Seasons at the Lakes

One warm Summer morning when I couldn’t fall back asleep, I grabbed my cam-era and headed for the sunrise. I had a beautiful quiet time worshiping God in his creation at camp. I also captured the image below, one that I will never forget. In it the cross is seen before the sun, and yet the light of the sun swallows up the cross.

Immediately as I look at this picture I think of our Lord, especially of his death and resurrection. Before the joy of Easter morn-ing, we see Jesus betrayed, arrested, mocked, beaten, and crucified. In his death Jesus offered himself as a sacrifice for us, taking our sin upon himself and taking our place as the recipient of God’s wrath. Yet although Jesus humbled himself even to death on a cross, death did not have the final word. Now, whenever I see the sun rising I can’t help but think of the Son rising and what it means for me.

In Paul’s manifesto on the topic of the resurrection, 1 Corinthians 15, he instructs us that Christ’s resurrection is not just a nice ending to the story. IT MEANS EVERYTHING! Because Christ rose from the dead we can be assured that he conquered sin and death. Because Christ rose we know that we, too, will one day rise from the grave into eternity in the perfect

presence of God. Because Christ rose from the dead we can live a life in freedom from the fear of death and the guilt of our sin, that God might use us for his great purposes in the world to bring him glory.

“Death has been swallowed up in victory. Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting? The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 15:54-57

Jesus himself teaches his disciples about the need for his fast approaching death in John 12:24 when he says, “Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” When a seed “dies” it does so by giving life to the plant growing from it. As the plant grows it produces fruit and seeds. As the seeds fall from the plant the cycle continues.

When we celebrate Easter we remember how Jesus gave up his life and brought us life in the process. I pray that by God’s grace we would grow in faith, rooted deep in Christ, bearing fruit for God’s glory. I pray that we might follow Christ’s example and lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters, planting the seeds of the gospel that might grow into a whole harvest of people who put their hope and trust in the Lord. I pray that the joy of our salvation and the hope of eternal life would cause us to sing to God in worship, “Hallelujah! He is Risen!”

Happy Easter! from the IOLBC Staff

Here is what families are saying: ♦ “Thank you so much for an

amazing week and for ministering to me and my kids!”

♦ “Our counselor was fabulous, so kind and caring and loved on our children all week, we loved having her!”

Ingham Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp is known for serving youth and making Christ known to all for many years. But did you know that six weeks of the summer at Okoboji are devoted to family camp? It is a powerful week for all families, no matter how large or small the family. Each day begins with chapel, followed by “two hours of power” in which the adults meet with the speaker and the children do Bible study and activities with their counselors. There is also time each day for family devotions, free time and special activities for the whole family. And of course you can’t come to camp without en-joying hours of fun at beautiful West Lake Oko-boji and evenings around the campfire. Fami-lies may consist of a mom and a child and other families consist of three to four genera-tions all attending together. The number of families in recent years has been growing. In 2011 172 families joined us throughout the summer for a week of camp. We hope you and your family will plan to join us. There is still space available. More information and a registration form

can be found at www.okoboji.org

Special Occasions at Okoboji Jane Wiest, Retreat Coordinator

Camp was host to many events throughout 2011. We are open year round and each season brings different events. Winter brought groups here on most weekends as well as some for several days during the week. Many groups come at the same time every year. The camp has an annual Mar-riage Retreat in February and a Scrapbooking and Stamping retreat in March. March also brings a quilting retreat and fellowship. Spring brought four Recharge Weekends, led by our staff, for youth to come to camp and be recharged in their faith. Our facilities are continually used by several churches, religious organizations and other groups as a retreat facility. Spring also brought volunteers to camp to help with many projects to improve the camp facility. Summer of course is camp, camp and more camp. The weekends were busy too however, with reunion groups and families wanting to get away for the weekend and join us for Sunday worship at Okoboji.

