#Poverty Aberdeen Poverty in Aberdeen is so much more than a #Hashtag. This was clearly demonstrated last week during the first localised social media campaign which was run as part of National Challenge Poverty Week 7th -13th Oct.

ADVERTISING

The ‘selfies’ shared were collated through the #PovertyAberdeen element of a very busy twitter thread, we hope we captured everyone involved. We would like to take this opportunity to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone who took part in Challenge Poverty Week, whether locally / nationally ( or both !). It has been such an incredible week - all thanks to your support ! Locally over 50+ individuals and organisations have taken part, nationally this was more than 300 organisations. Supporters included faith leaders, local authorities, schools, football clubs, businesses, politicians, trade unions, third sector, public sector, think tanks and community activists. An amazing variety of supporters that have added their voices to the campaign asking for more radical action to loosen the grip of poverty on people’s lives. For a glimpse of some of the local activities, please see the twitter feed: #PovertyAberdeen If you haven’t seen the Challenge Poverty Week campaign animation yet, then please take a minute to view it here https://vimeo.com/359290385/f1e7942f39. Please also feel free to download and share it as appropriate. The animation is designed to be used well beyond the week, as are the hashtags #ChallengePoverty and #AyeWeCan. Challenge Poverty Week is over, but the challenge is far from over. It has certainly got people sharing, thinking and talking. Please continue taking action to solve poverty - read this thread from Poverty Alliance for clear and practical ideas on what to do next: https://twitter.com/PovertyAlliance/status/1183764265582432257 The outcome from this campaign has to be a renewed purpose to work together and address poverty in our communities.

Global Study Of 1.3 Million People Points to Downward Trend in Generosity

A 10-year global study that surveyed more than 1.3 million people reveals that despite a growing culture of charitable giving across dozens of countries there has been a recent downward trend in giving behaviour in some of the world’s wealthiest places.

The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) World Giving Index 10th edition report examined aggregate data for each country across 10 years (2009-2018), drawing on surveys in 128 countries in order to capture longer term trends.

The survey asks if people have helped a stranger, given money or volunteered for a good cause over the past month. The report identifies the 10 most generous countries over the decade of research, along with the 10 least generous. It also lists the biggest risers over the course of the study and those countries that have dropped the most during that time.

The United States of America is the world’s most generous country and seven of the 10 most generous nations are among the world’s wealthiest but the top 10 list also includes less affluent nations such as Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

But despite the scale of generosity, the report also identifies a recent downward trend in donations in key countries with long histories of philanthropy and household charitable giving, including the UK, USA, Canada, Ireland and the Netherlands where levels of individual giving are now lower than they were in the aftermath of the financial crisis.

In the UK (ranked 7th overall), its place on the World Giving Index peaked in 2011, 2013 and 2015, echoing the trend in other large economies and the findings in CAF’s UK Giving report released earlier in 2019. The UK Giving report found a three year decline in the number of people giving to charity, although the overall amounts raised were stable as those who did give, gave more.

This year’s examination of a decade of giving is being released in the lead up to #GivingTuesday – December 3 – the global day of giving that follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday and encourages people to give their time, money or voice to a good cause.

ACC Consults with Parents and Carers over the Expansion of ELC Aberdeen City Council has launched a consultation on the future of Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) provision in the city.

The Council would like to hear from parents, carers and potential parents on the plans to extend the current provision from 600 to 1140 hours in August 2020 for all three and four-year-olds and eligible two-year-olds.

The consultation, which runs until Friday 1st November includes an online survey followed by a series of focus group meetings and parent and carer information evenings. Information will also be shared regularly on Aberdeen City Council’s website, on social media and through partners, community groups, locality events and electronic events.

Fiona Lawrie, Early Years Service Manager for Aberdeen City Council, said: “This is an exciting time as we look forward to expanding funded early leaning and childcare services from 600 to 1140 hours per year by 2020. We recognise how the expansion of ELC can play its part in improving long term outcomes for children and families and help us achieve our LOIP ambition of reducing the poverty-related attainment gap and ensure that Aberdeen is a place where everyone can prosper.

“We really welcome this opportunity to hear the views of parents and carers which will play an important role in shaping how we progress towards roll-out of the service expansion next year. It is important that we take families and communities with us on this journey and everyone’s voice will be listened to throughout our extensive consultation and engagement programme over the coming months”.

Under the new proposals, parents and carers will have more choice on when, where and how they use their child’s funded ELC entitlement with a variety of settings available, including council nurseries and associated sites, private funded providers and childminders. Each of these will offer high quality ELC provision.

The extended hours are an entitlement not a requirement so parents can choose to take all or part of the hours available to them. Among the suggested flexible models are a full day provision, a half day (morning or afternoon) offering or a blended approach of council and funded provider / childminder.

Aberdeen City Council is adopting an area by area approach, prioritising the areas of greatest need and will adopt a flexible approach to the provision of expanded services to help ensure needs are met.

