Season 2018

Season 2018 is an invitation to take courage from the familiar and use it to embrace some of the fresh, bold and adventurous shows that make this season one of the finest to date.

Newcastle artist, Angela Tarlinton, in Girl at the Bogey Hole (cover image) has captured the exhilarating sensation that is to open your arms, calm the fear and confront the ocean. This is the opportunity we put before you.

We take delight in inviting you to be brave and dive deeply into the current of bold new contemporary works and conversations while also giving you the chance to reconnect in the shallows with old friends, some of Newcastle's favourite companies.

Encourage a friend to wet their toe and join you on the annual journey of being a Civic Season subscriber. There is something for everyone, from adventure to escapism.

The Spiegeltent will be back in Civic Park presenting Blanc de Blanc, featuring the finest cabaret and acrobatic talent from around the world. And we showcase local talent and companies with director Cadi McCarthy's That Place in Between, an exciting work of physical dance-theatre from Newcastle's Catapult Dance.

Our commitment to younger audiences continues with Monkey Baa's Josephine Wants to Dance and The 78-Storey Treehouse - Andy and Terry's newest and biggest treehouse ever.

Last year, the Sydney Morning Herald recognised our Civic Theatre as one of the seven most beautiful theatres in Australia. We are indeed fortunate to have such a historic treasure, and I invite you to join us to experience the best in live performance in this iconic venue.

Welcome to Season 2018, a bold and diverse selection of live performance that will take you inside the experiences, cultures and stories of people and places.

Newcastle is a community that embraces the arts in all its forms and theatre is a major thread in our city's cultural fabric. We deserve to have the best in live performance brought to our doorstep and the Civic Theatre's Season 2018 does just this with a fantastic mixture of dance, drama, comedy, physical theatre, and incredible storytelling.

Civic Theatre is pleased to present a wide range of offerings throughout Season 2018 - old favourites, new experiences and contemporary stories that reflect on the issues of our time.

Long awaited, Bangarra returns with OUR land people stories, a triple bill showcasing the timeless stories of Australia’s cultural heritage.

Nyapanyapa, by Bangarra’s Artistic Director Stephen Page, is inspired by the beautifully textured paintings of Yirrkala artist Nyapanyapa Yunupingu, known as the buffalo woman. The kinship systems of Wiradjuri country are explored by dancers Beau Dean Riley Smith and Daniel Riley in Miyagan, and the true history of Sydney is uncovered in Macq by Jasmin Sheppard, a story which examines the two sides to Governor Macquarie.

Bangarra’s dance technique is forged from over 40,000 years of culture, embodied with contemporary movement. The company are internationally acclaimed for their powerful dance language, distinctive theatrical voice and striking soundscapes, music and design.

A comedy cabaret about losing parts of yourself and finding faith in an unexpected place.

And Lance Armstrong.

Reflecting on Daniel’s real life (and almost death) experiences, The Orchid and the Crow is a solo performance that is part story-telling, part-theatre featuring original songs. The show has received enormous acclaim and awards in Melbourne, Edinburgh and festivals all across Canada.

A unique, brilliantly clever and ultimately moving story that deals with rarely discussed themes while being seriously entertaining.

Josephine Wants to Dance is a brand new Australian musical based on the hugely popular picture book by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley.

When a ballet troupe comes to the sleepy town of Shaggy Gully Josephine learns that there is another way to dance – ballet. As the ballet company prepares to perform, Josephine sneaks into town to peer through the window as the dancers rehearse, watching for hours and hours as they perfect their routine. Will Josephine ever get to dance?

Perfect for young audiences from 4 to 9 years and their families, and brought to you by the team that created the award-winning Pete the Sheep, this hilarious new work brings to life a tale about a bush Kangaroo you’ll never forget!

David Grybowski eloquently writes, Quiet Faith is hallowed ground, a little bit like going to church, and a powerful voice for the faithful who actually practice what they preach. Whether you are a full-blown atheist, one of the flock, or a complete hypocrite, you will not leave the same as you entered.

From award-winning documentary theatre maker David Williams (Grace Under Pressure, The Table of Knowledge) comes a journey into the world of the quietly, progressively faithful.

Quiet Faith is a uniquely presented immersive theatre work for intimate audiences. The audience are seated inside the set, an extraordinarily beautiful installation designed by Jonathan Oxlade, and enveloped by a sound installation. The performers work in close proximity in and around the audience, making Quiet Faith a powerful experience that will linger in the mind, long after the performance is complete.

One man, one screen, one suit, one remote. One moment in time to define a lifetime - or face national humiliation.