We concluded the summer with a special wedding in our chapel. The bride’s parents were also married in our chapel many years ago. In preparation for the wedding, the chapel received the gift of new carpeting. That weekend was a busy one with our Quilt Auction and Scandinavian Feast going on at the same time. It was great! Fall brought more retreats taking advan-tage of the warm weather in the beautiful lakes region. October brought our Women’s Retreat, other retreat groups as well as the start of our Fall Youth Recharges. The Recharges continued through November and another Stamping and Scrapbooking Weekend was held. The weekend after Thanksgiving is the annual reunion of the Axman family who have been coming here for more than 25 years. December brings more time for our staff to fix what’s broken and start on new projects. A few groups brave the weather and come to camp. Our Neighborhood Dinner is a highlight each year as well as our staff reunion held every year to wel-come in the new year.

Others have given gifts this past year and we are also thankful for those. Some of those include:

• A smaller pontoon • A fishing boat • A telehandler • 2 vans • Small tractor

Already this spring we are beginning more im-provements. Some of those are:

• A new deck and retaining wall going on the north side of Christopherhaus.

• Remodeling Navaho cabin We truly are preparing some-one’s meeting place with God. Thank you to everyone who was and is involved! Praise be to God!

As we reflect back on the past year and think of all the physical spaces that have been improved or re-placed we give thanks to God and those He used to accomplish all of this. Congregations and individuals alike have given of their finances, time and talents in these projects.

• Fox and Crow cabins have been resur-rected from the dead and remodeled.

• Alta deck was refurbished and a new deck was put on the east side of Christopher- haus and Sunrise cottage.

• New carpet has been installed in the chapel.

• A new campfire worship circle has been constructed and is ready for worship this summer.

• Thomson lounge has been completely reno-vated.

• A new motor has been purchased for our large pontoon, and it is getting new seats and carpeting.

• In December we started remodeling Dakota cabin.

$30,000 has been established by Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Gruver, to match dollar for dollar the total cost of the $60,000 goal to remodel the bath house interior. Don’t miss out on these great opportunities for fellow-ship at Ingham’s events this summer! Retreating Opportunities at Ingham: This past season of camping saw an increase in scheduled retreat use at Ingham Lake Bible Camp. There are many churches who have established an annual tradition of confirmation retreats at Ingham. Our camp facility is the ideal place to host such a retreat where these congregation’s staff, youth sponsors, high school age peer volunteers and student/campers can come together for a great time of fellow-ship. The versatility of options both in large group gathering spaces, room accommodations, recreational choices and outdoor adventure enjoyment serves as a great partnership with these active churches. Other retreat uses include: Youth group retreats, Alpha group retreats, Women’s retreats, organizational teaching re-treats, family reunions, wedding and reception gatherings, church council retreats, conference gatherings, men’s groups and great volunteer service weekends. A unique option at Ingham is our RV/Camping area with many full hook-up sites available. Please call or email: Ingham Lake Bible Camp, [email protected], 712-867-4170 for info.

Activities and Improvements at Ingham Lake Jim Sunde, Ingham Director

To celebrate the Ingham 60th anniver-sary last summer we began with a worship service and then we com-bined the Hog Roast and Ice Cream Social into one big event to celebrate the day. We had so much fun offering a Worship service that we hope con-gregations will elect to join us again this summer to kick off the camping season together on June 3. The 60th event served 444 guests dur-ing the meal time, and the Chapel was filled for the Worship service. Many former summer staff, campers and supporters enjoyed a great day of reflecting on the years of ministry at Ingham. Our indefatigable Ingham Auxiliary and volunteers served the steady stream of attendees with smiles on their faces. All the delicious food was gifted by our generous vol-unteers to further the ministry of Ing-ham Lake Bible Camp for future campers. Campus improvements resulting from

the 2011 fundraiser included an exterior full remodel of the Recreation Building, im-provements for the Pool equipment and general main-tenance at Ingham. The new matching steel siding, slider windows, and doors for the Recreation Building make it look like an entirely new facil-ity. All the siding was gifted by

an insurance company and the win-dows were bought through the Habitat Restore. The overhead door was also donated. The re-use of materials from other buildings has given our Recrea-tion Building a very practical new life. Our thanks go out to the Ingham Aux-iliary for hosting the fundraiser which inspired these improvements. This year a challenge match of Page 6

ministry! I see God doing amazing things there and I can see him using the congregation to do amazing things. By Bryant (BJ) Corkins, YMT Bethany Lutheran Church in