To comment on the consultation go to Aberdeen City Council’s Consultation Hub: https://consultation.aberdeencity.gov.uk/operations/early-learning-and-childcare-parents-survey

The online survey closes at 5pm on 1 November.

Housing First Europe – Latest Report

The Housing First Europe Hub latest report, titled An Overview of Implementation, Strategy and Fidelity, describes Scotland as the most advanced in the UK in its approach to Housing First.

The results of the study make clear that in most countries for which there is available data, Housing First is becoming more widespread. In some progress is slow, whilst others including Scotland are beginning to make rapid progress. Finland continues to be regarded as the gold-standard in terms of a successful, universal Housing First approach.

The report notes the significance of Scotland being the first part of the UK to adopt a national policy position and that it will be developed locally through Rapid rehousing Transition Plans. As the report covers the position across Europe at the end of 2018 it does not capture any developments this year, which means that the very significant progress made during 2019, with around 130 people in tenancies, is not reflected in their data section.

For more information and to read the report visit Housing First Europe

Child Poverty in Scotland - Research Participation Opportunity

My name is Fionna Miskelly and I was previously Chair of GREC – Grampian regional Equality Council as well as continuing to be a lifelong supporter of the work of GREC. I’m presently undertaking a PhD at Edinburgh University which is looking at child poverty in Scotland and trying to find different ways to address this. As part of this project I want to propose some changes to the present child maintenance process.

I am keen to talk to parents who have experienced claiming child maintenance - good or bad - and also those who have chosen not to make a claim.

Each interview will be anonymised and all information given in confidence. I just want to hear real experiences to inform my project. I can’t pay you for your time but could give you a small gift voucher as a thank you. Each interview will be held in November, will last approximately 1 hour at the most and will take place at GREC or a city centre coffee shop if easier for you. Please let Jackie at GREC ([email protected]) know if you are able to help and I look forward to meeting you in November.

Please help me to propose changes to the existing child maintenance system which will help the children of Scotland. THANK YOU!

Trust the Facts. Get the Vaccine

NHS Health Scotland and the Scottish Government are launching a brand new campaign highlighting the seriousness of flu and the importance of getting the flu vaccine. Flu is much worse than a bad cold. It’s a highly infectious disease, with symptoms that come on very quickly and it can hit anyone. In the most serious cases, flu can bring on other complications, which means people with flu may have to go into hospital, or could even die. Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer recommends children, those with a health condition, people aged 65 or over and healthcare workers should get the free flu vaccine every year.

If you’d like to raise awareness amongst your members or supporters, NHS Health Scotland are providing a range of materials available to help with this, including social media posts, intranet copy, campaign images, leaflets and posters.

To get involved and request materials visit the website or email NHS.

Freedom of Information Extension of Coverage Consultation

This consultation will help the Scottish Government to understand whether there is a need to extend the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 to further entities by making an order under section 5 of the Act.

It focuses on organisations that provide services on behalf of the public sector that are not currently subject to the FOI legislation.

In June 2018, the Scottish Parliament agreed the Scottish Government should consult on proposals to further extend coverage of Scotland’s freedom of information legislation, for example, to companies providing services on behalf of the public sector.

The Scottish Government subsequently included a commitment to consult on extension in its Programme for Government 2018-19.

This consultation seeks to establish the potential range of persons who may be identified as providing services on behalf of a Scottish public authority and to inform how the Ministers might prioritise designating them.

Consultation on Malicious Disclosure of HIV Status

HIV Scotland has launched a consultation to understand the full diversity of views from people living with and affected by HIV, organisations that support people living with HIV and legal professionals regarding the threat of, or actual, malicious disclosure of someone’s HIV status and whether this should be regarded in law as a hate crime or criminal offence.

We have heard from a number of people living with HIV who have been affected by this kind of behaviour, causing problems at work or with relationships caused by the continuing stigma that is so prevalent. We are often asked if there is legal recourse for people who feel they have been a victim of this kind of crime.

With the upcoming Hate Crime legislation that was announced in the Scottish Government’s Programme for Government, we are running this consultation to understand whether HIV Scotland should campaign to include this as an offence.

The consultation will be open until Monday 2nd November. Written attachments can be submitted by email to [email protected].

Teenager Features in Cancer Support Charity Video

An 18-year-old Aberdeen girl has featured in a charity video to share her experiences after her father passed away.

Sarah Fraser, from Dyce, agreed to take part in the latest video from cancer support charity CLAN, to tell people about the support she has had from the Aberdeen-based organisation.

Sarah’s father Garry was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2018, and Sarah went along to CLAN for support with her mum and dad. The family were informed of the Children and Family Service offered by CLAN, which provides emotional and wellbeing support for children and young people affected by cancer. Sarah was struggling to understand her emotions surrounding her dad’s diagnosis and was experiencing difficulty coping with the impact of his illness.

Sarah and Garry shared a love of swimming and had a very close relationship. Sarah has competed since a young age, and her father was actively involved in her swimming career and became a timekeeper and judge for Scottish Swimming.

