Directions for questions 66 80: Read the passages given below and answer the questions with the mostappropriate choice.

    Passage 1

Buddhism is an Eastern religion, but Buddhism is also considered a philosophy, because there's much

more to Buddhism than meeting in a church and praying. Buddhism involves all facets of life. Whileother religious traditions are meant to include all life activities as well, they often fail to actively addressthat issue in the way that these issues are addressed in Buddhism.

The Buddha teaches that, in order to reach enlightenment, a person has to shun all material objects. Thatincludes ties with relatives and friends. The seeker of enlightenment must also be aware that the humansenses are deceptive. Being alone, in both body and mind, is the only way to reach true enlightenment forthe Buddhist. There is generally no mention of any god in Buddhism. Some view Buddhism as aphilosophy as opposed to a religious teaching.

There is a strict, prescribed path that must be followed. Despite this, the respect that Buddhist individualshave for others is still very strong, and the way they shun material issues stops them from being greedy,

envious, covetous, or having other "traits" that would be seen as undesirable in many people. Since this isthe case, they are very able to show a great deal of respect toward their fellow human beings. The main point of the Buddhist teachings is elimination of suffering. The material world is all suffering, since people are constantly afraid of things such as death, disease, and old age. The only way to be freefrom all this suffering is to work toward a total, deep, inner calm. The Buddhists believe this calm can beachieved and after it has been, the one who achieves it, when he dies, will not be reincarnated again. Theysay this person will gain a blessed calm and he will be reborn no more.

While rebirth is generally thought to be a religious issue, the calmness and lack of fear and suffering thatBuddhists work toward tie into philosophy more strongly than religion. Plato, for example, alsocontemplated human nature and the issues behind truth, justice, and peace. Buddhists meditate by, amongother things, keeping to the self, both physically and in the mind. It is said that the body has to go into

seclusion first, because it makes the detachment of the mind easier. Although meditation is not the samething as prayer, devout Buddhists are clearly shunning the everyday things in the search for somethingmore meaningful, just as both philosophers and religious advocates have done for centuries.

The contemplation and relaxation that often accompanies Buddhism makes many of these people verycalm and tranquil. They look at things from the larger picture, and they don't worry too much about smallthings, because they're convinced these things will sort out in the end. The Buddhist would usually ratherexamine a scenario from many different angles before he actually make a decision about what the bestthing is to do in any given circumstance. This opinion of tranquilly and examination both of the selfand others helps the Buddhist to show respect to society that he might not otherwise have feltcomfortable with.

No definitive stance is available on whether Buddhism is completely a religion or completely aphilosophy, as it seems to mix traits from both of those areas. A lot of information into the teachings ofBuddha and how to follow him if one wishes to can be found online. However it's classified, Buddhism

brings peace and joy and tranquility to its followers, which is something they value and are willing to takethe time to seek out. That makes it beneficial to those who follow it, regardless of how it's classified.

    Passage 2

To survive in hostile environments, cockroaches rely on their own vermin: Blattabacterium, a microbe

that hitched a ride inside roaches 140 million years ago, and hasnt left since. Researchers who sequencedthe Blattabacterium genome have found that it converts waste into molecules necessary for a roach tosurvive. Every cockroach is a testimony to the power of recycling. Blattabacterium can produce all of theessential amino acids, various vitamins, and other required compounds from a limited palette of metabolicsubstrates, write entomologists in a study published Monday in the Proceedings of the NationalAcademy of Sciences.

Researchers have known that cockroaches need the microbes to survive: Kill Blattabacterium withantibiotics, and the insects die. They also knew that roaches store excess nitrogen one of lifesessential elements, needed to make proteins, amino acids and DNA inside their bodies, in tiny depositsof uric acid. But researchers didnt know exactly what became of the uric acid after it was stored, orprecisely what Blattabacterium did. Sequencing the microbes genome made the links clear. The microbe

contains genes that code for enzymes that break down urea and ammonia, the components of uric acid.Other genes instruct the microbe to take the resulting molecules and use them to make amino acids, repaircell walls and membranes, and perform other metabolic tasks.

