arrow keys on your keyboard. Push the Page Down key to land

Or …click on the Move button, select the flying option to the left then click on the movement icons

Walking Use the arrow keys on your keyboard Or …click on the Move button, select the walking option

to the left then click on the movement icons

Running Tap the Up arrow key twice, or click on Ctrl+R, then

use the arrow keys on your keyboard Or …click on the Move button, select the running

option in the middle, then click on the movement icons




Teleporting

A much faster way of getting around. There’s a few ways to do it:


Double click on a landmark in your inventory. You will be prompted to teleport there

Hint: If you like a location and want to get back there easily, Click on World, Create Landmark here

Look for teleport boards. Click on the area you want to visit and you will be prompted to teleport there

Note: You can also use the Map function (covered later)

Go to your teleport history, double click on locations in there to return to them

Go forward, back, “Home”, or use the favourites bar- Drag and drop your favourite landmarks there- Create your own landmarks by clicking on the star on the

right hand side of the address bar




SLurl’s: Another handy way of getting about

SLurl = Second Life URL A web address that provides direct

teleports to locations in Second Life- Just paste it into your browser!

Examples:- Orientation area, BM Learning Commons,

Note: Create your own SLurl by copying your location from the “Address Bar”




Tired after all that movement?

Why not have a sit down?- You can sit on most objects in Second Life

not just chairs

- Just right click on it and select “Sit Here”- Click the Stand button once you’ve had your

rest!

Note: Some chairs work fine with just a left click. They may also have some preset camera views to help you see presentations etc



Communication

Talking, chatting, making friends & joining groups





Voice Over IP

Check your settings by going to the Sound & Media tab in the Preferences Menu (Ctrl+P)

You can also click on the Input/Output Devices button to alter your microphone volume and ensure you have the correct devices selected


Also: You can pause or mute streamed music at the top right hand side of the Second Life interface




Activating your microphone

Click on the Speak button

Microphone is ON if the button is illuminated and the dot is green

White dot above your head means VOIP is enabled

Green waves emanating from the dot means you’re talking

And OFF if not


Note: Remember to keep your microphone switched off when not talking!




Hearing other people

There are two ways to hear people better:1. Use your camera to zoom in closer to them (Camera controls covered later)

2. Adjust their volume individually. Click the arrow next to the Speak button

- Select the person whose volume you want to adjust, click on the information button next to their name and adjust the volume slider as required




Text chat: Communicate with everyone, or just someone

Public (Local) chat Simply type your message into the chat

area and press enter

Click the arrow to the right of the local chat area to view chat (and activity) history

Private chat There’s a few ways to do this, here’s the

simplest method:- Right click on their avatar and choose IM.

Enter your message in the box that appears





Friends & Groups

To add someone as a friend, right click on their avatar and choose Add Friend You can even personalise the message to them

You will be notified if / when they accept

Remember to look out for people offering you friendship

Note: You can also join (or be asked to join) groups. Right click on your avatar and select My Groups to see what you’re currently a member of





Once you’ve made friends

You’re notified by popup when they log in / out Open up your contact list by going to the People

tab on the right hand menu

Go to the My Friends tab. You can then…- See if they’re currently online- IM them or start a private voice call- Chek out their profile- Offer to teleport them to your location- Alter their permissions relating to you- … and much more

Note: Going to the My Groups tab gives you similar options, including IM’ing your group



Looking, location & searching

Viewing controls, maps, searching & environment





Camera Controls

Very important to master this. You will need to be able to “zoom in” on objects such as presentation screens etc. Remember also you can hear someone better if you zoom in on them


Basic Advanced Need help?

Click the View button and select from the many view / camera movement options




Map

Click on World, Map (or Ctrl+M)- See where you are in relation to

others- See your location co-ordinates- Copy the SLurl for your current

location to your computer’s clipboard

Hint: Double click anywhere on the map to teleport there





Mini-Map

Click on World Mini-Map (Ctrl+Shift+M)- The small box that appears shows your

orientation- The green dots are other people- Arrows pointing up are other people who

are higher up that you- Arrows pointing down are other people

who are lower down than you





The search bar

Located at the top right hand side Search for:

- People, Places, Events, Groups, Land Sales, Wiki

- … and all of the above

Example: When you search and find a person you can view various details about them

Amongst other things, you are also able to:- IM them- Offer to teleport them




Control the daylight

You can choose what time of day you want it to be in Second Life - Click on World, Sun- Select from the options available



The Material Stuff

What you own, how you look and expressing yourself





Possessions

Your inventory in SecondLife contains everything you own, sorted into folders- Just click on the Inventory icon on the right hand

menu

Build your inventory up as you go along, share items with friends

Just remember to keep your inventory organised- Create folders, rename items, move to folders etc.- The search bar at the top is useful as well

Right click on items in your inventory to activate / wear them- Or drag them over your avatar

You can even “buy” things in Second Life





Appearance: 2 ways to change how you look

Use / wear items from your Inventory- Clothing, body parts etc

Right click on your avatar and select Appearance- You have a full menu of options to work

with- Hint: Try the “Make Outfit” button


Warning. Be careful when removing items, you don’t want to end up underdressed. Try searching in your inventory for “worn” and you can remove items individually




Express yourself: Gestures & Speech Gestures

Gestures – a good way of expressing yourself- Just click on the Gestures

button and click on the one you want

- Or type the keyword text into the Local Chat bar Example: /clap

Caution: Be careful when using these because many of them make noise

Speech Gestures – to add some expression when you talk- Find the speech

gestures in your inventory

- Select them all- Right click and select

Activate Or drag them on to

your avatar

Now activate your microphone and watch what happens as you talk

Settings

Click Me, Preferences (or Ctrl+P) to view the default settings in SecondLife

Do you want peoples’ names displayed

above their avatar?

Choose from the tabs down the left

hand side

Note: Be careful when changing these settings. It can impact the performance of the tool. If in doubt, ask for help