Kellie Strachan, children and family’s practitioner at CLAN, met with Sarah at her school, and at Sarah’s request facilitated a discussion with Sarah’s friends to help them understand what their friend was going through.

CLAN has produced a series of videos throughout the year, featuring people who have been supported by the charity and who wanted to give something back by sharing their experiences. Sarah and her mum were keen to be involved. The video, which has been produced in partnership with Hydrasun, is shared on social media and the charity’s website, to give clarity around what CLAN can offer to individuals impacted by cancer and to encourage anyone affected to access CLAN for support.

Sarah said: “I am so grateful to CLAN for their help from the time my dad was diagnosed with cancer, through his treatment, and subsequently when he passed away. Kellie has helped me understand my feelings and emotions and realise that my reactions were normal. We meet regularly and I can talk to Kellie about anything - I can release my emotions and have a cry, but we also talk about normal things like holidays and parties.

“CLAN has helped me cope with what has happened but also supported me moving forward. When it comes to moments in the future when my dad won’t be there to celebrate with me, like birthdays and events like graduating and getting married, I know CLAN will be there to support me.”

Now a member of CLAN’s Young Ambassador group, Sarah is helping at fundraising events and encouraging other young people to seek support from CLAN if they are affected by cancer.

Iona Mitchell, head of cancer support services at CLAN, commented: “We are so grateful to Sarah and the other courageous and generous individuals who have featured in our campaign videos throughout the last 12 months. Facing a cancer diagnosis is devastating, and children and young people particularly can experience real difficulty making sense of the complex emotions that may arise.

“Our trained and skilled practitioners offer a dedicated, confidential service providing a safe space where they can explore their emotions. We aim to provide tailored support to children and young people to empower them to develop coping strategies, increase their understanding of their emotions and improve relationships and communication which in turn goes a long way to engender resilience at a time of adversity. Cancer can be very isolating, and we help families to communicate and understand each other’s needs.”

Sarah’s video can be seen at www.clanhouse.org

Implementing Restorative Justice in ScotlandEdinburgh 29 November 2019Time: 9:30am registration, 10am start, 4pm finishVenue: St Trinnean’s Room, St Leonard’s Hall, 18 Holyrood Park Rd, Edinburgh EH16 5AYCost: FreeEvent organiser: Dr Steve Kirkwood, Senior Lecturer in Social Work, The University of Edinburgh.Email: [email protected]

The Scottish Government has committed to make restorative justice widely available across Scotland by 2023 and has published an action plan to support this. At present, the availability of restorative justice in Scotland is still relatively limited and variable across the country. This workshop is intended to support professionals in criminal justice social work and community justice to design, plan and implement restorative justice services across Scotland.

Contributors have extensive local and international expertise regarding the design and implementation of restorative justice. The morning session focuses on the possibilities for the design and implementation of restorative justice, international evidence on effectively implementing restorative justice, and exploring the potentials and challenges for implementing restorative justice in Scotland. The afternoon session will be highly interactive, drawing on design thinking and restorative practices to help participants work through the design of restorative justice services.

Your participation in the workshop will also contribute to the development of a ‘toolkit’ to help you design and implement restorative justice services in your area. The event is free. Lunch, tea/coffee and other refreshments will be provided. We expect high demand for the event and there are limited places to please register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Please note that the venue is not fully accessible – there is step access into the building. If you may require any assistance with accessing the venue, please email the event organiser.

RIGHTS IN RECOVERY EVENTRobert Gordon University Aberdeen – Wednesday 23rd October – 9am–5pm “Everyone has the right to health and to live free from the harms of alcohol and drugs.

Everyone has the right to be treated with respect and dignity and for their individual

recovery journey to be fully supported. This strategy is, therefore, about how we best

support people across alcohol and drug issues - taking a human rights-based, public health

approach to ensure we are delivering the best possible care, treatment and responses for

individuals and communities.”

Ministerial foreword to Rights, Respect and Recovery But what is a ‘rights-based’ approach in practice and what does it mean for all of us? These

events are designed to begin to answer these questions.

With presentations from academics, human rights practitioners and recovery organisations

- and plenty of opportunity to talk through the issues in workshop settings – these Rights in

Recovery events are the starting point for a conversation we all need to have.

We meet in rooms 4/5 of the learning zone on level 2. All of us on the committee are living with chronic pain; most have limited mobility and often other chronic health conditions. Due to this we struggle with some of the more physical tasks in relation to the meetings.

We would like to have a volunteer that has a degree of physical fitness to assist with the following tasks:1. Version 2.0 19/12/18 BeanGood Study

Bean Good studyThe UK is a major producer of broad beans in the world and is an important pulse crop for our economy, agriculture and nutrition. During milling the outer skin of the broad bean is removed (the hull), and this is an underutilised secondary product which is similar to wheat bran and rich in fibre and nutrients.

We are recruiting • Healthy men and women aged 18-75 years• Normal weight to obese (BMI 23-35 kg/m²)• Non-smokers

In this study we want to see if broad bean hull can be used as a novel functional food for improving blood glucose control and gut health.