This allows cockroaches to subsist on nitrogen-poor diets, an ability critical to the ecological range andglobal distribution of the cockroach species, write the researchers. And what a range it is: There arenearly 5,000 species of cockroaches, spread on every continent, even Antarctica. At this point incockroach evolution, roaches are utterly dependent on Blattabacterium, said Kambhampati. Theyve lostthe ability to produce their own amino acids, like other animals do. They cant live without the bacteria,he said. That raises the possibility of designing pesticides that somehow interfere with the function ofBlattabacterium, rather than directly killing cockroaches, Kambhampati said. But he doubted that anysuch pesticide would work for long before resistance developed, and seemed glum at the prospect of his

research being used to exterminate an animal thats proved so fascinating to study.

Theres about five or six species associated with humans, and unfortunately they give a bad name to the4,900 species that live quietly in the forest, said Kambhampati.

    71. Which of the following is the central theme for the passage?1. Attempts to kill bacteria.2. The ability of cockroaches to survive.3. The life cycle of a cockroach.4. The life environment of bacteria.

    72. Which of the following is the author most likely to agree with?

    1. Bacteria are very close in structure to insects.2. Nitrogen poor diets are essential for insects.3. Anti biotics may eliminate cockroaches.4. Cockroaches are extremely resilient to hostile conditions.

    Passage 3

Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody

else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born (as Ihave been informed and believe) on a Friday, at twelve oclock at night. It was remarked that the clockbegan to strike, and I began to cry, simultaneously.

In consideration of the day and hour of my birth, it was declared by the nurse, and some sage women inthe neighbourhood who had taken a lively interest in me several months before there was any possibilityof our becoming personally acquainted, first, that I was destined to be unlucky in life; and secondly, that Iwas privileged to see ghosts and spirits; both these gifts inevitably attaching, as they believed, to allunlucky infants of either gender, born towards the small hours on a Friday night.

I need say nothing here, on the first head, because nothing can show better than my history whether thatprediction was verified or falsified by the result. On the second branch of the question, I will only remark, that unless I ran through that part of my inheritance while I was still a baby I have not come into it yet.But I do not at all complain of having been kept out of this property; and if anybody else should be in thepresent enjoyment of it, he is heartily welcome to keep it.

I was born with a caul, which was advertised for sale, in the newspapers, at the low price of fifteenguineas. Whether seagoing people were short of money about that time, or were short of faith andpreferred cork-jackets, I dont know; all I know is that there was but one solitary bidding, and that wasfrom an attorney connected with the bill-broking business, who offered two pounds in cash and thebalance in sherry, but declined to be guaranteed from drowning on nay higher bargain. Consequently theadvertisement was withdrawn at a dead lossfor as to sherry, my poor dear mothers own sherry was inthe market thenand ten years afterwards the caul was put up in a raffle down in our part of the country,to fifty members at half-a-crown a head, the winner to spend five shillings. I was present myself, and Iremember to have felt quite uncomfortable and confused, at a part of myself being disposed of in that

way. The caul was won, I recollect, by an old lady with a hand-basket, who, very reluctantly, producedfrom it the stipulated five shillings, all in halfpence, and twopence halfpenny short- as it took an immensetime and a great waste of arithmetic to endeavour without any effect to prove to her. It is a fact which willbe long remembered as remarkable down there, that she was never drowned, but died triumphantly in bed,at ninety-two. I have understood that it was, to the last, her proudest boast, that she never had been on thewater in her life, except upon a bridge; and that over her tea (to which she was extremely partial) she, tothe last, expressed her indignation at the impiety of mariners and others, who had the presumption to gomeandering about the world. It was in vain to represent to her that some conveniences, tea perhapsincluded, resulted from this objectionable practice. She always returned, with greater emphasis and withan instinctive knowledge of the strength of her objection, Let us have no meandering.
