Genera.l

The front suspension unit. illustrated in Fig. 1, consists of No . 01'088-

member with integral suspension brackets. ll. tranSVerse loaf spring. telescopic

shock ab sorbe rs and the hub and s tub axle assemblies_ The cross-member. which

i s bo l ted direct to the chassis fra me, a l so carries the t~o radilltor mountin g

brackets and provides the mountin gs f or the stee rin g box aDd the heade r of the

"One-sho t" 1 ubrica ti on sys tom.

'rho transverse l ed spring passes through the cross-oember whero it i s

located by the round head of the centre bo l t in the spring, which fit s in u

locating bore in the base of the cross-mombe r. The s pr ing is bus hod at its

outer ends and is secured b etween two "U" pi aces and yokos b~· bo l t s nnd nut s .

Ri ght-hnnd and lelt-hand saf ety links and s traps are fi tted between the e nds of

the spring and cross-momber at the front. The inner ends of Ihe links and the

outer ends of the straps are secured by n sing lo high tensile stoel bol t and

s plit-pinned Dut to the extensions of each spri ng l e nf outer c lip, sec Fig.5.

The ends of the spring and the radiu s arms are attached to the s wivel pin s

of the stub axle a s semblies, (se e Fi g. J), the transverse l eaf s pring ncting a s

the lower links. and the rad i us arms forming the upper links . These joints are

enveloped in protective gaiters. The swive l pin is bushod a l i ls upper end to

complete the uppc r link and fit s in the bushed s tub axl e , while a brack e t for

the lower link is keyed to n taper at the bottom end of the sw iv e l pin. The

swivel pin end-float is controlled by shims fitted betweon its bottom bracket

No servicing of these units in the accepted sense is needed; in the event

of failure. fit replacement units . Occasional inspection is desirable to see

that the rubber bearing bushes at the top and bottom of the units arc in good

order; if they are worn or perished, fit replacement bushes.
