The VC-4 consists of a 9-row by 261-column payload structure withthe first column allocated to VC-4 path overhead (POH).

The STM-1 format consists of an AU-4 and section overhead (SOH).The AU-4 has a fixed phase relationship with respect to the STM-1 frame. The AU-4 pointer is located in the fourt row of the first nine colums of theSTM-1 frame between the bytes of the SOH. The remaining 261 colums of the STM-1 are allocated to the AU-4.

The phase of the VC-4 is not fixed with respect to the AU-4.Threfore the location of the first byte of the VC-4 with respect to theAU-4 frame is given by the SU-4 pointer.

u Introducing new STM-1 modem together with existing RF equipment (Equal or less BW than the 140 Mb/s PDH radio).

u 128 TCM modulation needed to limit the bandwidth.

u Both 140 Mb/s PDH and STM -1 data interface, electrical and optical.

u Can be used as MST and RST.

u Automatic N+1 protection switching for both STM -1 and 140 Mb/s interface.

u Integrated supervision system with on-line monitoring of transmission quality and system status.

u Interface to TMN with Q - protocol.

u Compact slim-rack design which easily can be expanded with more channels.
