Quotes for Reflection

Those who are quick to promise are generally slow to perform. They promise mountains and perform molehills. He who gives you fair words and nothing more feeds you with an empty spoon. People don’t think much of a man’s piety when his promises are like pie-crust: made to be broken. —Charles Haddon Spurgeon The most dangerous form of sentimental debauch is to give expression to good wishes on behalf of virtue while you do nothing about it. Justice is not merely words. It is to be translated into acts. —Theodore Roosevelt

GOD CALLS HIS PEOPLE TO WORSHIP

It is God Himself who calls His people to worship. We do not call ourselves, but it is the King who opens His gates and beckons us into His courts.

Gospel Invitation—Titus 2:14

Christ Jesus…gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all lawlessness and purify for Himself a people for His own possession who are zealous for good works.

Introit—Amazing Grace, Vs. 2

GOD SPEAKS TO HIS PEOPLE THROUGH HIS WORD The Bible is the means by which God graciously reveals Himself to His people—so we listen, read, and study with expectant hearts. God particularly entreats us in His Word to sing psalms. And while all Scripture is appropriate for hymns and spiritual songs, there is a specific exhortation for us to make use of the Psalter as the church’s songbook.

Psalm of Praise—O Sing Ye Hallelujah! (Psalm 147)

Text: Psalm 147, Paraphrase; Music: NOVA SCOTIA I, Henry Owen, 2007. Used by permission. Scripture Reading—Psalm 68:19-20; 26; 32-35

Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears us up; God is our salvation. Our God is a God of salvation and to God, the Lord, belongs deliverances from death. Bless God in the great congregation, the Lord, O you who are of Israel's fountain! O kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; sing praises to the Lord, to Him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; behold, He sends out His voice, His mighty voice. Ascribe power to God, whose majesty is over us all, and whose power is displayed in the skies. Awesome is God from His sanctuary; the Lord God of Israel—He is the one who gives power and strength to His people. Blessed be God!

Elder: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

Psalm of Praise—Sing Praise To God (Psalm 68)

Text: Scottish Metrical Psalter, 1650, Alt. Julie Tennent, 2013; Music: MURFREESBORO, Henry C. Haffner, 2014. The Reading of the Word—2 Corinthians 8:1-9

We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, 2 for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. 3 For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, 4 begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints—5 and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. 6 Accordingly, we urged Titus that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace. 7 But as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you—see that you excel in this act of grace also. 8 I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. 9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich.

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

CCLI #2844402 Text: The Psalter, 1912; Music: HOMAGE, Gregory Wilbur, 2010.

Sermon—A Manifestation of Grace

—Pastor, George Grant

GOD CALLS HIS PEOPLE TO CONFESSION, REPENTANCE, AND RECONCILIATION

The People of God respond to His Word by confessing their sins, repenting of their sinful ways, and seeking God’s favor through the reconciling work of Jesus, the Son of God.

Confession of Sin—from Psalm 51:3-13; James 1:22, 27

Pastor: Lord, we know only too well our transgressions, and our sin is ever before us. All: For we do not live as if the people around us matter; indeed, we live as if only we matter, as if only I

matter. Pastor: And so Lord, we come confessing. All: Against You, and You only, have we sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that you may be

justified in Your words and blameless in Your judgment.

Pastor: Behold, You delight in truth in the inward being, and You teach wisdom in the secret of our hearts. All: Purge us with hyssop, and we shall be clean; wash us, and we shall be whiter than snow. Pastor: Let us hear joy and gladness; let the bones that You have broken rejoice. All: Hide Your face from our sins, and blot out all our iniquities. Pastor: You called us to be doers of the Word, and not hearers only. This is pure and undefiled religion: to care for

orphans and widows in their distress. All: And to keep ourselves undefiled by the world. Pastor: Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew an upright spirit within us. All: Restore to us the joy of Your salvation, and uphold us with a willing spirit.

Assurance of Pardon— Ephesians 2:4-7; 19-20; Titus 2:11-13

God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Pastor: This is the promise of God. All: This is the Word of the Lord. Pastor: For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness

and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age. All: And so we await our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus

Christ. Pastor: Amen and amen.

HEAVENLY GIFT—EUCHARISTO As God beckons His people to the bounty of His table, they make joyous profession of their fealty to Him.

Profession of Faith—The Apostles’ Creed

We believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of Heaven and Earth,

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell. On the third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into Heaven and now sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

We believe in the Holy Spirit; the one holy church—both visible and invisible; The communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Sursum Corda Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. Leader: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to You, Father

Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth. Therefore, we praise You, Triune God, and we join our voices with the angels, the archangels, and the whole company of Heaven in this hymn of eternal praise:

WORDS OF INSTITUTION AND THE LORD’S TABLE

Having confessed our sins and made a good profession of faith, God's Table is open to all those “faithfully-fenced" members of the covenant community. Please come forward to partake of this means of grace. You may take the bread and dip it either in the cup of wine or grape juice.

GOD’S PEOPLE RESPOND IN GRATEFUL PRAISE, PETITIONS, TITHES & OFFERINGS Our praying, serving, and giving are essential aspects of worship. It is here that our faith moves from our heads and hearts into our lives and callings.

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Intercession—The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Hymn of Praise—Fountain Of Never Ceasing Grace

GOD SENDS HIS PEOPLE OUT

After calling His people into His presence, forgiving their sins, instructing them in His Word, and providing a foretaste of the marriage supper of the Lamb, God sends His people into the world to show His light in the darkness.

Benediction—from Revelation 1:4

Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come. Go forth in His great hope. Amen.

Worship Notes:

Orphan Sunday is an obvious time to sing the Psalms, for riddled throughout is evidence that God cares for poor and helpless, the orphan and the widow. Psalm singing brings us to the very heart of our God – it is both doctrinally and emotionally pedagogical. It teaches us to care for what God cares for. Rosaria Butterfield writes, “In singing the Psalms, in worship and in life, we always know where God is in our suffering. In singing the Psalms, we always have a song in our heart that provides us with direction, redirection, rebuke (when needed), and encouragement.” The Psalms do not let us disconnect temporal and eternal concerns, for the Lord is a Father to the fatherless, providing plenteous rain and salvation. —Nathan