Who am I…? written & performed by Newcastle's Russell Cheek (Castanet Club, The Einstein Factor) is the hilarious and true story of his dedication, perseverance and grit of climbing out of unemployed-actor poverty in the early 1990's via the all-Australian quiz show, Sale of the Century…!

Like a good car-wax, director Stephen Abbott, (aka The Sandman), nourishes and protects Russell Cheek, as he shares each harrowing moment of his attempt to become carry-over champion and take home the jackpot.

If you do want to find out who you are… being under this level of pressure, with so much at stake, is not a bad place to start looking…!

A mother’s loss. A nation’s obsession.

Filled with warmth, humour and heartbreak, award-winning playwright Alana Valentine explores our fascination with Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton, one of 20th Century Australia’s most iconic figures.

A mother accused of murdering her child, her claim – that her baby was taken by a dingo denied and discredited; the media circus; the rumours and the mob mentality; and a nation’s prejudices laid bare.

Over three decades, from baby Azaria’s death to the final coroner’s report, the public wrote more than 20,000 letters to Lindy Chamberlain. From sympathy to abuse, from children as well as from those who have lost a child, these letters traverse the gamut of human response to Lindy’s story.

Letters to Lindy draws on this correspondence, as well as extensive interviews with Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton to create an enthralling, moving, and long overdue dialogue between Lindy and the nation.

Tash and her Dad are going on a road trip. Home to country, where the sky is higher and the world goes on forever.

It’s a long way from the wide streets and big old houses of Tash’s childhood. Two black faces in a very white suburb. Dad still thinks he’s the king of cool, but he’s an old fella now. It’s time for Tash to take him home.

ILBIJERRI Theatre Company tells stories about what it means to be Indigenous in Australia today. Infused with humour and heart Which Way Home draws on writer Katie Beckett’s own memories of growing up with her single Aboriginal father.

Madame Butterfly is a love story that reaches across cultures, across oceans, across time.

U.S. Naval officer B.F. Pinkerton is ashore in Japan, and enchanted with its beauty and freedoms. He decides to take a wife, and when the gorgeous geisha Butterfly arrives, he is transfixed by her charms. She falls hopelessly in love, and a passionate marriage begins.

Years later, Pinkerton has returned home. Abandoned by her family, Butterfly waits faithfully for her husband to return. Dawn breaks on a ship in the harbour. What will become of her great hope?

Puccini’s popular opera inspired the musical Miss Saigon. It is filled with gorgeous music, from the lovers’ first rapturous embrace to the intense finale. It features the famous aria 'One Fine Day' and the Humming Chorus, along with Japanese and American musical themes.

One of Australia’s greatest theatrical minds, Newcastle's John Bell, directs this English-language production, complete with beautiful costumes and sets.

Ten acrobats take us on a stirring journey of what it means to be human, and of how our bodies, our connections, and our aspirations all form part of who we are.

Exploring the physical limits of their bodies as they are pushed to the extreme they question, as humans how much we can take.

How much weight can we carry? Who can we trust to support our load? They lead us to reflect on our lives, our loved ones, the burdens we carry and the physical and emotional strength it takes to overcome them.

Circa's reputation for fearless, boundary-pushing new circus is borne out in every one of their shows, which combine physical virtuosity with an expressive humanism.

The music stops………..The horror when the lights come on. What do you do next? The wheels still spinning………….The incessant dialogue racing…….There is an all- consuming myriad of possibilities just beyond reach…..Is this a turning point? The story is yours…. Start writing.

Award winning local Choreographer Cadi McCarthy brings this exciting new dance-theatre work to life, unravelling the emotional turbulence that rises from periods of transition. Where situations have arisen out of our control.

Based on a series of characters, That Place In Between looks at the games we play to cover insecurities, the facades we develop to conceal our real identity, and the masks and devices we use to deal with the tenuous world around us. Featuring an outstanding dance ensemble, Catapult will launch this explosive new work in Newcastle before it goes on tour.

“ It’s like catching up with an old friend for a well-earned laugh.” Aussie Theatre

The punchlines keep rolling in.

Those indefatigable kings of comedy, sorcerers of satire and masters of mockery, Jonathan Biggins and Drew Forsythe are back in the saddle and gearing up for another glorious year of political satire – the Sydney Theatre Company production will be bigger and so will the laughs. We like to think of it as continuity with change.

So, politicians take cover and pundits stand back, because there will be songs, there will be dance, and there will be some very funny impressions.

Join us as we sort the wets from the dries, the leaks from the fakes, and the factions from the fictions in this bigger, better and wharfier Revue than the Wharf could ever handle.