Emmetsburg has three main youth groups. Each Wednesday there is an after-school program called Super Awesome Christian Kids. At this group we start with a meal and fellowship

time, do a Bible study, and play fun games. We also have done service pro-jects throughout the year such as raking at Ingham Lake Bible Camp, tying quilts for Lutheran World Relief, and caroling at the nursing home. Also on Wednesdays we have a high school group called Live in Faith Everyday, this group focuses mainly on Bible Study and fellowship. This sum-mer the high school group will be going on a mission trip. The third group at the church is not officially a youth group, but instead is a group called Young Adult Christian Fellowship. This is a new group this year that is designed for people who have graduated high school through people in their early 30s. The group meets every Sunday at 12:30pm in the church basement. We are hoping to ex-pand this group even more in the up-coming year and to include more people from the local college. By Kaia Jo Jans (cont. pg. 8)

Since this is my second year as the part-time youth director at Our Sav ior 's Lutheran Church in Jackson, MN, I have been blessed to witness great change in the youth program. When I returned in September

2011, I was pleased to find that they had hired an associate pastor who would be in charge of supervising my role. The new collaboration has been a huge success and is bringing about some changes in the way we tackle you th and fam i l y m in i s t r i es . For example, this year we are testing a small group design to our com-bined junior high and high school youth group called NINJA (Never Independ-ent, Need Jesus Always). Although there are several changes that we plan to make for the next year, we feel that this change in format has been benefi-cial, especially in the area of relation-ship building. This year we have learned more about who Jesus is, who we are because of Him, and how we can help make a difference for Him in this world. I am also in charge of leading music for the CrossTrainers Sunday School program on Sunday mornings, youth activities on Sunday afternoons, and Release Time and confirmation events on Wednesdays. I have really enjoyed working with Jackson and feel blessed to have been called to participate in their

The Youth Ministry Team at Ingham Okoboji is a team led by our Director of Programs, Dan Antoine, to do ministry both at our camps and beyond. A significant part of our YMT Ministry is to partner with congrega-tions to do ministry especially to youth. Over the years, these have included many congregations of several church bodies. The past two years, we have had YMT’s working in half-time youth ministry at Our Savior’s in Jackson, MN, and at Bethany in Emmetsburg, IA. Last summer, Harbor of Joy in Milford asked if we might provide staff for a new ministry to young adults in the lakes area. In each of these partnerships, a contract is signed with the congregation to provide leadership staff in the area they desire. We invite you to read about each of these YMT settings of the previous year. Maybe your congregation would be interested in a partner-ship like this!

Youth Ministry Team - Partners in Ministry cont. and help each other become salt and light of the world. This age is a crucial time in any-one's life. It’s a time for figuring out what you want to do with your life, deciding what is good in this world, and seeking to see if this God is the real God he claims to be. We have about 10 people who are a part of the group, and its so amazing seeing God work in their lives. We all go through struggles, and having a good community to help share those situations is very important. I wel-come anyone and everyone from ages 18 to any age, so if you know of anyone who is looking for a group to check out, the doors are open at Harbor of Joy. Worship is a new addition that starts at 6:45, then our discus-sion/message starts at 7:00 pm and wraps up around 8:30 pm. each Thursday. By Brenna Lantz

Harbor of Joy Lutheran Church, Milford - I have the great opportunity of leading UTKS, a young adult group that takes place every Thursday night at Harbor of Joy Church in Milford, located right across from Perkins. The purpose/goal of this

group is to create a different environment for young adults who feel its hard to get themselves to church. Sometimes the tradi-tional way of a church service doesn't appeal to them, like in the story of Acts when a teen-ager named Eutychus fell asleep during one of Paul's sermons. This caused the boy to actually fall out of a window to his death, but thankfully Paul was there with the Spirit of the Lord and brought Eutychus back to life. So, UTKS has a mission to know Jesus Christ,

