Scientific Capacity Building in Disease Endemic Countries for

Sustainable Control of NTDs

Pauline Mwinzi, PhD

• The five foundations all involved in research capacity building in Africa and linked through European Foundation Centre.

• In 2007 NTDs were starting to get attention from governments and international organisations.

• Funding for treatment programmes but dearth of expertise in African countries for research, policy development and implementation was inadequate

• ARNTD:  African and European – proposed a capacity building programme for young African scientists

ARNTD:   Founded by EFINTD fellows

EFINTD

FELLOWS SUPPORTED UNDER EFINTD 2009‐2014

23 Fellows• 10 senior• 13 junior

12 Sub-Saharan African countries

17 Fellows - Anglophone countries4 Fellows - Francophone countries2 Fellows - Lusophone countries

4 female fellows: 2 East Africa2 Southern Africa

Problems identified by NTD researchers

• Lack of critical mass of researchers in NTD• Lack of mentors for home grown junior scientists

• Efforts at influencing policy is uncoordinated and individualized

• Sub‐optimal use of limited available resources

The State of Research on Infectious diseases of Poverty (IDP) :

…. the need for a structure that facilitates and promotes the growth of research and research capacity in Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) in Africa

The African Research Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases

• Builds on network of EFINTD research fellows• A platform for NTD experts on the African continent

• Empower current and future generation of African researchers to support evidence‐based control and elimination of NTDs

• Build sustainable collaborative network for NTDs between researchers, policy makers and implementers on the African continent