is my Father’s world and to my listen-ing ears all nature sings and round me rings the music of the spheres.” Ingham’s campers discover the wonder of the true lover of life a little deeper, or in the case of many for the very first time, that their Almighty God came down from heaven to fill them with His grace and love. Throughout every experience at Ing-ham campers have their eyes and ears opened to the power of the living Word. Just as the old camp song “Living for Jesus” encouraged them to live a life every day committed to His praise. Memories continue to unfold today with campers who play hard, sing fervently, and listen caringly at devotional times, opening themselves to the calling from the Holy Spirit of Jesus to come and live an abundant life. Campers are drawn to the rich-ness of the Spirit which inspires each one to witness unto friends and strangers alike about the Joy of the Lord. There’s a l o n g i n g cult ivated here at Ingham to follow God’s plan in everything about ones future life, and to take that Spirit of Camp home with you filled to over-flowing. Joy rings out like the big Chapel Bell leading you through the day. Staff and campers alike are amazed by the power of the Word changing and renewing their lives. It’s witnessed and expressed often that the Word became flesh in camper’s lives through the Holy Spirit guiding them into foundations of Faith. Camp-ers are encouraged into an adventure (cont. pg.10)

This past year we commemorated sixty years of outdoor ministry at Ingham. Reflecting upon cherished experiences by campers and staff is easy to do for anyone who has at-tended camp here.

One of the volunteer builders who framed up Ing-ham’s cabins, it is told, had a special way of declaring a building was com-pleted. He would do a hand stand on the ridge of the roof to punctuate it was ready for use. This

playful spirit has been a part of Ing-ham’s lifeblood since its beginning. Mrs. Sylvester Berg saw families put-ting up their winter wood when the property was previously used as wood lots. Seeing how well the chil-dren of neighboring families played together, she envisioned the Ingham Lake grounds being used by God in the beauty of this secluded natural setting as a Bible Camp. A favorite memory for many campers and staff during “Nurseys” seven years on staff was her great sense of humor. One time during morning flag raising which marked the end of devotions, lo and behold under the American colors was also hanging Esther’s stylish bloomers blowing in the wind. As a former WWII Lieutenant Nurse she finally raised her eyes heavenward to honor the flag and with great surprise let out a wonderful scream which still echoes around camp to this day. She often stated that a sense of hu-mor is a prerequisite for all Ingham Lake Bible Camp staff. Ingham is a place where not just the rocks could cry out the name of the Lord, but all of creation sings at full volume. “This

2011 In the Black - Praise God and Thank the People! Rod Quanbeck, Executive Director

As we look back on the 2011 year, we always rejoice in lives that are refreshed and refocused in Christ! We rejoice that lives are changed for eternity through God’s grace! We thank God that many have a new sense of mission purpose in serving God with their lives. We rejoice that people came to camp and our programs, worshipped the Lord, had fun, were well-fed, studied the Bible, experienced Christian community, and advanced in the spiritual life – while they retreated.

Yet some camp supporters always wonder, and a few ask, “Did all of that great ministry get paid for?” We praise the Lord and thank God’s people, that all expenses of ministry in 2011 are paid! Great donations, strong family camp attendance, and growth in in-come from retreat ministry were all part of this! TO EVERYONE WHO WAS A PART OF THIS SUCCESS, WE GIVE YOU THANKS, AND WE THANK GOD FOR YOUR PARTNERSHIP! WE HOPE YOU WILL CONTINUE TO STAND WITH US IN THIS MINISTRY!

of following Him with all their hearts, beyond the boundary of Camp life, into His eternal kingdom. The Savior challenges all to follow His call into a life of service. Let the distractions of life go and drink from the living water of life. He sings with us, laughs with us, plays through His Spirit, awakens our senses to over-flowing and guides each unto that

As you make plans for final financial arrangements of your life here on earth, are you remembering to thank God for your many blessings? All that we have comes from God, and your final will and testament is a testimony to the world that you want to honor God in your life as well as in your death. Certainly, your church is a natural place to think of leaving a gift, and we hope you also consider remem-bering the ministry of Ingham Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camps. Estate gifts can be made through life insurance, through remembering the camp with a percent-age of your estate, or through a variety of other means. One friend of the camp is currently setting up a planned gift in memory of a beloved one to endow some camp scholarships to campers who need help. How would you like to leave a leg-acy? If we can be of assistance, do not hesitate to call Rod Quanbeck, Executive Director at Ingham Okoboji.

Well Day Camp 2011 turned out to be truly “Out of This World!” Each week we sent out up to four teams consisting of a well-trained Day Camp Leader and several en-thusiastic counselors to go all over Iowa and even into Minnesota to share about God’s “Out of This World” love for us through Christ and our “Out of This World” mission

to share Him with others. Our theme verse came from John 16:19b- “As it is, you do not belong to the world. But I [Jesus] have called you out of the world…” Over 1,200 elementary school aged children heard this good news all summer long through super songs, silly skits, Bible based activities

and studies, crafts, games, and more! But we’re not ready to stop the adventure yet. We are now gearing up for Day Camp 2012. Our theme is Alive: God’s Great Adventure. Our theme verse comes from 1 Thessalo-nians 5:10. This summer, get ready for an Indiana Jones style adventure as we explore how we are Alive to Follow, Alive to be Rescued, Alive to Seek, and Alive for a Quest. It will be an adventure your little adventurers won’t want to miss! If you have further questions about our Day Camp ministry, please contact me! Thanks for your support and prayers!

Rewind…August 6, 2010…Amie, a camper at Jubilee Music Camp, left with something she’d never had before, a faith relationship

with Jesus and an under-standing of God who goes with us everyday. Amie went into her sophomore year in high school with an enthusiasm for the Lord but an uncertainty of what to do next. Fast Forward…August 5, 2011…Amie left Jubilee Music camp with a renewed passion for follow-ing Jesus and a stirring in her heart about the next

step in her faith walk. Six days later I received a message from Amie say-ing, “The Holy Spirit is doing so much work in my heart right now, and I think I want to get baptized!” Amie had thought about it a lot over the last year, but had dismissed the thought. Now after coming back to camp she was excited about identify-ing herself with the body of believers and being obedient to Christ’s com-

mand to be baptized. Even though she had been plugged into a church’s youth group for the past year in her home town, Amie had a strong desire to be baptized at camp, the place where her journey began. Amie’s parents encouraged her to follow through on her desire and helped coordinate the event. Then, on Labor Day Sunday 2011, following the final camp worship service of the summer, Amie, her parents, and about twenty brothers and sisters in Christ went down to Lake Okoboji for the ceremony. Pastor Lee Laaveg and I helped perform the baptism. It was such a blessing for me to see Amie grow over the past year, and sharing in her baptism was a tremendous joy. Fas t fo rward…Summer 2012…Amie will join the summer staff as a junior counselor with a passion to share her testimony with others so they may know Him. Praise God for the work he has done in Amie’s life and so many more campers like her. (cont. on pg. 12)

over a few segments the rest of the day. I hoped the kids wouldn’t get too bored just listening, but I just felt right about it. That evening as we were hanging out at the beach party, I walked over to Jon and another camper who were seated on a bench looking out at the lake. After a moment, Jon turned to me and asked directly, “Who’s idea was it to listen to that drama today?” I thought I was going to hear how boring it was, but I simply asked why he wanted to know. His reply left me breathless and humbled. In his own words, “I surren-dered my life to Christ during that drama. I finally saw that it’s all worth it. I’m all in. It feels awesome!” When I think about campers like Amie and Jon, I am amazed at how God draws us each to himself in different ways. I am humbled to be a part of a ministry like Ingham Okoboji where God continually changes lives through the different camp experiences, and I pray that many more would have an opportu-nity to know Jesus Christ and in turn make Christ known to all.

God works in powerful ways at camp to reveal himself to people who are

focused on him, away from the dis-tractions of everyday life. That was the case for Jon, and it came in a very unique way. Jon had been to the

camp before a few times for our monthly Outreach nights which consist of a brief worship service and message, supper, and fun games. However, when he signed up for Senior High camp this past sum-mer, he probably had no idea what God had in store for him. The theme for the day was “Restored for Eternity” and I had some little activity and devotion planned that would help kids see their lives from an eternal perspective. But 6 minutes before I was to start I had an idea to share an audio drama that I hadn’t heard in over 6 years. I realized it was much too long for the short session we had there, but I de-cided at that moment we would listen to it
